School of Ag here, but I have professional experience in several other areas. A lot of non-professional experience in a hell of a lot more.

I've lit thousands of fires in my life using accelerants of all varieties. I'm also an Eagle Scout that has had first aid training for most of my life, and I have also seen a friend to the hospital for 2nd and 3rd degree burns before from an accident involving a gasoline and diesel explosion. His skin was coming off.

I don't need a degree to tell me this story us bulls***. I don't personally need a medical professional to set it straight, but here they are anyway, setting it straight, and some posters STILL can't recognize it's a major hole in this story.

Wake the f*** up. Your feelings are clouding whatever critical thinking skills you possess.

Yep - my son has a turf burn on his leg about twice the size of the one on the cheek. They both look similar.

pretty sure i am the first post in this thread stating this is all bull*****

but people are going to see what they want to see.

As demonstrated here, some see "racism" behind every tree corner.

You said "Dude" in response to the pics of burn examples. I said everyone should SEE how FOS the claims are, in response to the pic. I'm not arguing who called B.S. first (but props for maintaining a functioning B.S. meter)

It does appear the police are investigating. Hopefully they took possession of her clothes to test for the presence of accelerants and if present see if the splash pattern is consistent with her story.

If it really happened that's horrible but none of it adds up. Madison is extremely liberal, moreso than Austin. The most likely scenario is Antifa types did it to her for the good of the cause.

Wisconsin is not exactly a hotbed of the KKK.

Have any of you hoax deniers even thought to google "Pictures of 2nd and 3rd degree burns"? I may not have an Aggie undergrad degree but I do have an Aggie MD degree (I was actually told once that the undergrad degree is more important). I think even the dumbest MS-3 would know those are not 2nd or 3rd degree burns. Guys and gals this is what we are up against. The constant barrage of group think, gross stupidity and not one single ounce of critical thinking.

Of course 95% of the posts on this thread are extremely skeptical of the girl's really sketchy story. The group think is entirely on the left. (Who oddly accuse us of group think)

Sadly, in the world in which we now live the facts don't matter. The allegation of racism is all the majority of the dumb masses out there will focus on.

Awful story. 4 men just randomly poured lighter fluid on her than threw a lighter at her. She suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

Sorry but I have to flag this as a rumor, false or unverified report.

So, there must be other people that saw or heard the four drunken "typical Wisconsin Frat boys" that were yelling racist slurs and lighting a woman on fire, right? Or maybe they were being very quiet and laying in wait for a brown person to stop at a light, with the windows down so they could douse with lighter fluid and set ablaze. Then quietly disappear back into the night like Wisconsin frat boy ninjas.

Prior: .33 chance this is real based on historical hate crime reports

Update for political makeup, the county voted 0.70 Democrat in 2016. The location is adjacent to the state capitol and downtown, so probably more liberal than the county average.

The location is also within walking distance of one of the most liberal campuses in the country. The average college student is about 0.66 Democrat vs Republican, probably much higher at UW.

Before getting to the evidence we're looking at a low probability that this is a real hate crime, so we need strong evidence to overturn the assumption dictated by the base rate with Bayesian updating.

When my son was around two, my wife put him on the counter while making breakfast. He reached over and got hold of the coffee pot, and it spilled on his thigh. The skin was sloughing off before I got him to the ER.
Many trips to the doctor and talking to CPS(not fun). Those are not 2nd, or 3rd degree burns. My 2 cents.

My 90-year-old mom still has scars on her arm from 3rd degree burns as a child.

Funny how they didn't disappear in two days.

Evidence for a real crime: literal burns, obviously
Burning yourself sounds pretty hard. I've done it by accident and it's no good, so doing several burns seems like it would take a lot more willpower than most people have. Most hoaxes are really low effort and low damage, so this would be unusual.

Evidence against: Not sure the burn patterns match a spray bottle. Having a hard time thinking of something that would light that easily, be easy to put out, and also do that much localized damage without doing way more damage to the rest of the face and neck. It was 59 degrees at the time of the incident, so most people wouldn't have the window down.

I am not a forensic or medical specialist, my only knowledge is from first aid training and random stuff I happen to know. As such, I have more confidence in my evidence for it being a real crime than against.

Final conclusion: still >50% that it's a hoax, but low confidence and waiting for more information. Wouldn't be surprised if the burns are damage from burning debris that hit her when it was already hot as opposed to liquid lighting on her skin, that seems more consistent with the burn patterns to me, so the hoax would be the explanation rather than the damage.

One thing that makes this story unbelievable is the alleged number of assailants involved . 4 people sounds scarier, but is far, far less likely to have occurred than a random act by a single person. This is why it is almost always a lone gunman in mass shootings.

In my opinion, it looks like she got lighter fluid on a bandana that she was wearing to cover her face, and then it caught fire from her own lighter or a lit Molotov cocktail. That would explain the random splotches of slight burning on her face, but no signs of burned hair or hands. The bandana could have been ripped off without burning her hands.

Excellent point, Stinky. Your second paragraph provides a much more believable story than the victim's. I'd be curious if she's participated in any rioting/protesting previously.

Interesting theory.

Would help explain why there are some really bad spots on her neck.

Imagine the bandana is tied around her neck and the back of her head. Fire starts, she manages to get the top part off, but the lower tie, around the base of her neck, does not come off easily. Might explain why the neck scars are deep, as if someone was trying to yank it off.

Looking at the picture....from the driver's side, wouldn't it be more likely that the left side of her face has burns?
I was wondering if anyone else noticed that. The first pic shows burns on her right side, which would be the passenger side, which doesn't hold with the story. Then, the Twitter pics show what appear to be the same exact burns on each side of her face. What the **** is going on here?

Resembles a friction burn or rub burn more than a chemical or fire burn, which would blister.

Selfies often reverse images. Not sure which side of her face was actually burned.
