the death rate does matter

lower IFR is good, no doubt

but a ton of asymptomatic doesn't address the HC infrastructure collapse issue, in fact it likely exacerbates it

causing the IFR to increase

would you agree?

And this surprises no one whatsoever.

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

the final numbers were closer to 20% asymptomatic on the ship

Two different studies. Two different measures. https://www.forbes.com/sites/victoriaforster/2020/03/22/what-have-scientists-learned-from-using-cruise-ship-data-to-learn-about-covid-19/#1703c399406d

There are very few truly asymptomatic patients and most of that group consists of children.

Most "asymptomatic" cases are instances where the patient was tested before symptoms developed or were pauci-symptomatic.

I believe the first part but not necessarily the 2nd part.

I believe the asymptomatic numbers are much much much higher than people think. I also believe it is fair to assume that the virus has been in the US a lot longer than we believe. Virus dates back to mid-November and we didn't get a case in the US until January 20th. Over two months during some of the busiest travel seasons of the year. It doesn't add up.
the cruise ship is still the best handle on asymptomatic cases. 50 % of positive test were from people with no symptoms.

Most of whom later developed at least mild symptoms

So 30 days out? Like the cruise ship study. Very mild. Like many people that are currently not going to be tested...?

If only we could affix something bold and eye catching to someone's clothing that would signify potential infection... I don't know maybe a red letter...

The vast majority of people in India speak English.

I thought the same thing but know that India has something like 40 official languages so English is not that crazy. There is an Indian place name on that stamp.

It is my understanding that people either speak english or resort to hand signals because the country has so many different languages and dialects.

My office in the past had several indians that couldn't speak anything but english to each other for that very reason.

Edit.

I was wrong on the 40 but does it matter when this is the reality?

I've never been to India and don't know much about it specifically, but I have been to Egypt and Russia in the last couple years and the amount of English I saw was astounding, and very surprising. Almost everything was basically bilingual to the same extent English and Spanish is in south Texas.

Try China.

Finding an english speaker is much harder. Then throw in the fact that Chinese people speak Mandarin, Shanganese, Cantonese, etc and normally only understand their own dialect it can get frustrating quick.

Or go to Scandinavia and have the locals correct your english, also frustrating.

I believe it. I spent a good portion of my childhood growing up in Laredo and I heard more Spanish than English, and learned it pretty well, then later I took two years of Spanish in high school. Yet when I went to Spain a long time ago (1985) we were told there were (I think, from memory) 6 major dialects and far more minor ones. And as comfortable as I had expected to be communicating there I had real trouble in some places. I'm sure China and India are like that x100.

Semi-Fake News

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/pdfs/mm6912e3-H.pdf

Quote:

SARS-CoV-2 RNA was identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had been conducted (Takuya Yamagishi, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, personal communication, 2020). Although these data cannot be used to determine whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces, further study of fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 aboard cruise ships is warranted.

RNA =/= infectious virus

Semi fake because RNA is usually very fragile and easily degraded. It is probable that the virus was stable and potentially infectious for longer than expected, but the report does not say that a transmissible virus was present on surfaces 17 days after everyone left.
