Crazy story from New Orleans. Severe lung damage in folks in their 40s, ventilators on highest settings and they still gasp for air. Pink frothy secretions in breathing tubes. Running out of PPE.

Why? The virus isn't transmitted by blood

No, they told me that no human coronavirus is transmissible by blood donation including SARS and MERS which are very genetically similar. They're doing the usual screening - temperature, BP, questionnaire including recent travel.

Go donate if you can, they need it bad.

Interesting info here

https://www.covidgraph.com/p/coronavirus.html#comorbidities

  • The median age of the deceased is 80.
  • 99% of the deceased were over 50.
  • Zero Italians under 30 have died, despite overwhelmed hospitals.
  • 89.8% already had one or more serious health conditions (cancer, chronic heart disease, chronic liver disease, etc)
  • About half already had three or more serious health conditions
  • 73.8% of deceased patients in Italy had hypertension

I mean I'd much prefer the person drawing my blood hasn't been in close contact with a carrier but maybe that's just me.

A comment by the doctors who published either the paper that was referencing or one very similar. (link here)

Quote:

Italy has had 12 462 confirmed cases according to the Istituto Superiore di Sanita as of March 11, and 827 deaths. Only China has recorded more deaths due to this COVID-19 outbreak. The mean age of those who died in Italy was 81 years and more than two-thirds of these patients had diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or cancer, or were former smokers. It is therefore true that these patients had underlying health conditions, but it is also worth noting that they had acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia, needed respiratory support, and would not have died otherwise. Of the patients who died, 42.2% were aged 8089 years, 32.4% were aged 7079 years, 8.4% were aged 6069 years, and 2.8% were aged 5059 years (those aged >90 years made up 14.1%). The male to female ratio is 80% to 20% with an older median age for women (83.4 years for women vs 79.9 years for men).
Just because comorbidities exist doesn't mean those people were going to die. A person who has high blood pressure may be able to live for decades longer. The point they're making is that yeah, that person is unhealthy and is more at risk for this disease...but high blood pressure doesn't cause ARDS and death in a week or two.

A reasonable concern, however I think I can help assuage it.

No we are not testing everyone they works or enters the blood center. With limited tests available for those that truly need it, we wouldn't want to be an additional burden on the supply.

However, blood centers are taking additional measures to ensure donor and staff safety. Strict rules and policies are in place to allow staff to be able to not come to work if feeling even slightly ill. Also, donors are healthy people, and staff follow strict SOPs in regards to PPE and how to interact with donors already. Much of this limits their chance of exposure. We have also instituted additional sterilizations of common areas to help mitigate any other risks.

Lastly, the blood is needed. It will he needed again next week and for the near future.

Nationally, Over 350,000 projected donations have been lost in just the first 2 weeks. These were blood drives that had been planned for months and now the centers are left scrambling.

If you are eligible and healthy. Go donate. And then donate again when eligible. This isn't ending anytime soon.

Any likelihood of letting people donate more often? 16 weeks is a dang long time between power reds. Can't I pound red meat and be back in the game sooner?

Ha. I wish it were that simple. I sincerely doubt it. Donation frequency is established by FDA guidance and strictly enforced, on some donors down to the red cell loss. (Yes we track the numbers of red cells a donor gives in a 12 month period and if too much, they are deferred for a week to allow the clock to reset!)

Thank you for giving.

I don't think you'll find anyone arguing they were going to die anyway because of the comorbidities.

It's having them statically would mean your chance of surviving a tough battle with coronavirus to be lower. It's like saying you have diabetes and then get another comorbidity like high blood pressure, your chances of fighting any illness decrease.

The data isn't saying young people don't get extremely sick/die. It's just saying older and people with comorbidities account for a large majority.

And that dynamic probably increases as treatment gets better I would imagine. Younger/healthier will probably respond better to that too.

Mardi Gras and burbon street in general is always a **** show elbow to elbow. If you want the flu etc, then Mardi Gras is a pretty good bet to find it with that many people.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Okay, I'm late to the party but here for it.

Abbott is talking numbers. less than 10% of people being tested are testing possible.
We are working on maximizing capacity for beds, supplies, personal protection supplies.

Has waived things that keep nurses from working.. so retired nurses can reactivate, graduating nurses have their permits waived, fast tracking permits for out of state medical workers.

Issuing 2 executive orders to expand beds. All licensed healthcare professionals and facilities are to postpone all elective surgeries. suspending certain regulations to increase number of beds (for example, can treat more than one patient per room)

Announcing a strikeforce concentrating on global supplies and procuring them for Texas. We don't have enough testing or personal protection equipment... it is not a money problem, but a production problem. So we are calling on the government to help supply us with what we need to address these issues.

Naming Keith Meyers, procurement for Dell Technologies, now working on procurement (w/ unpaid leave) to work on procurement for supplies.

Also asking clint harp, and a guy from state congress, missed that guys name. Someone from Colorado river authority? think I missed that too. Anywho, bunch of peeps working on making sure that our hospitals have bed, trying to get PPE, and even food for hospital workers.

Elaine Mendoza (of course, a woman) for trying to help with daycare for these workers and organizing that. lol get the chick to deal with the kid problems.

Penalties for not complying with the executive orders regarding quarantine will include fines, jail time, and mandatory quarantine.

LOL this is not a shelter in place, stop asking he just announced a different quarantine measure thing, lets wait til that works out and see how it goes. There are counties with no cases and even show Dallas is turning into a sh-show, that doesn't mean small counties need to shelter in place...however, local officials have the full authority to implement stricter standards..so go team federalism. I'm not making every area shelter in place cause right now that doesn't make sense. I am flexible.

The most important thing we can all do, is to know and understand the current exectuive orders in place. No groups over 10, bars/gyms/etc closed, do use your local takeout and support local businesses when you can.

Follow the executive orders to increase hospital bed space. 1st and 2nd tier strategies.. Dr. Zerwass (Sp?) and keith meyer are going to be working on that this week.

Has activated national guard to help local hospitals and authorities in this time. For purposes such as:
Helping with drive though testing facilities.
Helping build medical tents.
Reinstating recently vacated hospital facilities

Now Dr. Hellerstadt (sp?) will speak.

Dr Hellerstadt (sp?) is wearing a jacket that is too small.

He wants to remind us about preventative measures. Already working hard to do more prevention.
He is emphasising that we are in the EARLY stages of community spread. This time in critical to try to do as much as we can to prevent spread. He is encouraged by Texans taking this seriously. These measures will greatly reduce the community spread. Thank you. We can defeat this.

Cheif... I didn't catch his name.

He's making sure we remember that this is not the first time this has happened in Texas. Thanks the first responders, reminds us that our response is in our control.

Questions: When is the peak

Dr guy says... we don't know.. that's up to how well we social distance and whatnot. We know how bad it can get if we don't take the proper measures and keep it slow. The more successful we are, the longer it will take to peak.

Q: Will schools resume this year
Abbott: stricter standards going into effect, will take weeks, no way to know now, commissoner of education is working to have multiple strategies in place right now. We are working with parents and students to try to do online learning, delivering packets to homes, etc.

Q: why/when would we implement stricter standards
Abbott: Uhh if yall comply and do what you are supposed to now, we won't need to find out (paraphrased)

Abbott: I'm governor of all 254 counties and I can't make decisions just for Dallas.

The hospital ceo's first preference was medical tents that can be used for Covid patients. 2nd was abandoned hospitals? how many of those are hanging around texas? Last was hotel rooms being converted.

I really like Abbott's jacket. No clue if he is wearing pants.

Getting PPE is probably the biggest priority here. If our healthcare workers can't be protected, than we can't contain spread. We need delivery dates tomorrow, not in July. If you have PPE, we have money and will cut you a check on the spot.

swimmerbabe11
How long do you want to ignore this user?
wow. The very last thing he said in that press conference was "if you have PPE and can deliver. we will cut you a check on the spot" and then rolled the eff away.
