Why should the US test people with no symptoms?

People have lost their mind over testing, almost like it's some panacea.
It's not.

The last thing we need to do is burden the healthcare system with hypochondriacs and twitter followers who think we are all going to die.

Maybe they weren't tested because it doesn't start until tomorrow?

So nearly 2/3 of global deaths are within Italy.

I have seen that 2/3 of Italy's population is elderly. It hit one of our nursing homes and took a lot out there too.

It's a mild virus to most but if you are older with health conditions you need to take extra precautions.

Question about the age of Italy's population:

How is it even possible that they are that lopsided in age?
Are kids graduating high school and then leaving the country in droves? Honest question

There really is no excuse for the slow state of testing in America since we see other countries are doing it a lot better. It can be done. It's embarrassing that the CDC is so behind.

For the first time, I am relieved my Mom has passed. Were she still alive, she would be freaking the hell out, between the stock market and the virus, she would have been in full meltdown, with or without her dementia.

I would also likely be hearing a million, "I told you so's" about the dangers of China and a second Great Depression looming.

<sign>
That would have been my grandmother if she was still alive.

I wish both my parents would show even a little concern for it. Not the hysteria I find so appalling, but enough concern to be prepared should there be any disruptions or even mandatory quarantines.
My parents are in their 80s and live in an assisted living facility.

They were born during the great Depression. Polio was still a thing when they were kids. They've lived through any number of threats, real or imagined, and they are still here.

They just see this as another thing we'll all get through somehow, because that's always how it's been so far.

Maybe older folks are just tougher than we are.

The company required that any CV issues must be raised, but she will not do it again. The bad part is we only got a doctor involved because she has epilepsy and getting sick can set off seizures. The test wasn't requested because of symptoms, it was ordered because she went to the rodeo.

"How reliable are the tests?" seems like a good question.

If I thought I might be sick with CV and didn't get tested, I would take precautions to avoid getting others sick. If I got tested and got a false negative, I'd take less precautions. If I got tested and had a false positive, I'd be more inclined to take up valuable healthcare resources which I wouldn't otherwise.

The amount of advice not coming from Federal, State, and local officials is staggering. Every hospital, business, school district, family is being left to make decisions on their own.

I'm a small government guy, but even I think one of the jobs of government is to manage a pandemic. What a complete, systemic breakdown. This isn't a criticism of the president or a party. It's a criticism of our government's failure, at every level, to fulfill one its basic responsibilities.

False. Took me 10 seconds to google. Please at least put a tiny bit of effort in before repeating things you don't know are true. 22% are 65+

If it can actually survive and remain viable that long on surfaces, it's a little terrifying.

Weren't we previously told maybe 9 hrs on surfaces?

if that's true, and they have 0 deaths and the hospitals aren't overwhelmed yet, then that's pretty freaking good news with regard to disease severity

it would give credence to the iceberg estimations being enormous

still warrants a mandated shutdown, but i'm wondering if that's why things seem so critical right now... that the epidemic is fully on and if we get through two months then there will be an incremental rise in herd immunity that would make subsequent outbreaks not as severe

anyways, just spitballing

To whomever thinks this is overreaction.... its an evolutionary fact that being cautious is critical for survival. It only takes 1 instance of thinking no big deal... to end you. I would rather survive than to underestimate severity.

Lamar Consolidated ISD (Sugar Land) just sent out email that they are cancelling classes for next week (this week is spring break. Also in Sugar Land, Fort Bend ISD, just sent out email that they are cancelling class for the next two weeks, and finalizing online learning and training staff in online classes, should it need to extend beyond that.

Fort Bend Co had those six cases last week that were presumptive (Egypt tour). Still haven't heard about CDC confirmation. They will probably run the tests on those six sometime this summer.

If you're not testing for the virus you are not going to have any deaths from the virus.

I know that's simplistic but that's why they don't have any deaths in Ohio from their 100,000 cases.
