Congressional doctor predicts 70-150 million U.S. coronavirus cases

Quote:

Congress' in-house doctor told Capitol Hill staffers at a close-door meeting this week that he expects 70-150 million people in the U.S. roughly a third of the country to contract the coronavirus, two sources briefed on the meeting tell Axios.

Dr. Brian Monahan, the attending physician of the U.S. Congress, told Senate chiefs of staff, staff directors, administrative managers and chief clerks from both parties on Tuesday that they should prepare for the worst, and offered advice on how to remain healthy.

But other estimates, including statistical modeling from Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch, have said that somewhere between 20% and 60% of adults worldwide might catch the virus.

Fake news?
It is his opinion, just like all the other predictions out there.

It's also possible they asked him for a "worst case scenario" and that is the figure he provided.

Axios stories, given their propensity for fake news (very common during the Russia Collusion Delusion), should always be taken with a dose of salt.

Getting whiplash from all the back and forth on this. Fomids, aerosols, droplets, fecal-oral, wish they'd make up their minds.

Or wish they'd just come out and say we have nfc, just don't be nasty and practice social distancing.

The truth is its probably all of the above. Influenza is aerosolized early on and more droplet later apparently. That study from Germany suggested this is probably similar - aerosol in early stage, droplets later. Poopoo the whole time.

So about one in every 20-100 people a sick person comes in close contact will catch this.

If 20-30 people could get infected from one person at a basketball game, we are effed each year this virus pops up from her on out. We will basically all get this thing if it is even half THAT easily spread.
There's a freaking article showing a single dude got like 8 people sick on a bus in Hunan. That's some bullcrap right there.

Plus you know that it won't be the super conscientious person that goes to the game, carefully coughs into their sleeve or a tissue. It'll be some brochad superfan hacking everywhere because "HE CANT MISS THIS ITS OUR YEAR BRO" and high fiving everyone as he's in line to take a leak.

Yes. I'm a 32 y/o nonsmoker with zero underlying health conditions. I've had hangovers last longer than this would lay me up.
OK, i'm with you now. I think I might prefer to just get it and get it over with.
You two just refuse to comprehend - it's not about the young people. It's about the older folks + other at-risk people to whom you might pass it (directly or indirectly) that will end up being hospitalized. If you want to get it and can assure everyone that you won't come in contact with ANYBODY once you've contracted the virus, then have at it. Otherwise, just stop with the willful ignorance

We were presented with a question and gave an answer. The question didn't stipulate "if you're XX years old" or "underlying health issues"

No, and the president of the Tokyo Olympic Committee said the member who claimed the games would probably be postponed for 1-2 years is basically full of crap.

They're keeping an eye on it right now, but since the games don't start until July 24th, they're keeping all options open right now. Nothing has been decided.

But where does it stop? What is considered a large public gathering? Anything over 500 people? 1,000 people?
Thus far, 92 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 have been linked to a 2-day company conference of a couple hundred Biogen execs in Boston in early March.

How many of those who attended were already infected and either asymptomatic or not feeling symptoms yet, we don't know.

Hate to break it to you but the government's primary concern is not saving lives but panic management. Governments like to exist. Panic is a greater threat to their existence than people dying. Keeping a lid on panic is priority one for the CDC, WHO, chicoms, and others. Whether you get deathly ill or not is not so much their concern so long as they can keep you relatively calm

I agree about Axios, but I also think Dr. Monahan is overstating the number of infections by a multiple of 3 or more. He is not factoring in the number of NPIs that will deployed as the outbreaks occur.

Not necessarily. Herd immunity of the overall population would gradually lower the defacto R0.

Fair enough. Then my semi-ragey response should have been directed at Tysker, who framed the question in a way that perpetuates the whole "I'll be fine anyway, so don't screw up my economy" mindset. Apologies if I took it out on you.

Does one person on a plane infect the whole plane? That's much more "shared air".
Actually that's probably not true. Airplanes use HEPA filters and frequent air changes. Much more likely to get infected in the airport.
Exactly. Airplanes have not been good vectors for transmission in a long time due to the heavy filtration used on the recirculated air. As an example, the Boeing 787 has 15 HEPA filters installed in its air system. This is in addition to using less recirculated air than other models of aircraft due to the bleedless air intake system.

The people most at risk of contracting something on a plane are the flight attendants, or those sitting next to a sick person.
This. Modern airliner air filtration completely replaces cabin air about once every four minutes. There may be possible spread to passengers in the immediate vicinity of an infected person, but it won't likely go beyond that unless that person hacks on folks while walking up and down the aisle, deposits it in multiple lavs, etc.

I'd say pretty low. Let the states call emergencies as needed at this time. A Federal declaration would unnecessarily destroy the markets IMHO.
