Trump last week (at presser):

"We only have 15 cases and soon we'll have less."

Trump this week:

Looking forward to the update next week. :/

I said this a while back when Azar was talking about only few cases, 1 death, low risk. Not good messaging and it makes people scoreboard watch. The better approach is what Dr. Gottlieb said - assume there are thousands of cases in the US. If it never gets there (it will) then at least you slowed down the spread. Quoting low numbers that keeps growing causes unrealistic expectations.

Guess China is confirming that it attacks the central nervous system now.

Quote:

Beijing Ditan Hospital affiliated to the Capital Medical University said on March 4 that the first patient with novel coronavirus pneumonia complicated with encephalitis was discharged from the hospital on February 25.

Liu Jingyuan, director of the ICU at the Hospital, presided over the treatment of the patient. He reminded that patients with conscious disturbances must consider the possibility that the virus may attack the central nervous system.

At present, patients with new type of coronavirus pneumonia can be combined with multiple organ damages such as severe respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), myocardial damage, abnormal coagulation function, kidney damage, liver damage, etc. However, no central nervous system involvement has been reported. The case report is the first in the world.

I wonder if this is the cause of some of the strange things we have seen with the virus like the reinfection a being worse and the collapses.
I don't see anything in that confirming that it attacks the brain.

Sorry I may have missed this, but all I keep seeing are the overall infection numbers increase as testing increases (seems inevitable), and then the death #s which are concentrated in the elderly/already sick. What are the actual symptoms and negative effects for someone who is relatively young and healthy? Basically the same as a bad case of the flu?

Dry cough, fever, fatigue are primary symptoms.
Secondary are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting.
Many cases seem to result in viral pneumonia.

If people are hospitalized, stay seems something like 10 days. Fever seems to last several (5+) days. But it's new so all this is mostly based off of studies in China.

Trumps handling has been extremely disappointing and I'm not sure he is fully understanding what can happen here. I've read even yesterday they aren't even screening people coming in from Italy... how is that possible. All flights from Asia should have been shut down immediately.
Eh. People always gripe about the President in a crisis, especially if he's got an R after his name.
Eh, when the death toll starts mounting these won't be gripes.
The Democrats were up in arms about limiting travel to China back when Trump announced the travel restrictions. No matter what Trump does the will complain. If Trump does nothing it will be bad and people complain. If Trump shuts down travel and other things he's called xenophobic and that he's overreacting. It's a no win situation compounded by the CDC botching the test kit production last month.

This is odd, but does it seem like People from European stock are immune from this disease or at least in some way less vulnerable? I was watching the news and it showed the people in New York with the virus were asiatic, and the same with the people they were showing in Italy. Does this sound possible to anyone? geographically, there is no where to run to except north or south, so that adds to the congestion and spread of the disease IMO.

I don't think it has an ethnic component. I think it originated in China and was spread by the Chinese. The first people infected are going to be the people who are likely Chinese who brought it back from China. Their close associates are likely to be the same ethnicity. So it will spread through that population at the beginning. The next thing you look at are the patients age, and underlying health problems. This is primarily a respiratory illness of the lungs from what I have read. Smokers and those with lung aillments or who live with high levels of pollution (China) are probably going to have a more serious illness, but any underlying health problem puts you at risk.

I never said Biden is a better option.

IMO if this keeps going the way it is, by the time both conventions roll around BOTH parties will be reconsidering their choices.

After all, they are political parties, they tend to change with the political winds. This is shaping up to be a once in 100 years storm.....

To me, It's pretty simple if Trump is able to handle this dilemma well. He'll get another four years (deservingly). If he fails, he'll either be replaced at the convention or lose the Dems replacement candidate. It won't be Biden, Sanders or Clinton.

Feel feee to start an *****official CV political discussion thread *****. I've been discussing it here because IMO it's going to be a large part of this story as we head further into 2020.
I didnt say you said anything about Biden...but he is going to be the Dem nominee. And you must already be suffering from a severe fever if you think Trump wont be the nominee....also if you think he wont beat any of the chumps being run against him. Especially if this does blow up big, because liberal stronghold in large cities will be hit the hardest anyways!

I'm not sure how you thought a pandemic was ever not going to happen. The notion that this won't continue to spread worldwide or that the US could completely isolate itself from this thing was fanciful at best.

" I don't think it has an ethnic component."

I think anyone can get it, but I think risk factors and ACE2 (smokers, certain genetic makeups may have more alleles than others) expression eventually will be seen as correlations.

The experiment continues every day ... eventually data will out.

He says he was notified that what made him ill was CV about four weeks after he recovered. I don't know if that's verifiable, but it makes tot sense that when they discover the novel virus they would go back and test samples of people who fit the symptom profile to try to track its origination and growth.
