That's not what I meant when I brought up mutation. The mutation, as I understood it, was enough to make the virus unidentifiable by your adaptive immune system to efficiently create the antibodies (edit: originally said antigens... sorry) to fight the virus... ie, it has to go through the process from scratch to begin producing proper antibodies (edit: originally wrote antigens). If I was incorrect on that, I apologize. That said, I'm glad I voiced my understanding and was subsequently corrected... otherwise I would still have the misunderstanding. It's not a matter of trying to frustrate the folks who are experts.

** WARNING - From our neighborhood FB page (so take with a big grain of salt)...Read that the man infected out here is part of the 36 person tour group recently back from Egypt. 10 of the group are from Houston area: 6 in Sugar Land, 2 in Woodlands, 2 in Memorial area. Others from group returned to New York, California, Taiwan and Canada. Others in Houston 10 group have tests pending. ** END WARNING

Have there been many cases in Egypt though?
They dont have the ability to test, so how would anyone know?

No I get it. Actually it's the headlines about that which I'd worry create layperson association with Hollywood.

That paper said nothing about immune response. Antigens are typically, I believe, based on protein structure (amino acid residues). The analysis from that group found residue changes, but not in the places that are believed to be associated with receptor binding or viral replication. With most of the protein structure conserved, I would expect that immune response would be comparable.

I said at the very beginning that if this thing happened anywhere but China, containment and control would be a much larger issue.

Right. If you look here you can see all the mutations to the genome.

https://nextstrain.org/ncov

But those mutations don't necessarily produce a change to an amino acid or gene. The only ones that would be relevant to immunological response would be things that result in a change to the spike protein, right?

Does that mean that its not strictly true that any modification in the antigen would necessarily mean your immune response goes back to square one? If that's true, does that also mean that changes in antigen related to receptor binding and viral replication are the key areas that determine the efficiency of immune response memory?

Or... is it just more complicated that this and its too much to go into on a forum? I understand this really doesn't add to news and facts of the thread... I'm just really interested. I'm finding this very fascinating and sometimes little kicks like this can help understanding for me.

Yes, we know. Don't trust the WHO, but trust some off shot conspiracy theorists website that is convinced we didn't land on the moon either.

Some of y'all are absolutely insufferable and will believe nothing that can be taken as progress or good news.

Don't know that it would need to be the spike protein necessarily. It just needs to be some externally exposed surface that an antibody can bind to. I don't know the physical structure of the virus well enough to comment on what. But the divergence paper did not allude to differences with in the locations expected to relate to transmission or replication. Specifically said there were none actually.

And don't freak out when the US cases go from hundreds to a thousand over the course of a weekend. It's not because it's suddenly exploding. It'll be because we are finally able to test for this thing more widely.
As has been mentioned on this thread, humans arent great at understanding or appreciating exponential growth. Just like some acted irrationally during the infection growth stage, some will act irrationally during the reported infection growth stage. We, humans, naturally understand acceleration but it its hard for us to appreciate the significance when there is a change in acceleration.

Was out at the rodeo yesterday. Talked to a couple HPD police officers. They have trained on PPE measures and have a plan should someone at the rodeo be infected. Not sure what they can/will do about livestock. Concerns are about 50-70K people gathering every single night - different than a sporting event because lots of folks on the grounds - arena, carnival, and stadium. Concerns are about the large number of FFA high school students gathering from all over the state. Concerns about international guests. No signs of show discontinuing - business as usual but - may not be up to rodeo - crossing fingers that a performer does not cancel or if one does, the dominoes start falling.

Definitely not strictly true. It depends on what the antibody is targeting.

Antibodies typically recognize a peptide sequence (part of a protein). So if the peptide sequence that it binds is common to both strains, its not going to discriminate. Many times, the peptide sequence can even change a little and still be bound by the antibody. I think it would completely depend on what antibodies being produced are targeted against.

The receptor-binding domain is clearly externally presented. Most of the papers I've read have focused on about 6 residues (amino acids) that are important for binding ACE2. I don't know that those would be what the antibody would get raised against, but they didn't appear to be different between the strains.

https://www.zerohedge.com/health/beijing-hospital-confirms-covid-19-attacks-central-nervous-system

Guess China is confirming that it attacks the central nervous system now.

Quote:

Beijing Ditan Hospital affiliated to the Capital Medical University said on March 4 that the first patient with novel coronavirus pneumonia complicated with encephalitis was discharged from the hospital on February 25.

Liu Jingyuan, director of the ICU at the Hospital, presided over the treatment of the patient. He reminded that patients with conscious disturbances must consider the possibility that the virus may attack the central nervous system.

At present, patients with new type of coronavirus pneumonia can be combined with multiple organ damages such as severe respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), myocardial damage, abnormal coagulation function, kidney damage, liver damage, etc. However, no central nervous system involvement has been reported. The case report is the first in the world.

I wonder if this is the cause of some of the strange things we have seen with the virus like the reinfection a being worse and the collapses.

I think that's usually what they are doing when they develop vaccines...trying to get a target for the body to react to. That said, developing vaccines is not something I have any experience with.

Probably no human on earth has had any exposure to any portion of this coronavirus that enabled their immune system to produce antibodies against it. Thus, we are at its mercy and hope it doesn't spread like the H1N1 virus did. It may have at least a 15% kill rate in those over 65 with any respiratory problems and a 1% to 3% for all other adults over 30. Hopefully, it will not spread rapidly.

We have very few test kits in the US so we do not have much accurate information on this problem here. No matter, please do not pay any attention to what our POTUS says. Especially, if you have significant flu-like symptoms, please do NOT go to work like the POTUS suggested.

Listen only to the medical experts. PLEASE!

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I don't see anything in that confirming that it attacks the brain. 1 patient suffered from encephalitis which can be caused by any number of things that are likely to flair up when the immune system is already compromised.

The Chinese hospital director comment doesn't appear to be a direct quote and if taken as written, then it sounds like those that already have some sort of brain disorder may have further issues if they have the virus.
