How many of you mocking the rest of us for taking precautions against the Coronavirus never even get a flu shot?

There's still a huge range of possibilities between global Ebola and the common cold.
The scenarios we have historically to look at for comparably contagious viruses are influenza, SARS, and MERS outbreaks.
Given the corona virus family is responsible for some highly transmissible common cold strains on a regular basis, this virus could very easily keep escaping containment and spreading. It appears to be very transmissible. We still don't know how dangerous it really is, but the bodies and large numbers of hospitalizations in China is clearly worthy of concern.
The risk that you are insinuating is quite concerning based on those two polar opposites.
I will build a proper risk model, here, shortly.
Lets start with a sliding scale and I will let you initiate where you think we are...
Where are we now?

I haven't gotten a flu shot since I was 4 or 5. Not going to get one either.Bobcat06 said:

It worries me that China is starting to move away from their official "everything is fine" position.

I did. The Zerohedge article I posted was published on February 4. I checked all the February 4 posts on this thread before I posted & it wasn't there. The earlier post mentioning Dr. Boyle was on February 3 & referenced googling Zerohedge. That would be this article from February 3:third coast.. said:

At the time the treatment in reference started weren't the severity of the illness and method and likelihood of transmission basically unknowns? Seems like abundant caution would be warranted.Civil.Savage said:
By itself, it does not.
That would just be a bizaro over abundance of caution. One might wonder if the numbers dont look that bad why such abundance of caution would be taken. Unless of course facilities treating patients known to carry the virus are receiving supplemental
non-public information.
Dude should be estatic. Didn't the NYT just write something about how long it is taking to see a doctor or get an ambulance? Yep seems very odd.nortex97 said:
Umm, when Chinese communist government comes for you, just get in the van as ordered. "Trust us" they said, "we are doing this in your best interests."
That story is false. I saw a movie where grasshoppers smartly have fun and allow ants to do all the work. Then, they swoop in and steal all the food. The ants never once told the grasshoppers to dance.Civil.Savage said:Bobcat06 said:

fify,
edit* I'm not sure you are paying attention, but I am very much on the hope for the best, prepare for the worst side of the fence here.... I don't tell people not to get the flu shot, I just don't personally have a need for it.
It won't hit as many males here because too many don't feel they have a Y chromosome.Zemira said:
Is that because men outnumber women that much in China or is there something in the virus makeup that makes it more lethal to people with a Y chromosome?
Or the men have more underlying health issues so they have a weakened/compromised immune system?
I believe that the theory on why men are twice as likely to die from this has to do with particular receptors on cells in the lungs.Zemira said:

Dominic Raab has urged all British nationals in China to leave the country if they can following the outbreak of the coronavirus, which has spread to two dozen countries.
The foreign secretary said in statement: "The safety and security of British people will always be our top priority. As such, we now advise British nationals in China to leave the country if they can, to minimise their risk of exposure to the virus.
A lot more men in China smoke than women. Seeing how this virus effects the respiratory system, that might be one factor.Zemira said:

I never said I had a worldly immune system or anything like that. I just don't see a reason to inject myself with a vaccine when their hit rate on the strains has a tendency to be pretty abysmal.Rustys-Beef-o-Reeno said:IrishTxAggie said:I haven't gotten a flu shot since I was 4 or 5. Use to be the same way, I don't think I got a flu shot from 18-27. Then caught the flu and was down for almost 2 weeks. Now I get it just Incase I catch that particular strain it isn't as bad, it's a 2 day cold and I move on. But saying, I don't get it because you think you have this other worldly immune system is foolish.
You may have less risk factors than the average person which puts you at less risk of catching it, but when you do it's going to put you on your ass.
