Considering China was also the origin for the Black Plague and the Spanish Flu, I'd say they likely aren't going to change. It's a perfect combination of scenarios the lead to a virus soup.

Italian port authorities are not allowing a cruise ship to dock in Italy. There are two sick passengers from HK. 6000 are stuck with them on the floating viral incubator while they wait for test results.

The market is certainly watching but I'd bet there's more downside protection being purchased for a Sanders/Warren election win in November. We wont see effects on earnings until May

Russia has closed their Far East border with China in an attempt to limit spread of the virus. Putin is a lot more concerned about this than we are.

Maybe because he shares a border. Has he stopped all flights/travel from China?

When it comes to cuisine... Americans eat some pretty nasty stuff.

Tilapia is pretty bad and if you've seen Mike Rowe's "Dirty Jobs" on it... you'd never eat it again. They farm it near sewage treatment facilities where they eat the solids from the sewage - Poop.

And yet, Americans gobble that stuff up like it is a delicacy.

Crawfish, catfish, lobsters are the rats of the water.

People eat squirrels... and back in the 90s, Louisiana was trying to trick people into eating Nutria, like we eat crawfish.

Hindus are shocked we eat beef.

Most importantly, if you've ever raised chickens... you might find eating chicken a little more disgusting.

What China needs is less communism and more freedom and capitalism. The problem they have is trying to decentralize their huge cities.

If Trump really cared about Americans, he'd shut our border with China... or Mexico... You know... to be more like his friend Putin.

(Combating new pneumonia) Li Lanjuan: Virus spreads among mammals, pets need to be monitored for outbreaks

Langzhong News Agency, Beijing, January 30th. Li Lanjuan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a member of the high-level expert group of the National Health and Medical Commission, said that the new coronavirus is transmitted between mammals, so mammals need to be prepared. "Owners need to strengthen the management of pets. If pets are exposed to outbreaks and patients, they also need to be monitored."

Yeah but we don't eat them live or boil them alive outside of crustaceans. The Chinese do this because "the torture makes them taste better."

The videos of this are horrific and the level of inhuman and ethnic psychopathy is off the charts.

I don't care what we eat, we don't do this.

Don't believe their numbers anymore, they are apparently taking bodies directly to the crematoriums so they won't be reported.

I doubt it because rail and airports can more easily monitor travelers. The Far East would have a lot more travelers.

I saw these numbers on another site, not sure of the accuracies. Also I assume the assumption is nothing changes and just all the awareness has been a huge change. But this does show how quick and scary it could be.

"The trend continues, with a daily rise of 25% on all metrics.

If we extrapolate from this and if the trend of a 1.25 factor per day is maintained, we are looking at
-40.000 confirmed cases in 1 week,
-200.000 in 2 weeks,
-1 million in 3 weeks
-7 millions a month from now
-4 billions (ie 50% of the worldwide population) 2 months from now

Time for containment measures? Only containment measures will slow down the spread IMO, reducing from a factor of 1.25 to a manageable level."

Slowing down the virus saves lives.

50% of the population getting this virus over a 6 month period vs a 1 month period puts an entirely different strain on Hospitals, allows us to learn more to develop good treatment procedures, and puts lets strain on critical services.

It's in the very first post of that thread. Fifth or sixth link.

If that video is right, the number's probably a quarter million or more at this point infected.

There's a total of about 150K ventilator beds available in the entire U.S.

If the infected count here gets over that, the mortality rate is going to skyrocket.

If the infected count gets to 150k, it's not a problem as far as bed counts are concerned. This thing isn't sending every infected person to the hospital requiring an ICU room.

Until there's some semblance of rapid person to person transmission in western areas, predictions of a worldwide pandemic with billions infected look a bit ridiculous. You're talking about the collapse of the healthcare system, massive damage to global economy, unraveling of society in many places, Millions dead. Way too premature.

That happens then unless you've been storing food for years with a secure location away from population, no amount of perpetration now will make a dent.

If it is on the Internet it must be true.
Let's look at some figures for just China.....7,804 cases
170 deaths
1,370 serious
124 recovered
12,167 suspected

Doesn't look that bad, except it doesn't indicate the exponential growth of cases. Also deaths will lag 7 to 14 days behind number of cases. Check on these statistics on Saturday.

It's not WHAT they eat, it is how they raise and process and clean and prepare it.

(Well, what and how is a problem: uncooked and a huge variety of species from many sources)

There are virtually zero standards, no sanitation, no hygiene practices, virtually no refrigeration, no inspections, animals of different types are stored live in close proximity to each other and food prep areas, there is no verification of sourcing, no sampling or testing for disease, parasites, or contaminants.

China is stuck in the Middle Ages regarding sanitation and hygiene.
Agnzona

The death rate is not near as high as SARS, but the transmission seems to be greatly higher. So, So far not as deadly but significantly more contagious.

The real problem could be spreading to Laos, Cambodia or India. Highly dense populations with poor hygiene and medical care.

We don't really know the mortality rate yet, as it is triggers pneumonia or acute respiratory conditions which may take many days to become fatal.

Really, to be fair, the figures coming from China are probably all lies. The news organizations that are making these comparisons to SARS have no valid way to do so. The infection rate and the death rate of this disease are probably much, much higher than China is reporting.

FWIW, I don't eat tilapia. At least, not tilapia I didn't get myself from invasive populations. You can net, snag, arrow, or gig them in many reservoirs and creeks in SE Texas.
