With today's release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, after 11 years the DCEU has officially come to an end.

Which now means an 18-month break - taking off all of 2024 - until the first live-action entry in the new, James Gunn/Peter Safran-led DCU, beginning with Superman: Legacy in July 2025. What follows will be a (mostly) fresh start, in a completely new, interconnected universe of DC movies and series (no more CW shows either). Which Gunn has implied will be of higher quality than the DCEU, with an aim to put story/scripts first, and a refusal to churn out a ridiculous amount of movies/series per year or be slave to pre-set release dates. In other words, a movie/series is made only once the script is 100% ready to go (which isn't at all how Marvel, Star Wars, etc do things).

We'll see how that pans out, but for now, below is the current DCU slate, with more titles, release dates, filmmakers, and cast to be announced in 2024, potentially at either Comic-Con this summer, or another FanDome-type event, if not sooner...

Could Gunn's suicide squad and peacemaker be considered the first content of the DCU? Or do they occupy a vague space spanning the DCEU and DCU?
Thanks and gig'em

Technically, an ant from Krypton would still be stronger on Earth than any human, so size shouldn't really matter. But yeah, on the surface, aesthetically, she certainly seems like an odd choice.

We still don't have a straight answer, but considering Gunn is almost done writing Peacemaker season two, and says it is, indeed, part of the new DCU, yeah, it sounds like you're right. That said, considering the original, DCEU Justice League shows up in the Peacemaker season one finale, you would think he wouldn't want to cross streams like that.

I have faith that Gunn is going to make great movies in the DCU, but the passing of the torch, and the muddy handling of the "reboot" so far, sure has been a head scratcher.

Not technically DCU related, at least yet. But sounds like there's a world in which someday it could be. And if so, I think the animated Into the Spider-Verse route could definitely be a cool way to go...

I still think it's weird to force Peacemaker into the DCU, and it's kind of crazy that Gunn took so long to give us this clarification, but at least we finally have an answer and it mostly makes sense.

Search didn't turn up an Aquaman Lost Kingdom thread so I'll post here.

Just watched on Max in 4K. Good lord that movie looked like sheet! Just laughably bad. I checked twice to make sure all the motion smoothing features were off (which they always are) because it just looked way too clear. I don't understand why they make some newer movies and shows have that look. It makes it look like you're watching a stage play and makes all the costumes and set look cheap and fake.

In addition the framing and shot selection were horrific, as was the production design. I mean everything from the big bad guy to the controls in the sub should have been thrown out as a bad first draft. Who thought any of those looked good?

Lastly, Patrick Wilson runs very very oddly!

Just a nail in the coffin to this DCU era. Woof!

I've never heard of this "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" movie you speak of. Are you sure you didn't dream it? It's definitely not listed as part of the DCU.

Reading this thread makes my head hurt what will and won't be a part of dcu va dceu which I don't even know which is which.

This whole new era seems destined to fail in an environment where people are getting more and more tired of mediocre superhero movies. Will be interesting to see if Gunn can pull it off.

I think the only comic book movie I am looking forward to at this point is the sequel to the Batman.

I am only interested in Lanterns and Swamp Thing.

I can take or leave everything else.

I watched this not DCU movie over the weekend.

It was, in fact, a movie. That's about the best thing I can say about it.

I had to force myself to finish Lost Kingdom on Max, and I liked the first one.

The last hour or so was just a slog to get through. And having just seen Dune 2 the night before, it was remarkable how bad the cinematography was in comparison. Everything on land looked like a soap opera.

They could have and should have been WAY more clear in not just their communication of what's what, but in their decision making process in general. That said, the final answer is actually pretty simple...

Season two of Peacemaker and the Waller series are the ONLY upcoming installments that will have any kind of "connection" to the DCEU, and even then they're basically only using the same actors for the same characters, with relatively similar histories, but that's it.

Everything else - every other actor - is playing a new iteration of every other character. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Lanterns, etc - they're all completely new iterations with completely different backgrounds from their DCEU counterparts.

Clearly, Gunn couldn't let go of the Peacemaker world that he created, and that his wife just so happens to star in. Admittedly, Peacemaker was a huge success, one that I and many others loved, but he should have had the balls to "kill his darlings," so to speak and move on. He couldn't, though, and now here we are.

Still, I think the overall quality of the DCU is going to be so much better than the DCEU, the question is, in a world of superhero fatigue, will the audience even care, or understand what the hell is going on...

In a world where Captain Marvel and Aquaman (which both made a billion) are followed up with flops, I can't imagine getting much mileage out of, or kicking things off with, Creature Commandos and the Authority. But we'll see! Bold strategy cotton.

If Gunn had just left out the final scene there would be no issue with Peacemaker and TSS connecting to the DCU, making a whole new universe. Even though that would rob us of Captain Boomerang being in the Rogues and fighting Flash in a more worthwhile movie.

Creature Commandos is an animated Max series and The Authority will have already been introduced in the new Superman movie.

So how was the story?

Don't answer - I watched that POS last week. It was unwatchable almost as bad as WW1984, Batman & Robin, and Superman IV
