Saw it last night.

It was fantastic, but given the stellar quality of much of Chris Nolan's previous works, it ranks right in the middle for me. This was a gripping movie that never seemed to slow down despite not being an action movie and being set mostly inside of labs or other non-exciting locations.

The sound was incredible. During the Trinity test, I knew it was coming, I was sitting there watching all these amazing images playing out on screen to silence, knowing the bang was coming - and then chuckled when my wife flinched at that sudden explosive noise.

I saw it on the ONYX screen at the Star Cinema Grill in Richmond. That screen was definitely not IMAX, but I wasn't really sure what to expect out of it given what I'd read about it. But the image projection was damn near perfect. I do have to agree with my wife that the movie wasn't really one to see on such a screen, IMAX or ONYX, unlike something like Top Gun Maverick might have been.

My biggest complaint, if I can call it, regarding this movie - I doubt it is ever high on the re-watchability list. Yeah, I will definitely watch it again, but that won't be something I'll do as often as with any of his Batman movies, or Interstellar.

I was fortunate in that before I saw the movie I managed to get about 6-7 chapters in to American Promethius. It helped a ton.

I plan on re-watching the movie after I finish the book.

If they were in the freaking desert why was everyone wearing coats and sweaters during the Trinity Test and bomb drop in July and August?

Is this the first 1940s era movie you've ever seen?

Los Alamos is over a mile in elevation. The Trinity test site is just under 5000 ft above sea level. Having spent summer months near both locations, you'll want a jacket or sweatshirt handy when the sun gets low.

My wife and I loved it.

The three hour runtime doesn't feel like it and the movie definitely hit hard with us.

The actual test scene was quite emotional because I could empathize with the exultation of the scientists with doing something that had never been done before (and might have been bad news for them) while at the same time realizing what they had done and what would happen with their work. Tough stuff for those of us who grew up with bomb drills. RDJ, Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon and Emily Blunt absolutely crush it.

For a movie that's all dialogue and little action, it's a magnificent achievement. It'll take me some time to process because I'm not very bright, but I look forward to watching it again.

For those worried about the runtime: the second time you see boobs is a great time to run to the restroom. You won't miss anything.

3.5 thumbs up out of 4.

The hero we deserve. This should be a feature in every movie review, and with such memorable reference points as well.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but how much street cred does Christopher Nolan have that he got TWO recent former Best Actor winners (C Affleck and Malek) to play bit roles this movie?!?!

He, Tarantino, and PTA can get whoever the hell they want.

A 1940s era movie (or most movies made) has little to do with realism.

I have spent summer evening and mornings in Estes Park at over 8,000 feet in elevation and a long sleeve cotton shirt is fine.

Pacific Northwest was cold in the summer and yes a jacket was worn.

What did Oppenheimer really say to Einstein at the very end about the paper? The jack wad next to me decided that was the time to start packing it in and crumpling his popcorn bag up.

Yeah he was just expressing his concern about where the world was headed, and he tied it back to their earlier conversation on if the bomb would ignite the atmosphere.

For the record, with this scene, I don't think *Nolan* is saying we're doomed. That's not his verdict. Like most of the movie, he's simply depicting Oppenheimer's point of view, and it's Oppenheimer's belief that he himself just doomed the world. IMO, that final shot is a depiction of his guilt... literally, a destroyer of worlds.

I saw it last night and I am a huge WWII history buff and have been my entire life. I did wonder if those who did not have that backgroud would have trouble understsanding the plot, but this thread shows that they did not have trouble. I want to watch it next with captioning because some of the dialogue moves so fast my 75 year old ears could not keep up.

I am NOT a movie critic, but I can understand fully how a truely brilliant mind could fully understand the potential impact of being a species that create a weapon that could destroy life on earth as we know it. I remember so well those atomic bomb drills at school growing up and a nation gripped by fear during the face off of our crisis with Cuba.

I thought that the depiction of him walking out of the celebration of the first bomb and stepping on the charred ashes left from a largely evaporated body was telling. While no actual shots of the aftermath are shown, that is also his reaction to a film view of the aftermath.. We don't see the film, we see his reaction to the film.

On a much earlier question on wearing coats..remember there had been rain and a New Mexico high country night. It was probably quite cool. I knew that we were careless through not understand during the early years..not just war years..of atomic research and tested above ground. The one thing I came home and researched last night was if any of the scientists who were so exposed to Trinity died of radiation related issues and found my answer. I also looked at civilian casualties. The gradual switch in the depiction of RDJ's character from almost a narrator to a villain was beyond brilliant. So many great performances.

I've watched this scene another three times since posting it, and not only am I now more convinced than ever of what I said above, it makes me want to see the movie again so bad. Like a couple of Nolan movies in the past I grew to love and appreciate more over time, I can already feel this one rising the ranks as well.

I wonder if it will be one of those movies you turn on to watch specific parts of, versus entire an rewatch

Same here. There are so few movies I look forward to these days, and so few that live up to or exceed my expectations, but this one was a rare treat. Such a cool movie.
