Only part I winced every time Ted said F you to his mom. I get it, it's a show but man, I can't even imaging someone saying that to their mom.
That scene is actually brilliant when you think how far Ted has come for him to say what he really thinks. He has realized that a large part of his panic attacks and anger derived from his mom's inability to be honest with him. This was the only internal block left for Ted to resolve in my opinion. Him missing his son is the other part which has been hinted at throughout the show.

This outburst was also partly due to his talk with Jamie beforehand where Jamie says he would tell his dad F U, and also thank you.
Like Southlake, I also cringed at that scene and found it inappropriate & out of place. But I'd forgotten about the conversation with Jamie. Good call.

Ted Lasso using the f-bomb on his mom is a bridge too far. "Damn" would have worked just as well and required no suspension of disbelief.

I'm no Ted Lasso...but I would never, ever say FU to my mom under any circumstance.

Has Ted ever dropped the f-bomb before in any episode?

I would never drop an F bomb at my mom, but I don't have 30+ years of a messed up relationship with her like Ted did.

When he did his Roy impression in the episode he said "ffuuuuudddge" but then dropped the f bomb on mom, and mom didnt immediately dissolve into tears. Unrealistic, but it worked for this episode of a entertainment show not entirely rooted in reality.

It was a catharsis for him, probably both, actually. That was a long-needed discussion for both of them. He wasn't saying it to hurt her and I don't think she took it that way.

He can forgive Rebecca within the span of a three beat line pause in season 1 because "divorce is hard" but he repeatedly drops the f-bomb on his own mother...who, BTW, also lost a loved one to suicide?

Sorry. Didn't land this one.

I realize it was a call-back to the conversation Ted had with Jamie about what he'd say to his dad, but, I have to agree that the mom F-bomb tirade didn't sit well with me either. One, Ted doesn't talk that way, so it was very out of character. Second, it seemed the outrage was misplaced in that his mom hadn't been abusive to Ted and seemed to be very loving toward him. She just didn't want to deal with or talk about the grief of what happened to her husband. She also barely reacted to it. I would probably burst into tears if my son talked to me that way.

Granted, I have lived my life amongst a family and a social group that doesn't swear incessantly. But, Hollywood's obsession with and overuse of the F-bomb takes away from otherwise outstanding writing.

His mom's actions affected him much more deeply than Rebecca's. But you surely know that.

I loved the episode. Sad there's only one left.

But then I'll rewatch the entire series from start to finish.

Ted is emotionally repressed. It didn't surprise me that he'd eventually explode outwardly.

They most certainly did! Which is why it took all of 1:29 seconds of dialogue to sort this long term trauma before moving immediately to how his son misses him.

For reference, the writers devoted a full two minutes to Ted having to hash out sleeping with Sassy with the Diamond Dogs.

It feels like they figured they could save a lot of writing in resolving this life long inner repression by just having Ted drop the FU's on his Mom repeatedly to show he must really, really be hurt....because he wouldn't do such a thing unless he was really, really hurt.

A pretty clean wrap up for a guy who spent all of Season 2 talking to his shrink.

And you probably wouldn't discuss with your kids the "loud sex" the Australians were having. Not all families are the same, or interact the same way.

By normal, I assume you mean having a father who was as complimentary towards you as Jamie Tartt's old man. And had deep and meaningful (D&M in Australia speak) discussions as frequently as Ted Lasso's mom.

Unfortunately, it's not in everybody's skill set to let their children know they love them as much as somebody like Jamie Tartt's mom.

Yeah, one would think so.

A lot of it is generational. People learn how to parent from their parents and a lot of parents suck at it.

Edit: As I thought about this topic a little more, to put things in context, my dad was born in 1936 and his dad was born in 1909. So some of the parenting I experienced would have been based on World War I era methods.

My father was the first one to ever really make anything of himself. While he might have had money, that poor White way of thinking is ingrained. I think that's partially why I identify strongly with both the Jamie Tartt character and the Roy Kent character.

I think it was referring to this post:

I think some of y'all missed Teds character arc. Without all thd work with Sharon, Ted would've continued to bury what he felt towards his mom. And because of what Jamie said and his work with Sharon, he was able to say it.

And that can be cathartic for both parties.

Ha. If you think the f-bomb gets dropped a lot in Lasso, you should check out Shrinking. It's also a Lawrence-Goldstein project and every other word is ****. Great show though.

First episode of Succession this season has 70+ variations of **** and 91 total "curse" words.

Um…..sometimes a critique is just a critique.

And the decision to give Keely and Jack so much air time over several episodes and just 1:29 to Ted to patch up his life long trauma with Mum is a high order of dumb in an otherwise great show that I enjoy.

I was fine with the Ted/Mom storyline....I'll never understand the decision to waste so much of the season on Keeley/Jack. So much more interesting stuff they could have done with Keeley. That or just had more of the core characters screen time instead. Just a boring, generic subplot

Totally agree. Meaningless waste of time.
