Now that the Keeley / Jack relationship appears to have run its course, I'll say that I'm glad it's over and the ending was not really a surprise.

When I lived in Australia, I wound up coaching women's softball for several years. I'm Puerto Rican so I love beisbol but I can only deal with so much drama. Women in their 30s and older who wind up experimenting in Lesbianism usually create so much drama that they ruin the entire team. I could deal with coaching under 10 girls, even girls aged 13-18 (which was pretty difficult). After a few years of coaching the Over 35 Women, I had to call it quits because I just couldn't deal with the fallout from the lesbian relationships.

But what's funny is, softball wasn't nearly as bad as O35 women's soccer. By this age, there were a fair number of women who were open to experimenting and there were also a few women who there's not other way to say it but to say that they were recruiting.

My wife wound up playing on a soccer team with several couples and a few new recruits among them. Several of the women were married with boys aged between 7-15 or so. It was almost like a stereotype.

There was one lady who came on really hard to my wife. She was 6 feet tall and gorgeous but she was only interested in speaking to me as a gateway to get to my wife. It was really strange.

I watched several of these relationships come and go and almost every one of them wound up in a death spiral with nuclear fallout. The only one that really lasted were two women about 55 years old. There were plenty of explosions between those two - frequently on the field, sometimes during a game.

So, when Jack acted controlling and chastised Keely about the pix, that relationship was over.

Lmao wtf is this ***** Lesbians and bi women aren't from some different plane of existence or something, they are normal human beings just like everyone else. Some are going to handle relationships better than others, just like straight people. Do you know how many horny ass straight men and women act exactly like the lesbian women you described in your post? Who put getting laid over maintaining their interpersonal relationships at work/community groups/church/whatever? A whole lot, but it apparently doesn't cross your mind because that's "normal". Lesbians and bi women are "normal" too - and surprise! - they act like other normal people.

Jack was controlling and ultimately cared more about how Keeley made her look than about how Keeley felt. She showed some red flags (like love bombing) that Keeley ignored because it felt good in the moment.

Jack could have been a man and that story plays out in the exact same fashion. You don't think Keeley breaks up with Roy had they still been dating and he reacted in the same way Jack did? That was a cold and unempathetic reaction - any significant other that acts like that is getting dropped like a bad habit. But apparently because they are lesbians they are fundamentally incapable of having a stable relationship. This board can't see the forest for the trees sometimes.

But then what would texags complain about (other than our football program) if there wasn't some sort of culture war boogeyman threatening to upend their lives.

Also generally a whole lot of bi erasure in this thread but I'm not surprised on that front. "Omg Keeley is a lesbian now" - did she stop liking men or something?

Interesting side note I just found out - not a spoiler. And I had no clue.

This episode was written by Keeley Hazell who plays Rupert's 2nd wife Bex.

Keeley was a page 3 model and actress who has had a sex tape leaked publicly. So it is obviously very personal to her.

She also used to date Jason Sudeikis for about a year during I think the first season of Ted Lasso. they had met back on Horrible Bosses 2 in which she had a role. And Jason apparently had a crush on her for a long time (back before Olivia Wilde). they dated just after Olivia Wilde and Jason broke up but it was said to be "not serious".

Anyway I think the tie-ins there are interesting. Obviously Keeley Hazell was the inspiration for Keeley Jones. And now it has come full circle as Keeley Hazell's life is directly reflected in this last episode. It doesn't make it any better though, but maybe it's why it is being told.

Forgot to mention she is writing a memoir as well called "Everyone's Seen My Tits."

Yeah, the episode made a lot more sense when I saw her name listed as a writer in the end credits.

I will say that I do appreciate the subtle things they're doing with the relationship between Rebecca and Becks (Keeley Hazell's character). She seems to know that she went from being the sidepiece to the wife of a man with a sidepiece.

Did anyone else notice the green matches Ted had in his hand in the bar at the beginning of the episode? In the bar with the ex and the therapist just before they get their food.

Laugh away. How about if we took it from a different direction?

I think the writers for the show did a great job of illustrating how a number of females in their 30s are open to dabbling in same sex relationships but those initial experimentations usually wind up taking a nose dive from 40,000 feet into a catastrophic fireball.

Or, we could also celebrate the fact that the writers pointed out that intra-office relationships are a bad idea, even if they're same sex. That's a pretty wholesome message but the writers were edgy enough to switch up the genders.

I will confess that on the hetero side of relationships in the office, or during extra-curricular activities, I really only have experience with fairly stable male-female relationships, the standard one-night stand on the road (with my rock & roll friends - females really do throw it at them, especially singers) and the standard above board and secret intra-office relationships.

It was pretty common at my old office for the hot Administrative Assistants to wind up marrying the top Sales Reps. Less common was for the VP of Engineering (female) to have a hidden relationship with the head of Sales (male).

I haven't seen too many whirlwind office romances but I have seen a number of lesbian train wreck romances.

Also, I do want to point out that Keeley and Roy were already broken up before Jack swooped in. So Jack didn't break them up unless you count funding Keeley's PR firm. Maybe that's Jack's MO. Give a hot young female money to start her own business and then fly in and try to date her. When it doesn't work out, pull funding.

Remember the head accountant's snow globe collection from all the times she's done this before? And Jack indicating that the accountant chick liked to party hard.

I think that whole storyline has played out and Keeley will probably return to do something PR related in Football with Richmond.

After thinking about it, I think my biggest issue is that Keeley is now so far separated from the club, outside of attending a match every few episodes, that it doesn't even feel like she's in the same show anymore. I would care a lot more about her relationship with Jack if it involved anyone or anything central to the plot of the entire series other than just Keeley.

I think it would have been much better to just have Roy and Keeley struggle and work past them both being busy with the club and the PR firm.

The show is completely saccharine so all happy endings that can be imagined will probably happen.
Been thinking about this and yes, to some extent I agree.

But I'd offer that the show is uncomfortably aspirationally saccharine. It paints an optimistic picture of what humanity ought to be like, yet makes us confront the cynicism in our own hearts that perhaps doesn't really want things to be that good.

Take Ted for example. The ex-wife and Nate storylines bother us. Why doesn't he fight back? We would fight back! And yet if the shoe were on the other foot, we would absolutely want a Ted on the other side who forgives us unconditionally. It's an internal conflict we all struggle with - we frequently treat others the exact opposite of the way we'd like to be treated.

So I predict, that yes, the show will have a "happy" ending - and probably in an overly contrived and fake way… but I think that's the point, because it will leave us with a bit of lament that the world doesn't actually work this way.

And now that I'm done preaching, I'll state that I totally hope they end it in a Sandlot style recap of what happens to everyone.
Bill Lawrence shows have not tended to have overly smarmy endings., though I mainly am referencing Scrubs. He will give characters happy endings, but it would be more likely to be something like the wife and the therapist breaking up, Ted and her having a good relationship as parents but not getting remarried...and Ted being ok with that.
So they are happy, but hes not just magically forgetting what she did. There is a path where they do get back together, because people ARE willing to overlook a lot of things to be with the person they see as their soul mate.

Good to know.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply that I think it's going to turn into an "everyone gets back together" situation. But I do think it'll be a good, "happy" ending.

I think we're due a pretty big tragedy before we get there though. Keeley's thing isn't enough (we all wanted that to happen).

My bold prediction: Michelle dies. The green matchbook is fascinating to me so this is my easy way of making those predictions come true. Ted has to take a leave of absence or maybe quits outright. Nate stunningly quits West Ham to fill in for Ted (gives him agency rather than getting fired by Rupert). Then way down the line after a period of appropriate grief, Ted and Rebecca somehow reconnect and get together and she becomes a mother to Henry.

Y'all can write the rest of the characters.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. It applies to straight and gay couples.

Every straight women I know has had "issues" with every other woman in their life at one time or another.

We moved when my youngest was 12. He met some guys at school his first day at our new city. They've been best friends for 10+years and still hang out as much as possible when they're all home from college.

All of the girls he/they know have had multiple best friends, fall outs with girl friends, huge blow ups in public and generally *****yness towards each other. Yet the 4 guys still get along just fine.

Women = Drama
Men = Fights and they get over it and stay friends, or move on.

It's too obvious and has to be a misdirection. He pulls the matchbook out (doesn't mention the color - but it is green) and we're meant to think about the fortune tellers prophecy.

There are a couple fairly big issues with this happening - first, I can't recall a single moment of romantic spark between Ted and Rebecca (from either point of view) in 2 1/2 seasons. They are supportive and loyal to each other, but nothing further. Secondly, Sassy. Not saying Ted and Sassy get together, that's just a fling of convenience. I can't see Rebecca making that move. Finally, it would just be sloppy writing.

I watched the episode again, and I think it gets worse, not better.

A few things:
- The show is at its best when we're with the main characters and team and they are interacting with each other. They could have cut out so much of this episode and added it on the front end to show how the team is coming together and playing the new system well instead of the brief intro we got.

- the longer runtimes I think are hurting the show, not helping. They are trying to add too much, and most of it doesn't add anything to the show, it could be cut for the better. The shorter episodes made it feel like everything included was important and contributing.

- the Keeley/PR/Jack storyline is bad. No, not because of the bi story, but because 1) it has separated her from the team and she has almost no interaction with anyone outside of Rebecca and even that has been limited 2) what is the point? She has had no character growth - all that has happened is she is again jumping from relationship to relationship. We have seen her doing no PR work, so what is the point of her character? 3) She's been given what feels like more screen time than like any other character and for what purpose?

- Ted: Has Ted also not grown as a character? We spent all last season with Dr. Sharon and Ted finally opening up and getting help. Now he finds out about his ex wife might be getting engaged and instead of talking to Dr. Sharon he goes right to psycho I need to hire a PI? That doesn't seem like growth.

- Nate: Whereas Jamie's character arc and redemption has been fantastic, they are pushing Nate's too fast and he really hasn't changed or had anything happen to make him redeemed. He's still a jerk but now with a girlfriend that is super into him? Again - there was a lot of screen time dedicated to Nate and Jade that didn't add much. The part with Ted/Beard/Henry was good but that just showed him thanking Rupert for making sure they don't come back

- Positives: Beard's talk with Henry, all of them singing Hey Jude (this felt like a very Ted Lasso moment), Higgins running to the diamond dogs meeting, Roy's contribution, adding Trent to the diamond dogs, Rebecca helping Keeley, Jaime's growth and apology (two s's!),

There's still a few episodes left, so they might smooth it out and stick the landing, but this episode didn't fill me with hope. It feels like they are running out of time and still have a lot of things to tie up.

Pretty accurate assessment. It's turned from one story with characters interacting with each other to multiple stories focused on individuals and stretchs the ability to intertwine it all together.

A couple funny moments, but overall probably my least favorite episode of the series.
WAY too much Keeley...seems like they wasted a lot of time on a storyline that's not going to have much payoff...even if she ends up back with Jamie or Roy.

But the Diamond Dogs with Trent as a new member, Roy pretending to not care but still caring, and Higgins running through the door...was AWESOME. Loved that scene. Ted with Henry and Coach Beard being a good 'uncle' was heart warming too.

Rebecca finally showing Ted some 'tough love' by telling him to get over it with his ex and enjoy being with his son was also well done.

And they can keep drawing me back in with Nate. He's drifting further and further from Rupert, so I hope he can fully reconcile with Ted. I like the way they used Henry decked out in West Ham gear...he doesn't care about the egos...he's just excited to see his friend Nate coaching football. Ted does too. That scene said a whole lot in a short amount of time.

But yeah I'm tired of Keeley. Ok, you're a flashy, girlie, unapologetic, woman trying to make it in your own business and own your flaws while searching for true love...great. We got it.

I was really hoping they'd focus more on Keeley dealing with the challenges of being the boss, learning from Rebecca, and moving her toward something bigger...like being a leader at one of the other football teams. While they've done some of that, I think they've chosen more to create massive drama with her personal life, which to me cheapens her character and makes her seem weaker. There's still the opportunity to give her a better arc, but I think it's become drama for the sake of drama and takes away from what makes the show great.

Rebecca was also great dissing on Paris.

I hope that they do not make Collin's outing into some huge negative gay-bashing scene because it wouldn't be realistic in 2023. Teams have gay guys come out all the time. It's old hat now. I hope it is the Captain gathering his team and collectively embracing Collin's orientation because he is family and that's all that matters.

Do not worry, zero percent chance that happens. The reason for McAdoo's gruff face reaction (maybe he has no other?) will be revealed as disappointment Collin wasn't already being his true self and not trusting his teammates to be open about it. Which is a valid reaction as far as trusting teammates, but also a rather simplistic way for an outsider to look at Collin's very personal situation.

Random thoughts:
There is a lot of dislike for the Keeley PR firm but maybe that was the device that kept Roy from running off to Spain so he could eventually stay with team as a coach. Now, where they took the PR plot could be criticized as irrelevant.

Ted asked Rebecca for a PI. Any chance she could have had a PI or someone intervene with Teds wife to have her remove an engagement ring before picking up Henry?
