That kind sucks, doesn't it? Not to be able to read for fun and pleasure.
I mean, I find it humorous you don't remember some of these characters since you're "in the industry" but in reality, who gives a flip...?
I guess everyone can pile on you, because you've 1) read the books at some time in the past and 2) you're now watching this series - so of course you should remember all the details.
In any case, my wife who has neither read the books nor watched the movies, would ever be able to name ANY of the LOTR/Hobbit characters.

I will say, as I was reading the chapter Minas Tirith all the way through House of Healing, I kept thinking about this show, the Numenorians, how they built the stronghold of Gondor, and the people of Gondor descending from Numenorians. It was really fun to read Aragorn as Isildur's heir and his declaration of that through the Paths of the Dead and in the Pelennor fields.
I know there are some squabbles with this show, but man, on a reread and getting to put some faces and actions to the great people who made Gondor, it enhances the story for me a little more. It's as you said, the screen making the words you read come to life is a cool feeling.
But the way, the run of Book V - chapters Minas Tirith through The Black Gates might be the best run of chapters in fantasy writing history.
Following up my last post. After reading Minas Tirith through House of Healing, I want a few things from this show when the strength of Numenor comes to Middle-Earth.
I want to see:
- Ithilien
- Arnor
- Osgiliath in her glory
- Minas Ithil
- Building of Orthanc
- Building of Minas Tirith
The one I think I want most is Ithilien because of the way Faramir talks about it.

The Rohirrim are my favorite people in the trilogy. I love Tolkien describing them as singing for joy as they are battling in the Pelennor Fields. The casting of the show is excellent, and even better than advertised. Really happy to see the cast giving a lot of interviews to highlight the cultural importance of inclusion.
The stories are for everyone.

frankly, the black actors are actually standing out as some of the best performances.
harfoots, dwarves, being cast by people of african descent, none of that is a problem at all imo - i can see that making sense, or at least not being distracting.
but literally not one of the elves is well cast.
the worst casting frankly are the really frumpy people, or actors that look like hobbits playing epic elvish characters.
tolkien's descriptions of galadriel, celeborn, gil galad, etc., really all elves, are always very charismatic, and this show just looks like they accidentally pulled the cast from some 'office space/romcom' sitcom and put them in middle earth costumes.
elindil is doing a good job. some of the others fall pretty short of the glamorous descriptions of their society described by Tolkien too.

I get what you're saying. I think "black dude soldier elf" is good casting. But Galadriel looks/moves like she's 5'2" (which she probably is) and Elrond just looks "off".
My biggest casting gripe is that Celebrimbor does in fact look like a Hobbit and not an Elf.

Just have the elves, whatever human race they may be, look like the Jackonson/Alan Lee elves. The stocky bodies and short hair is just weird.

All of the Southlander humans kinda suck tbh. The best character was the big old dude who was kicking tail before being killed, and he wasn't really developed.
I like the Drow (shout out to dearly departed Community D&D episode) but the chick is more pretty than likeable.
Oh, yeah, the kid. I like him more now after Galadriel gave him her sword, so he seemingly has a new purpose of sorts/has been forgiven, but it had been rough sledding up to that point.
