I know everyone wants to connect characters across time and properties...but going from revered as God-like to run of the mill army sergeant seems like quite the downfall.

He'd have to survive the battle where Sauron loses the ring, maybe he runs and hides. Gets demoted/imprisoned until Sauron's return which causes his continued deformation.

Numenor just didn't flow for me in Ep 4. The whole mini uprising, not sure what the point of that scene was. We already know they don't like elves based on the entire time Galadriel has been there. It gets squashed instantly and by the end, the Queen is going to send armies to help elves/men.

It was already stated, but the scene with the leaves falling would have been so much better without the dialogue. Let the audience figure it out! The scene would work the same without having to explain it like we're children. Or, only add a single line "not idly do the leaves…." she realizes she is living her dream and sees her mistake.

What about the palantir? I thought they were simply communication devices, but I also thought evil didn't have one yet, but I guess they do already?

This show is playing very loose with established canon

Thought this was the best episode yet, only partially because of no Harfoots.

The cinematography, scenery and effects were mostly all great to excellent. The ship at sea scene though when shown with water was kind of green screen cheesy looking.

Really like the Adar character. That actor is doing a good job with that character I thought...hope we get to see a lot more of him. I like the route they are going with him not being the traditional stupid but strong orc leader trope.

The guild guy who starts the mini-uprising seems to be buddy buddy with Pharazn, the bearded politician who conveniently steps in to calm the crowd and win their approval. They nod at each other, and guild guy was seen before being close to Pharazn. So it's likely this was a false flag operation to increase Pharazn's popularity.

As for the leaves scene, yeah I had no idea they were an omen tbh. I needed the explanation although yeah it could have been more subtle.

The production values have been good so far, but to me the scenes on Nmenor seem "small" with a Ten Commandments feel to them. A group of about 100 people are supposed to convey the political attitude of over a million?

Just read that during the scene where Galadriel touches the palantir, there's a shield in the background that could have been Tuor's shield he was gifted in Gondolin. It's a shield made up of swan wings.

"As told in The Book of Lost Tales Part Two, the Elves in Gondolin treated Tuor very highly: "Upon a time the king caused his most cunning artificers to fashion a suit of armour for Tuor as a great gift, and it was made of Ñoldorin steel overlaid with silver, but his helm was adorned with a device of metal and jewels like two swan-wings, one on either side, and a swan's wing was wrought on his shield"."

There's also a sword leaning against the wall that some think is Narsil, and there's a helm in the background that some fans think is the Dragon Helm of Dor-lomin. Could just be wishful thinking, but it's cool to think about.

Someone on here mentioned the sword after the episode, not by name, but with the implication. I don't know the full history of it other than it was Elendil's. Wasn't the scene with the sword in background in the capital?

How in the world do they do that "product placement" without blowing right through the IP wall? If that's really what it is they are all but begging the Tolkien estate to sue them into oblivion. Because they can't know any of that.

Off the top of my head, what I can remember is that Narsil was forged by the dwarven smith Telchar of Nogrod in the First Age. It's old AF.

I know I'm opening myself up to some grief here, but what does IP mean in this reference? It's been mentioned several times and I still haven't figured it out yet.

Intellectual property. The show and writers don't have any rights or access to the stories where any of that stuff is. All they get to work from is anything in LOTR or the Hobbit.

I would guess there is some real legal wrangling on what all they could and couldn't say and perhaps got into a lot of appendicies and even some source material of the books that is letting them dance a really fine line.

Are blue wizards mentioned in either of those?

Just wondering about the meteor man.

Every time I read it.

Does the property include the movies? Because Bilbo asks Gandalf about the blue wizards in An Unexpected Journey.

I would imagine as long as it is not named, its fair game

I'd imagine they're stretching what's in the appendices. I still don't get why the estate would hamstring the storytelling and not allow access to the other books. Is it tied into his son's complete dislike of anything being adapted?

More likely the rights to that content is held by someone else.

I think it's also fair to say rights holders want to roll slowly here instead of turning it all over to Amazon right away. Gotta build trust with one of the few remaining exclusive properties

I'm a pretty big lifelong LOTR fan ever since I had the Fellowship on an album with a follow along picture book as a young child. I cannot get into this series and I gave it 4 episodes. I'm not very interested in the characters, the dwarves and harfoots look and act like C class fantasy characters, I have no real interest in who or what the stranger is who kills poor lightning bugs.

I had really high hopes for this and for Wheel of Time but Amazon is just falling flat for me in the fantasy genre sadly.

Unless I'm missing something, the Tolkien Estate hasn't sold the rights to those books to anyone.

I'd imagine you can check back in when the season is over to get a feel for if you should revisit this decision or not.

I am almost caught up.... it is as if they went and rounded up all of the CW directors to create this show. It is outrageous that what is being shown cost this much. This has low budget made for tv or cw written all over it. Someone took them straight to the bank.

I still don't get the economics behind producing content that is this expensive. I've read that Amazon is looking for people who return or login and use their video service after not doing so for some period of time... is that really worth this type of investment? I'm still so confused.

I really believe it will get pulled before they complete as much as they say they are going to do, and that is the thing giving me the most pause with trying to invest in the story.

It is not worth investing in at all. But that doesn't mean you can't just watch for shallow enjoyment to see where they go. Unless you are time constrained. If you are, then choose something else. The GOT/HOD work is so much better than this for the genre. The fact that they put this out thinking it was good is beyond my comprehension. This much money should have given the opportunity to create something pretty special in the Tolkien world. Instead, it was wasted opportunity.

I find the dwarves more interesting than the elves or the Numenoreans.

The dwarves are great.

I actually like the little Harfeet, but it's obvious I'm in quite the minority.

I dont' mind the hobbits, although I think some of that is because I am watching with one of my kids who likes them. But their story is just very sluggish. They only have 1 mystery and they are just staggering along with moving it forward.

Ya. I'd be up for a 2-3 + seasons of just dwarves.
