August is a month of first days.
With them often come jitters, nerves and excitement.
Not for Texas A&M soccer’s Bobby Shuttleworth.
“I don’t really have much emotion in terms of it being my first one,” he said Monday ahead of his head coaching debut. “Every game I’ve ever been a part of, I want to win, so things don’t really change for me.”
His arrival is a big change for Aggie soccer.
At 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday, the Shuttleworth era will officially begin as A&M takes on Rice in Houston.
He’s the first “new” coach in program history, taking the reins from G Guerrieri, who won 507 games across 33 years.
Like his predecessor, the newbie is a soccer lifer, playing 14 years in the MLS before turning to coaching. In 2025, Shuttleworth helped Florida State win the national title.
“I go about it the same way I go about it as a player and then as a coach,” he said of his preparation. “Dialed in and just trying to help the team.”
Helping the Aggies would mean improving on last year’s 5-7-5 record as they missed the NCAA Tournament for a third time in five years.
In Shuttleworth’s estimation, his first team has a chance to be pretty good.
His intensity is helping them get there.
“Bobby just instills in us that we’re all here for a reason,” defender Hattie Patterson said. “We all have the technical ability. We’re meant to be here, so we deserve to be here. We’re ready to go.
“From the first day that we had him in the spring, it’s the same as it is now. It’s intense every single day. He expects a lot of us with every action that we do. It’s a high standard, but I think we’re all equipped to handle it.”
Of course, high standards aren’t necessarily new to Aggie soccer.
They’ve won 18 conference titles and been to 28 NCAA Tournaments, including the 2014 NCAA Women’s College Cup.
However, that’s Shuttleworth’s goal.
His quest to bring A&M its first begins Wednesday with his first.
