Or… Nate's episode simply had funnier sketches, including one of the best in years (the George Washington sketch).

Politics had nothing to do with it.

You're trying way too hard here, bud.

When f16 is your #1 forum, politics has everything to do with everything.

No, only a very small minority and to satisfy a very specific curiosity.

I understand your implication but you're incorrect in that assumption. I would actually prefer if politics be left out of almost everything.

No disagreement whatsoever; the Nate episode was far and away funnier.

My point was that (lately at least) when SNL tries to involve political humor in the show, they seem to lose focus moreso on their desired messaging and lose focus on the humor aspect of the sketches.

Or they just don't do political humor well for some other reason. I.E. when they avoid political humor the sketches tend to have a higher % hit rate.

Love SG! I liked his monologue and thought it "pushed the envelope" in regards to SNL. Love how that one violinist just gave him the evil eye the whole time!
Wondered if I was insane in noticing that.

Even went back and looked at two previous episode monologues on Hulu because she looked like the type that might not show emotion.

Nope, she regularly smiles and claps, she pretty clearly had something against Gillis.

This can be seen in the disaster of a cold open sketch where the writers/cast made a point to drag Trump and the republicans that have endorsed him (albeit a promising concept if executed differently) and I'm sure everyone was waiting for Shane to make an entrance as Trump himself.
I wish it wasn't Trump because you'll probably say this is TDS, but I swear it's not...I think the weird phenomenon of politicians ENTHUSIASTICALLY bootlicking Trump after he has completely trashed them is so weird and very ripe for satire. Especially recently with Tim Scott.

I wish it wasn't Trump because you'll probably say this is TDS, but I swear it's not...I would say it about any politician: I think the weird phenomenon of politicians ENTHUSIASTICALLY bootlicking Trump after he has completely trashed them is so weird and very ripe for satire. Especially recently with Tim Scott.
It's almost like everyone who worships him is oblivious to what a colossal POS he is and that, to him, everyone around him is expendable including his own wife and children.

Yes. That being said, that skit was one of the worst opening skits in a while. It was almost completely crickets the entire time in the studio.

This. It was an astute observation of a very real, very pathetic phenomenon. The problem wasn't that it was political, or that it was rightfully making fun of these sycophants and their bootlicking. The problem was that the execution of the sketch itself was lacking, not as funny as it could have been, and ended on a dud. I chuckled a bit throughout, but then when it was over was like, "Wait, that was it?" It had no arc, no second act, no twist, and instead felt like the type of sketch that ends the show, not begins it.

I also thought the cold open was a good idea with poor execution. Not funny at all. On the other hand, I thought the Trump Shoes commercial was pretty funny.

I'm sorry. If you can't laugh at that, you have no sense of humor.

ScarJo is a heavy hitter. (We all know why she was there, but still).

If you can't find that funny, you'll never find anything funny.

Nah, I kinda get it after watching Colin and Che but unless you follow politics regularly, it's wasn't funny at all. It's just political shots that I didn't understand. I have no idea who that senator chick is. You can say whatever you want but I'm just being honest because I don't watch CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, etc anymore.

Wait, you don't even know what it's referencing?

Yet still decided to complain about it on the internet?

First of all, how is it even possible you can be *on* the internet and not know the reference? Especially considering there has been nothing more memed or talked about on the news in the past 48 hours.

Secondly, like… 75% of why any opening political sketch works is because it almost always mocks a current political event. So of course you're not going to find it funny if you have no idea what's going on. That's like complaining about the punchline of a joke without having heard the setup.

But that's the entire point of the opening political sketch! And has been for decades now. It's specifically for people "who follow politics regularly."

Sooooo you you want your weekly sketch comedy show, to not play with current events, because you "were too busy to pay attention to them"?

It's an election year. You should just probably go ahead and tune out now.

(It's been very good/fair comedy this year for anybody who has been paying attention ).

I didn't think it was funny because I've never watched television before. Don't know why they have to cater to the audience who has previously watched TV before yesterday. Sorry I'm not up on "technology."
