Is she that bankable though? She's definitely a movie star, but her solo movies haven't done all that great. Birds of Prey did $200M worldwide, I,Tanya was great but a fairly small indie type movie, and The Suicide Squad was an HBO Max day and date release that didn't even hit 200.

I think she's still a tier or two down from the A-List.

Margot Robbie as Barbie + Ryan Gosling as Ken = box office gold. It's the perfect mesh of movie star with a globally famous brand name; one of the few historic brand names remaining in pop culture that hasn't been turned into a movie yet, which is going to count for a lot as well. There's a fresh, fun factor here that will be off the charts.

Throw her + Gosling together and bam.

I'm with TC on this, I could see Barbie as a dark horse box office hit over Indy 5.

Indy 4 was so meh that I never even saw it. It 5 comes out as "okay", there's going to be a lot that just choose to skip it.

We will see how the marketing does on both. I've seen way more RE: Barbie buzz than Indy 5 as of this point in time.

Maybe, but I challenge the idea of her being a proven bankable movie star quite yet.

Kind of funny that I learned that there was a barbie movie being made in a thread about a movie about nuclear bombs. Funnier still is that there seems to be a budding convo about said barbie movie.

I think Barbie is such a strange concept that it will either do gangbusters or no one will care. I don't think it's a slam dunk at all.

Indeed, if this keeps up, then the topic header should be changed.

Regarding Oppenheimer and its money-making potential, I wouldn't expect that one to be worthy of watching its totals. It's just not going to be an appealing topic to the type of wide audience that leads to huge box office numbers. For someone like me, with a fervent interest in all things WWII, sure, and I may even see it multiple times, but I doubt we'll see posts here next summer about how poster X was compelled to go again and again ala Top Gun Maverick.

I have a daughter who once enjoyed playing with Barbie dolls, so I get that appeal, but that movie is not one I'll likely see. But I have a strong interest in the Mission Impossible movie, a slightly less strong interest in The Marvels, and given that I consider Indiana Jones my all-time favorite movie character, no doubt I'll be seeing that one multiple times. I think Oppenheimer will more than likely be a see-it-once kind of movie, even for me, but will say that I had the same thought about Dunkirk, which I ultimately saw a few times because I absolutely loved the musical score combined with many of the sound effects.

On the Oppenheimer trailer, I noticed as it was going through its countdown, there seemed to be a train-like sound. Wonder what that is supposed to be?

Oh please. Indy will outgross it with its eyes closed.

Didn't you also predict that Jurassic Park and Thor would beat the hell out of Top Gun?

Indy should make a lot of money, but if it's another Crystal Skull, it won't get the repeat viewings that drive the big numbers.

True, but I knew it would be big at least. Just not THAT big.

I just don't see Barbie appealing to about half the population.

I have complete trust that Gerwig is going to deliver a delightful film in Barbie that is going to charm audiences, and given the stars and subject matter, is going to make lots of money. Its not JUST Gosling and Robbie, Will Farrell is in it, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon. Its got a cast that appeals to a lot of different fan bases, and without knowing much about story or anything, but just knowing the people behind the camera, I'd say it'll end up having crossover appeal.

BUT...I think what these movies do BO-wise depends on how good they are. It turns out, movies can make a lot of money on brand name alone, but they can't be runaway successes unless they are good (Thor, DS2, JW3 vs Top Gun: Maverick as examples).

If all the movies listed are actually good? Then it's a no brainer that Indy 5 will take the cake on BO, IMO. But none of those movies listed seem like they will open north of $125 million, so they will have to be Top Gun: Maverick hits to make any BO history.

Ha, only because I'm getting the same Spidey sense about Barbie as I did about Top Gun, when I said it was going to massive, and everyone basically laughed at/dismissed me.
. Pretty sure you said the same thing about Tron Legacy in 2005 so…

Tron Legacy came out in 2010, and even though I was definitely excited for it, I never made any bold box office predictions for it.

Not true! All I ever said was that the SCRIPT was amazing, long before it ever had a director or cast attached.

I was pretty surprised, but the crowd went nuts tonight for the trailer. Saw it in IMAX and it was so intense, and so damn loud, in the best way. It feels like sound design is going to be a big thing with this one. The footage itself is also definitely in black and white, which is so odd to me, but I still don't know if I buy that an entire summer blockbuster will be presented that way. I'm betting there's more to it. Regardless, the second it ended with Robert Downey Jr.'s "The man... who moved... the earth" a guy yelled "YEAH!!!!" at the top of his lungs, and then everyone else joined in and cheered. It's crazy how *anything* Nolan does can get that kind of reaction, even a freaking historical biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer.

I prefer to imagine that he's the world's biggest Oppenheimer fan and historian and has been waiting his entire life for someone to make a film adaptation of the life of his hero.

Still no official drop of the trailer online, obviously. If it's not online tomorrow - after a full week in theaters - sadly, I'm going to assume this is Nolan's new go-to move of not release the first, year-out teaser online, since he did the exact same thing with Tenet's teaser. I totally get not wanting it online for opening weekend. Seeing a trailer for the first time in-theater is a rare experience these days, and makes it feel like more an "event" for sure. But to straight up not release it online *ever* is such a pointless, pretentious move, one I don't understand at all.

I don't love that its not released online, but at least its consistent with his idea of the theater experience. I think studios are too quick to release these trailers online to "build the buzz" that it actually undercuts the symbiotic relationship a trailer and the film it leads into can have. If you are trying to support the theater as a business, keeping the trailers offline, especially for movies that are far off in the future, is a good idea.

I get that can come off as pretentious, but I get it on some level.
TCTTS

But literally no one is going to the theater at this point, seven days in, just to see the trailer.

I'm not arguing that people are going to go just for the trailer. But if more directors had theater only trailers for their films, perhaps it might restart that practice.

Also, these two trailers (Tenet and Oppenheimer) in particular are more dialogue/sound driven than visual. That theater sound system is what brings the hype, so it would probably get a womp womp reception online anyway.

Ha, holy crap, I just figured out why. Every time the trailer starts over, the time stamp/countdown clock *in* the trailer is different. It's literally counting down to the release of the movie, like we originally figured, except it's somehow doing so in the trailer itself, minute by minute, and will presumably just keep repeating/counting down for the next 11 months. In addition to the official site version below, it's also doing the same thing on the YouTube and Twitter versions. Amazing…

Two things, watch Murphy's eyes during his walk, I don't know if it's intentional but there's a super creepy moment where the flash lights up his eyes.

Also revealing the title the O appears first, obviously a foreshadow to the big moment in the movie when the first bomb is triggered.

I could see Nolan using black and white on much of the movie but having the fires or the time after the explosion being in color to strongly emphasize the dawn of a new age.

Interesting. Get a kind of Schindler's List type of vibe from it.

It does make it feel like you are watching recorded history.

That is because nolan probably figured out time travel and the movie is set in the actual 40s.
