Wow, Spielberg not directing. This is huge. That said, I can think of no one more capable to take the reins than Mangold, director of Walk the Line, Logan and Ford v Ferrari...

No thanks. I'd rather no Indy at all than someone that's not Harrison Ford.

Spielberg not directing is good news in my opinion. Dude is WAY past his prime. This might actually not suck.

I know it's been said a lot that there's no reason Indiana Jones couldn't have been the "American Bond". I guess Ethan Hunt has kind of taken that roll on, especially in the last 10 years, and I guess that makes more sense as a direct comparison, secret government agent, gadgets, etc.

Love seeing James Mangold attached to anything though.

I agree. I think this could be super fun and fresh with Mangold.

And just for the record, Ford IS returning, but it sounds like his role might be somewhat limited. Which leads me to believe he'll be passing the torch in some form or fashion...

Totally in for Mangold. And I'd love to see them explore the idea of serializing Indy, while Ford is definitely the gold standard we're looking at the last Indy EVER if the franchise doesn't evolve somehow.

I get the argument, but the difference is that no Bond actor was Bond for more than what, 15 years? (Aside: Holy crap, is Daniel Craig the longest-tenured Bond actor now?)

Harrison Ford has been Indy for 40 years now. Even when they're not making new movies, he remains Indiana Jones to generations.

Same with Han Solo. And that's probably my biggest gripe with that entire movie. It never felt like Han.

Indiana Jones? More like...Indiana Old.

+1

Didn't they try that with Bourne and it tanked?

That was an expansion of the Bourne universe, not a different Jason Bourne.

I don't necessarily think there should be a new actor to play Indy, but I'd love to see some way of continuing the stories through another character.

The lore of Indiana Jones started feeling hollow in Crystal Skull. There doesn't seem to be enough to draw from. In keeping with the same timeline, is the big adventure going to be in a hidden pyramid at Woodstock?

Indiana Jones and the Hippys of Peace.

Health or just that the script isn't any good. I don't think it's either, just an interesting observation.

I saw Call of the Wild last night. Pretty decent movie, but one thing that it shows is the Harrison Ford is young enough to be in the outdoors but too damn old to be swinging from vines or fighting off Nazis/Russians.

If Harrison Ford is taking on a reduced role in this movie, then it's not gonna be much of an Indiana Jones movie, is it? Harrison Ford, for me, will always be Indiana Jones, more so than even Han Solo. Having said that, I'm fine with recasting the role with the right actor. I loved the shot that circulated a while back of Chris Pratt in the Indy costume, and frankly, I think he could be right for the role.

I think the loss of Steven Spielberg is not optimal. I've long considered these movies his more so than George Lucas'. I know that Indiana Jones was Lucas' idea, and Spielberg was basically a director for hire when Lucas hired him to put together Raiders of the Lost Ark. (The story went that these two friends were vacationing together in Hawaii, and Spielberg said something about doing a Bond flick, and Lucas suggested something better).

I'm also expecting that John Williams may be too old to compose the score (nope, have seen nothing reported on that, just a gut feeling).

I think the problem was the lack of Nazis. He was always a character of the 30s/40s, yet here we have this rather iconic shot of Indiana Jones, with hat, coat, and whip visible, standing on a hill with a rising mushroom cloud in the distance. That just didn't feel like Indiana Jones.

Take the stories back to the 30s with a new actor in the role. It would be great to return to a younger Indiana Jones once again standing toe to toe with the Nazis. If the current timeline continues we'd have to see an 80yo Jones battling it out in the 1960s against the hippies. Depressing.

Well, that would certainly be saying something, considering he did Crystal Skull.

Just do what they did in the Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. Have Harrison Ford reminiscing with someone at the beginning of the movie and flashback to the new actor set in the 30s/40s.

If they do cast someone, they have to that mix of characteristics Harrison Ford has. You believe him in the action, he is believable in the school/academic settings. I love Chris Pratt as an actor, but I don't seem him being able to pull the role off.

Meh. How many minutes total across 4 movies is Indy in a school setting? Like 10?

Star Lord is a lot like a beta Indiana (or Indianda if you must) Jones but I would rather someone fresh get the role. So many roles in Hollywood without needing to keep repeating actors.

That being said, I'd love to see Joe Keery ( Steve Harrington from Stranger Things) in the role or someone like him.

Edit- Keery, not Kerry

T-minus 7 days until we find out they're casting a black lesbian in a wheelchair as Indiana Jones 2.0

I agree with Pat. I like Chris Pratt but he's too steeped on the comedy side. Ford has never been a comedy guy and Indiana Jones is a serious character with occasional comedy in the form of situational reactions (shooting the Arab with the sword, "Jock, there's a big snake in the plane", burning shoe in Temple of Doom, etc).

Not sure how to really put it but Pratt in that role feels like Poe Dameron interfacing with Hux in the Last Jedi. Too big an attempt at humor for an action/adventure film.

This is who I think could immerse themselves in the role and pull it off.

I hope it's set in the late '60's and features an aging cantankerous Indy clashing with the dirty smelly hippies infesting the campus.

Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones. This thread is about Indianda Jones, a totally different character.

Okay.

Since Mangold directed the good Wolverine movies, maybe he can get Hugh Jackman to put on the fedora?

not necessarily just in school, I mean that I found Harrison believable when solving puzzles, or deducing where to go , or talking about the lore of the items.
Chris Pratt is a lovable dummy to me.
