Been sitting on this for quite some time, and I'm stoked to finally be able to share the news publicly. It's been a herculean effort on the part of our company and the producers we've teamed with that began over two years ago just to get to this point, and never in a million years would I have expected our first ever purchase to see these kinds of results. To have Ava involved is an absolute dream come true and I can't wait for you guys to see what this amazing team is cooking up. There's still a long road ahead, and nothing is ever set in stone until the cameras are actually rolling, but just know that the aim is nothing short of a truly groundbreaking series, from the works of one of the most revered sci-fi authors of the past 40 years.

I've been in LA a long time, busting my ass for years, and even though we're not quite *there* yet, today is certainly a memorable milestone. To finally see a press release like this - with this kind of pedigree attached - makes the journey all the more real, and serves as a reminder that we're well on our way to achieving what we set out to do over two years ago. Hopefully at some point in the relatively near future this becomes old hat, but for now I'm going to soak it in and then get back to work.

Because this is only the beginning.

I've only talked to her a couple times, actually, and it's been a few months since the last time. My initial duties were basically done a while back, and I won't really be involved again until the script is complete and there's a draft to give notes on. It's essentially in the hands of the full-time producers and creatives at this point. We've got a couple other projects coming down the pike soon that are more tried-and-true O&C projects and we'll be far more creatively involved with those. But when it's your first project and you've got someone like Ava onboard, you basically clear the paint and get the hell out of the way.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Haven't you taken any notes from Kathleen Kennedy? You should have Ron Howard on speed-dial by now.

(Kidding of course [and I'm pro-Kathleen Kennedy])

I started listening to this on Audible last week, am 3/4 of the way through Dawn, and am really looking forward to it coming to the screen.

But, I'm not sure if I'm more excited for the TV show or for the epic meltdown TexAgs will have when it comes to some of the main themes of the story. The reactions to interspecies lovin' and portrayals of strong women come to mind.

Hmm... tough to say. TexAgs has determined that it is ok to have sex with the aliens from Avatar (if you are also an alien though) and a cartoon lion. We draw the line at fish men though. We'll continue to discuss and deliver some solid crowdsourced information for TC and his crew.

Strong women though? You can just get the hell out of here with that hippie *****

Ha, love it, SP.

As for the "interspecies lovin,'" I'm not too worried. It's one of the reasons I just can't bring myself to see The Shape of Water, and while I probably shouldn't judge until I actually see that movie, what's going on in Dawn is something wholly different. Because the entire point is that it's supposed to be a disgusting, species altering act in the book/show, one the main character doesn't want to partake in.

For those not aware, "present day" in the plot of Dawn is 200 years from now. A nuclear war - whether man made or alien-made, we don't yet know - wiped out all of humanity, save for 50 people an alien species saved. These people, along with the alien race, live in a giant, Pandora-like spaceship floating above earth, and the aliens have kept the humans in cryosleep for that entire 200-year period. The book opens as they're awaking the very first one, our main character.

Basically, the aliens are dying and need to mate with humans to survive. There's something we possess that essentially gives them life/strength, and that's basically the crux of the book / likely the first season of the show... do the final 50 humans mate with the aliens to create a new species that will survive, or do the remaining 50 people simply die out and that's the end of the human race as we know it? The aliens are gracious enough to give them that choice, but not without a few strings attached.

Anyway, the humans break up into factions on the ship - in a very Lost-like manner - and the debate of that very question - do we mate with the aliens or not - is central to the plot. So it's not a promotion of that act in any, way, shape, or form. It's literally the crux of the show, the pros and cons of which are constantly debated and weighed by our main characters. And while I can't get into details, there's a lot more going on in the show that makes it more Lost-like than in just the way I mentioned above, with our own, unique spins and twists.

The only other thing I can say at this point is that we're very close to being able to announce the next phase of development, where it's going to be airing, etc. Still a lot of details to iron out, and talks to be had, but we're doing everything we can to ensure that 2018 is the year this show becomes a reality, and hopefully we can all be watching it at some point in 2019. Fingers crossed...

Really looking forward to it! I've grown up on enough Star Trek that the interspecies mating does not bother me. If they're sentient and consenting then have at it, IMO.

Really curious to see the design y'all end up on for the Oankali. Expecting some HR Giger influence.
TCTTS

That would be awesome, re: a potential Giger influence. But I imagine it's going to be a bit more original. Something hopefully we've never seen before, but just as creepy, potentially. Either way, that phase is still a bit down the road.

Glad you're reading/listening to the book, though, and the interest is always appreciated!

Watching Altered Carbon I couldn't help but think what a great Lilith Renee Elise Goldsberry would be..

(I'm onto book two, and ohh boy am I looking forward to the TexAgs reactions.)

That's a great call. Will add her to the list. It's crazy, we already have reps calling, trying to position their actresses.

And yeah, should this make it to air, at the very least it's going to make for one of the most... interesting... threads in Entertainment board history, that's for sure. That said, we've got a bunch of other stuff in development that is very much in the TexAgs wheelhouse and will equal things out, hopefully...

If she gets cast, should I reach out to her and let her know I'm her agent now? Or, would you rather just list me as an Assistant Casting Director in the credits?

should make it so a product of a male alien and female human can't mate with a male human female alien. you are breeding 2 new species not one.

But Humans are.

so either you have a hybrid of human male/ alien that is different than human female/ alien

or the 50 human are all female ( or at least MOST of them) because you can procreate a species faster if you have more of the species that carries the baby to term. I could repopulate the species with 49 women pretty fast.

I haven't read the book, but I'm curious, is there some explanation of the ability of humans to mate with aliens? I guess what I'm getting at is that much in the same way a dog can't mate with a cat to create a dat or cog, there is no scientific reason I can see that beings that evolved independently on separate planets or even galaxies would ever be able to mate successfully.

I'm not one of those guys who can't enjoy a movie that may have a deeper scientific plot hole... I definitely can, and do. Suspension of disbelief is fine, but I'm mostly intrigued to see if someone has come up with a reasonable rationale for something like this (or maybe it's just a neat, thought-provoking premise, which I'm cool with too).

Just finished with the series. I really enjoyed it - particularly how much it had me thinking. I read a lot of science-fiction and this was not like any other sci-fis I have read. The closest might be Ursula Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness, but this really hits the mark on some difficult themes in a such a human way.

I'd love to chat more about this, but I'm not sure I have all my thoughts sorted (of figured) out, much less the writing proficiency to properly express them. Regardless, it'd take me more time than I have now to put those thoughts into coherent words. All that to say: this was not an easy read, but a rewarding one, and a book series I'd highly recommend.

Looking forward to seeing it play out on screen.

Great to hear. Yeah, it's a challenging read for sure (one I haven't even completely finished yet), but glad to hear that it was a rewarding one for you.

I think I mentioned this in another thread, but Ava and Vic (the writer) are finally pitching to networks/studios likely within the next month or so, before each officially start their next jobs. Nearly every major cable and streaming provider has expressed interest, and pitches will be made to all of them. So, hopefully we'll finally have a home for the show this summer, possibly be in production at some point next year, and then on air in 2020 or so. Fingers crossed.

Honestly, not really. If I was more of a veteran and more hands on creatively, I would likely have a stronger opinion, but simply getting something produced is such a big deal and a game changer for a company like ours that I truly don't care where it lands. We just need to get it made and that will then open so many more doors and afford us so many more opportunities that we can then start being picky about stuff like that with our other projects after.
