I mean, we all pretty much figured he was alive. Who knows, this could be some kind of HBO diversion, but I doubt it. It might be best to forewarn about this, though. Some dude earlier in the thread got upset about the two week old ending of GoT, so he'll probably blow a gasket at this.

I could be completely wrong but I'm still doubting the whole bean bag thing. I think they meant to kill him and he survived by wearing a vest.

Do they still use rock salt for non lethals in shotguns? The bird mask guy is driving an old Caddy, he may still use the old school stuff (it makes me think of the Bond movie with Christopher Walken as the bad guy for some reason)

I guess it's a good thing he's not dead since he's carrying the acting on this show

The question becomes what gets the Raven out of the house? Neighbors hear the gunfire, idk...

Otherwise the Raven has a body to get rid of, or if CF is wearing a vest finish the job.

I was wondering the same. Maybe he shoots the would-be killer himself.

Not in the head, I hope. Don't want to ruin the cool mask.

I thought the pan out into the driveway after the shooting sort of implied that the sound proof walls meant no one could hear anything, but who knows at this point

The guy who shot Velcoro was wearing the bird mask. The bird mask was last seen in the caddy next to Caspere's dead body. If Velcoro set up the assassination in front of the camera to fool someone, he would necessarily have to know the dude in the bird mask that was originally transporting Caspere. So who would he be trying to fool in the video?

And there's no way he's not dead if the bird man intended to kill him considering that he's not dead in that spoiler still.

Much more likely: the guy who killed Caspere was trying to send a message to the police without actually murdering a member of the investigation team, probably because of the heat that would bring down on the investigation itself.

The only person I could understand him trying to fool would be Bezzerides. She seemed to kind of be on to something being fishy with how the Vinci Judge (or whoever that guy they met with in his office) would ignore her questions and his assistant would answer for him. Then when she asked Velcoro how compromised he was when she dropped him off at his house.

But then there would obviously be a lot to go back and touch on by the show as to the whole set up of that situation.

I think you're right though that Caspere's killer was more trying to send a message without trying to kill the City of Vinci's inside man.

I don't think VV or Velcoro were in on the assault. VV's only chance at getting his "off the books" money back is through Velcoro solving the Caspare murder first, away from the other 2 cops. It was also either coincidental or staged by Birdman that Velcoro was in front of the camera when he was shot. I don't think he was "acting" when he discovered all the creepy crap in the house.

No explanation for the non-lethal message, though. If it was in line with the Catalyst guy's "we're not gangsters" statement, then the killing of Caspare doesn't make sense. I'm sure we are too early to know all of the various underworld players involved in the rail corruption.

Didn't VV mention that he "broke the union" for the mayor on some earlier project? Could be some retribution for that by killing VV's bagman, stealing his dirty money, and warning off the cop he has in his pocket, as well as intimidation / leverage to make sure they get the sweetheart labor contracts for the rail construction. As Thornton Mellon said, "I don't know if you know who runs those unions, but it's not the boy scouts."

Based on all we know so far, it is pretty easy to conclude that the Birdman works for Marty's creepy father-in-law or the Yellow King, who is still alive.

Interesting that you used the term overthink. The word has 9 letters. 9 is obviously a very important number with great symbolism. We saw Ani already at a casino playing cards. If you play cards(or Call of Duty: World At War), you may know that the 9 of diamonds is referred to as the Curse of Scotland, or the Death card.

The Curse of Scotland is thought to be a reference to the Glen Coe Massacre, which was a a slaughter of the highlanders for supporting the Jacobite Uprising, and refusing to pledge allegiance to King William.

The hills outside of Monterey on this proposed rail line could be looked at as the "highlands" to the valley and LA county. We know that Semyon and his crew want to secure land deals in this area.

We all know Semyon is played by VV. Well, what is an upside down v with another v below it? You guessed it!

A DIAMOND.

I rest my case.

My guess is Ray called it in before he investigated the house and somebody comes running in before the guy can finish the job.

Or the shooter thinks he is dead and leaves.

I mean, it isn't like last year they didn't have a "he should be dead" moment.

It really bothers me that VV had to scrape, liquidate, and double mortgage everything to come up with $5million. It seems a guy like him should have that laying around and $5million more ready to liquidate. He is broke. Seems he's a chump for jumping on this opportunity just to get ahead, or where he thinks he ought to be.

Honestly it seems to me like you think dirty mob bosses have more capital on hand than they really do. A mob guy as big as Gotti was worth maybe 10 million at most, and that's not nearly close to what he could have actually liquidated at any time.

Not just capital on hand, but access to more. VV is all alone? No backers? Every body has someone to answer to and borrow from. But not in this story. VV used all of his own money? He's broke now?

Completely different era. Even Gotti is a different era but at least he's closer to the "modern era" of organized crime.

My point is that Semyon is not some massive regional godfather. Hes a corrupt businessman in a corrupt suburb of LA. I think it's completely appropriate that he wouldn't have $5million cash on hand. That doesn't happen these days.

It's a deal that will involve the state and federal government due to grants that are expected to be issued from purchases along the corridor. I highly doubt he's able to just call in every illegal entity he knows to make up the cash.

Again, it's just my opinion that you may be putting VV's character up into an echelon of status that he isn't in. Hes a corrupt businessman who wreaks havoc in a corrupt and industrial suburb. That doesn't exactly scream "multi multi millionaire"

Oh I know. I just like the legends about Lansky and how much money he might have had.
