I know its unfair to compare this season to the last, but I don't think its doing itself any favors by repeating the same style of introduction. If they wanted a new show, I think they should've tried to do a new opening credit. Another disappointing thing, unrelated to the plot, was the music for me. I think they're going for a "geographical" sound by switching up to more "industry" noise than the first season, but that's just me.

For hour long shows, I feel as though there are two ways of watching them, either being enthralled and losing track of an hour or waiting for the hour to hurry up because the pacing is awkward. I definitely felt this first episode was the latter. The pacing was entirely too slow with the high points being Colin Ferrel's violence laden moments.

I hope this show picks up as I plan on watching it to its entirety, but it is concerning after hearing most of the TV reviewers panning the first three episodes they received.

I feel the same way. I thought it was very solid. But I am not super picky and knew this wasn't an extension on Season 1. I am glad I am relatively easy to please. Would kind of suck to be so critical that you can hardly enjoy anything.

Not really seeing any big twists regarding Vince Vaughn's character and the rape... didn't seem like it was the style of S1 to have big story-telling twists or reveals like that, it was all very methodical.

There were so many imagined twists and subplots in season one from this board that never were realized that I'm just gonna take this show as it comes. But it is fun reading the stuff you guys come up with!

Agreed. That's where I'm at too.

That grantland piece about ferrell was spot on though. He was amazing and that character has no redeeming qualities. Unlike MMs who actually has some charisma and charm when he wanted to. This is dirtier and grittier for all parties involved. There is no woody to walk in and lighten up the mood.

He was probably just alluding to the fact that all the crazy drawings Woody's daughter drew in Season 1, people started obsessing over them and trying to assign meanings to them that didn't exist. He's saying the same thing will happen this season with the milk-girl-thing.

Personally, if there is a clue to start obsessing over this early, I think its the very opening scene where there are hundreds of markers in a field and you briefly see a "contaminated" sign flash by. Anyone know what that's about? I assume it relates to the railway land Vaughn wants to develop?

Caught up last night on the DVR after missing it due to the US Open.

I thought it was a good first episode and liked seeing everyone's vices right off the bat.

This season has more of straight forward 'who dun it' feel as opposed to last season when we got more of a 'why is the world this way' feel.

I really like Vince Vaughn as a smart, calculated organized crime boss. He pulls it off very well and I think the dynamic between him and Velcoro is going to be great. Velcoro is the off the rails, loose cannon while Semyon is the calculated manipulator. The scene in the bar where Semyon tells him 'You're supposed to savor that' illustrated this exceptionally well.

As far the occult stuff I think we may get a bit of it. Wasn't there some kind of magic book with fold out pages found at the home of the city manager? I remember seeing a red book with fold out pages that had some weird symbols of the front cover and thought that's where it was found.

Couple things I found off a bit...

  • I don't think Woodrugh would be able to stop a bike going 100+ mph like he did. That just didn't seem feasible.
  • At the end Bezzeride's partner asks Velcoro "What's Vinci?". As a deputy for the county Vinci is in how would he not know that? Seemed misplaced.

When I first saw this posted, I thought it was going to be a reference to the 4 standing in a circle around the dead guy on the bench at the very end of ep one....Doesn't look exactly like that scene, but surprised no one made the connection considering the many even crazier assumptions/reaches that are made

Vinci is set in LA County. One of the countless little municipalities that calls itself its own city, but it's really all just LA.

This is why when asked what Vinci is, Velcoro says "a city, or it's supposed to be" or something like that. Basically acknowledging that it's just an arbitrarily carved out piece of urban sprawl.

I believe the city is based off Vernon, California.

If you look at it on a map and how many there are, I could maybe see some guy from a different county not knowing if he doesn't spend much time in LA County.

Hell I'm sure there are little municipalities that surround DFW and Houston that I've never heard of, and I've been to both areas countless times for years, just never lived in either hub. Who knows.

Maybe not the same county but I found it odd still. Vinci doesn't come off as a small town that's out on the sticks that no one's heard of. It came off as an industrial hub of pretty good size. Big enough that a deputy would know what it is.

Wasn't Bezzerides there gambling? I got the sense it couldn't be too far.

Means nothing just something that I heard that stood out to me.

Exactly. There was a wide/establishing shot of Vinci early on and I was actually surprised by how close they had it to downtown LA. You could clearly make out downtown LA in the background just a few miles away. That said, a cop asking "What's Vinvci?" was pretty stupid. I couldn't tell you where half of the little towns around here really are, but there sure as hell isn't one I haven't heard of, especially that close to LA.

In some of the long shots, Vinci is clearly not far from downtown LA, so presumably LA County, not Ventura County. Just looked up Vinci to confirm its a made up city, and saw some article saying that Vinci is based on Vernon, CA which google maps tells me is due south of downtown LA. Which makes sense why the other cops were waiting on him to get to the scene. Besides being drunk at a bar, he also was coming from far away.

Vernon is also no where near Sherman Oaks, supporting the idea that it would be pretty easy for him to assault the kid's dad and get away with it.

Edit: And I see now that everything I said was already answered while I was typing/researching.

Good point, about Ani gambling at the casino though.

Vernon is a good example. Nobody knows where that is....it's a "city" 5 miles south of downtown LA....it is mostly industrial and has a population of 112.....yep 112 people. Completely surrounded by LA.

Locally in DFW there are similar places...almost nobody knows what the heck Pantego or Dalworthington Gardens are...small cities completely within the city of Arlington. They are a little bigger with populations of 2K each, mostly bedroom communities. they each have their own police and fire departments.

that close to LA ...maybe...but it is FICTION....and that motorcycle dude was apparently ex military and NOT local I imagine...there are literlly hundreds of cities in the LA metro area....most people know...LA, BH, Anaheim, Pasdena and Burbank.

I'm pretty sure Colin Farrell identified himself as a cop to the bully's dad and it wouldn't take long to make the connection after talking to the bully.

By plunge into darkness I did not necessarily mean the story but the characters. Last season there was a slow reveal on how messed up Harrellson and McConaughey were. We established pretty darn fast this season that all the cops are messed up big time.

Agreed. The question was included in the script solely to allow him to make the smart-aleck comment (and I paraphrase) "It is supposedly a city."

It's going to be a bit more important than that, IMO. It was definitely a piece of witty dialogue, but I don't think they wrote that in just to get a comment in. I think it helps apply context to where the focus of the show will be. Again, it's based off Vernon, CA.

The City Manager of Vinci is now dead, was a weird freak, and the investigation will no doubt look into this concrete town of Vinci, and the webs of corruption that control it.

Yes, and multiple times during the episode, you saw quick scenes scanning seemingly the same smokestacks and industrial machinery. They are essentially making the town of Vinci a character.

Do made up cities and counties in shows/movies bother anyone else? Heck, I'm even bothered by learning the real film location of a show/movie that I love isn't where it is supposed to be on TV.

I get the business of why it is that way, but still kind of bugs me.....the made up city/county thing though I never see the upside of.

I'd just say to use the real Vernon then...think how much it would have sucked if BB was set in a fictional town based off of ABQ, versus just using the real city. TD season 1 also used real towns/counties exclusively I believe.

Not a huge deal, mind you, but real places are always better IMO

Drugs are an issue all over the country. Is there a backstory or history of a real life guy from ABQ that Walter White is based off of? Not exactly the best comparison. BB didn't have a need to change the name of the town.

I think the idea, again, is to use real history and background to help present a story of fiction. Due to the very recent corruption issues in Vernon, I'm assuming it's just a nod to use that as framework for the story without causing unnecessary confusion or backlash to Vernon itself. Vernon isn't LA, Chicago, or New York City, etc. The smaller the town, the less likely a show is going to feel comfortable using a real name if they're going to be bringing up death, corruption, organized crime, etc. that is specifically related to the town government.
