I would watch it for George Strait, Alan Jackson and Taylor Swift's mother. Ah and Dierks if you're a fan of his.

It was a good time. Miranda Lambert finally lost weight and looks hot so that was a plus during her song but I will never be a fan of hers for whatever reason.

I thought Brad's new song sucked and didn't care for Garth's either.

70,000 people at an awards show is a spectacle in itself.

The Ticket poked some fun at the CMA this morning, esp Shelton and Bryan, as well as Swift.

The Hardline (afternoons on The Ticket) doubled down on anything the Musers (mornings) did. I was pretty damn funny.

Yeah i try to not listen to The Ticket, but when you hear them damn near castigate Luke Bryan and Shelton. . Oh man, too funny.

I havent heard more than a few good country songs in years. The songwriters bailed when the companies decided to promote looks over substance. It wont recover.

The songwriters bailed when they couldn't make a living writing songs anymore. There's very, very few left, especially when you compare it to the heyday in the 90s. At that time, there were over 30 labels in Nashville and around 4,000 songwriters signed to publishing deals. Now, there's a handful of labels and less than 300 signed writers.

I've been saying for years that if songwriters can't make a living, they won't keep doing it. For years, I've been told I was wrong because "writers gotta write". Well, here we are. You have a bunch of half-asses regurgitating the same stuff over and over because they're not talented enough to think up something fresh, and even if they were, they never had the training (dues paying) that writers had to go through in the past.

Also, and this is important: when the bottom fell out of the music industry over a decade ago, the labels started signing artists to what are called "360 deals", which means the label participates in ALL the artist's income (touring, sales, t-shirts, and songwriting royalties). Artists who sign deals now are, for all intents and purposes, required to write their own songs, whether they can actually write or not. They're penalized for cutting "outside" songs by having to take a lower royalty percentage if they don't hit certain benchmarks on the number of songs on their album that they wrote.

In the old days when I got to Nashville, your publisher was the filter you had to get a song through first, and it was brutal. My first publisher once told me "If you can't write any better than this sh*t, take your ass back to Texas." You HAD to write good songs, or you didn't last long. Now, most of the writers who have publishing deals are either signed to a record label, or have prospects of that happening. None of the publishers now want to risk telling a young writer/artist that their song isn't good enough - if they wind up being wrong, it could cost them their job. So they now are strictly rah-rah types - "oh, great song, man! I love that!", regardless of how mediocre the song may be. And because these kids have never had their egos b*tch slapped, they think they truly know what they're doing and they become almost impossible to work with and reign in.

I've just about given up on writing for the radio market anymore, I can't bring myself down to that level. I pretty much write for the bluegrass/Americana markets now - a lot less $$$, but at least you can still get a good song through the machine.

Sorry for the long rant....I hate what's become of my profession and the town I've invested so much of my life to.

Rbtexan, you should break into the folk metal scene.

why say it in 2 sentences when you can say it in 4 paragraphs?

I feel like there is a slow simmering backlash against the current "country" music that will eventually turn the tide away from the "bro" stuff. I've seen articles here and there railing against it, and I think (hope) that will pick up steam.

The more and more insiders like RB above that speak out the better. And I find what they have to say interesting as well.

I honestly don't mind the bro country if it's done well and doesn't call itself country.

I'm with df here. When we're having a nice thread where everyone speculates about why country music sucks these days, there is no place for some guy who is in the business who has first hand in depth knowledge to come in here and get his insightful, helpful, and genuinely interesting perspective all over our nonsense. Eff that guy.

The Awards Show was the first time I had seen or heard of Sam Hunt. I was shocked that he wasn't a guest pop star that stopped in ala Nick Jonas or Kelli Clarkson. He's not even a little bit country.

Attention spans are becoming incredibly short and people see a longish post and just auto skip it. Kind of sad.

So you must be a song writer in Nashville with some inside perspective too, right?

I assume the 6 songs at once mashup has been posted on this thread but if it hasn't it truly is kind of mind blowing. These songs perfectly match up and they were all recent hits. What a formula:

Brantley Gilbert releases this "country" song. I never thought it was possible to cram so much cliche and garbage into one song.

"Same Old Song" Lyrics:
I hear there's folks
Tired of us talking about dirt roads
Tailgates, tan lines and corn rows
It sounds made up but that's the life I know
We know all about some moonshine
Moonlight, bonfires
Seein' all the stars on a summer night
Don't see how that's gettin' old

[CHORUS] Ride with us on Friday night
See if we ain't jacked em up
See if we ain't settin' it on fire
See if we don't burn it up
See if we ain't crankin' Hank
Sippin' on a little somethin' strong
Hey man, you'll see why we can't
Quit singin' that same old song
The same old song

You heard enough about red dirt
Blue collar dollars and hard work
5:00 heading to the outskirts
3 chords and the truth
Tired of hearin' 'bout them tan legs
Bare feet on the dash, sundress
Daisy dukes, boots and ray-bans
You ain't even seen them move

Hang loose on Friday night
Man ain't they lookin' tough?
See if they ain't blowin' your mind
See if you don't fall in love
Let her find that country station
Then watch her sing along
Hey man you'll see why we can't
Quit singin' that same old song,
That same old song,
That same old song,

Just when you think
You've heard it all about a small town
All that small talk goin' round
That ain't all we're all about

Sit with us on Sunday mornin'
Bow your head and let us pray
Close your eyes and let the Lord in
Tell me you don't feel a thing
When we sing Amazing Grace
C'mon, man, sing along
You 'bout to see why we can't
Quit singin' that same old

[CHORUS]

I've become convinced that what we call country these days should be re-named "white trash" and or "trailer park". Not country.

Apparently he won last year. He sang some terrible song with his perfectly feathered hair. Has he reached any fame or is just another dud like seemingly the rest of these contest winners are?

A song about songs about country livin'. Can't wait for The Hardline on The Ticket to give their take on this one.
