Brief bit about Andor from Stellen Skarsgard while discussing his new indie project Dune 2
So, after discussing Dune: Part Two for several minutes, io9 brought up our adoration for Andor and Skarsgrd smiled brightly. He, of course, can't say much if anything about what's coming in 2025but he did tell us this when asked how he felt about where his character ended up. "I'm satisfied where it goes, yeah," he said. "It's such good writing and it's Tony Gilroy, I really like to say his lines."
While the return of Andor was originally planned for August 2024, the writers' and actors' strikes changed that. Production was forced to shut down for months as everyone waited for the studios to make a fair deal. Which, eventually, they did. But as a result, the show finished filming much later than planned, and though it'll likely be completed later this year, with two other Star Wars shows also on deck, we'll have to wait just a little longer to watch it.
But, Luthan Rael would surely tell us that good things come to those who wait, and it sounds like Skarsgard and Gilroy certainly have that.

I suppose I shouldn't have any expectations for Skeleton Crew, since it has almost nothing out there about it. I don't expect much from the Acolyte, though.
I still don't understand how the strike affected the season that drastically. From the sound of it, something like 85% (if not more) of the season was shot by the time the actors' strike hit in July. Because when they came back late last year/earlier this year they only had a few weeks left, and now filming is either done or days away from wrapping up.
So, seeing as the directors, editors, effects artists, etc were never on strike, why couldn't they finish the first eight or however many episodes they had shot, save for last-minute ADR? And then only have three or four episodes left to complete by this coming fall? Because so many other productions did just that. The Gladiator sequel, for instance, was halfway done filming when the actors' strike hit, so Ridley Scott took that time to edit/complete the first half of the movie.
Maybe there's something about the Andor post-production flow that requires all episodes to go through post in conveyor belt fashion, at roughly the same time, who knows...

Honestly, knock on wood, but I think both are going to be better than any Star Wars season we've had so far, outside of Andor. The buzz for The Acolyte is slowly starting to hum behind-the-scenes, from people who have seen early cuts of the first few episodes, finally hinting at something truly different/unique/awesome. And then Skeleton Crew too has an insane stable of filmmakers behind it, to the point where I just can't see that level of talent screwing it up. If anything, the bootleg trailers for both, from Celebration last year, looked incredible and were enough to get me excited right there. Hopefully the delays are more strike-related than anything else.
My one trepidation with Skeleton Crew is that there's a bunch of child actors in this one right? That never seems to yield itself to great drama imo.
Yeah, it focuses mainly on a group of kids, and they look to be maybe a year or two younger than the Stranger Things kids in season one. So closer to tweens as opposed to little kids. But the adult cast is really good, and the whole thing feels like an old school Amblin movie, with heavy suburbia/E.T. vibes, set in the Star Wars universe. The sets/cinematography are incredible, and it just looks unlike anything we've seen before in that world. It's less annoying modern day kids show and more classic '80s adventure, with that whimsical Spielberg vibe.
Ah, okay, I was thinking like Jedi youngling ages. Hope they nail the feel you're talking up here.
I mentioned this a while back, but there's a grainy establishing shot in the bootleg trailer - it's hard to make out - but it's a quick shot of a neighborhood at night, with trees and hills in the background, and then streets, streetlights, sidewalks, and houses in the foreground. It looks exactly like it could be an establishing shot from, say, the Oregon neighborhood in The Goonies, except there's a hover car with headlights coming down the street toward us, and the homes all have a distinct Star Wars feel. But that regular people/regular neighborhood vibe is so distinct throughout the trailer, with the kids opening their garage door at one point looking for something, sitting in a normal-looking classroom at school, running through a local forest at night with flashlights, etc.
It just excites me that it's a part of the Star Wars galaxy we've never seen before, one that looks and feels more like our own. As if all they've let us see up to this point are military installations, remote desert villages, and the aristocracy. Now we're finally getting to see the normies and their families, who look and feel a lot like us.
The plot seems very Goonies-eque as well, as the kids get swept up in some kind of off-planet adventure, with Jude Law as their guide, while their parents seemingly try to put together the pieces and track them down? Something along those lines. All the while, there's plenty more traditional-looking Star Wars stuff sprinkled in as well.
And the whole thing is from Jon Watts, who directed the last three Spider-Man movies, with some other really interesting/big-name directors tackling some episodes as well.
Anyway, I'm rambling at this point, but just trying to say that we might very well be in for a pleasant surprised by this one, as they're making an effort to do something different, with some real talent/passion behind the camera, and what looks to be the highest quality in front of it. The budget/scope/cinematography definitely feels more Andor than the other stuff, that's for sure.

Skeleton Crew feels like an attempt to get the young people invested in the Wars again. Everybody at my kids' middle school loves Stranger Things.
My pal at ILM didn't work on Skeleton Crew but says the fight sequences in The Acolyte are the best combo of stunts/sabers since the Theed Generator.

I'm in on this if this is the background. I appreciate that they went with an age that should avoid scenes of borderline, immobile 5 yr old girls being able to out run an adult Jedi Master.

I got to Zoom with an ILM FX guy thanks to my brother contacting Disney after my car accident in 2016. the ILM guy had also been in a traumatic wreck earlier in this life that left his face badly scarred. Despite it being a 1 time thing he has continued to stay in touch with me from time to time, despite my constant gnawing obsession with asking for spoilers on literally anything.
