I liked the crystal foxes and the porgs.

It's crazy to me that Disney sat by and watched Rian write so many of what Kevin Smith called "FU JJ" moments. End of TFA, Phasma, Kylo mask, Snoke, Rey parentage... all inconsequential. I don't mind it though.

Took the missus to see it for her first time on Saturday. She absolutely loved it and I think I loved it even more the second time. After reading through these threads for the past couple of weeks, I was starting to doubt my opinion of the film, but this second viewing told me that I was completely spot on and this is an awesome movie.

So many great moments I took away from it:

- Luke's monologue with Rey about the Jedi and their hubris and how people had made them into deities and legends even though they were flawed. Then pointing out how he had become a legend. So many parallels with how people have looked at Luke's character and criticize the movie's portrayal of him.

- Yoda's comments to Luke about "teach what you have learned" not just the good things but also the flaws, the failures, and other negatives. Examples again that Luke was flawed and had failed.

- Kylo Ren telling Rey about her parents - I think Rian left this open to interpretation. In one of their earlier "force chats" Kylo had put the notion out there that she was a nobody and her parents were nobodies. When he forces her to say it, I think she's just going off of what he said earlier and says "they were nobodies" and then he puts it out there that they were common smugglers who sold her for drinking money and they now are in an unmarked pauper's grave on Jakku. He's all about "forget the past...kill it if you have to". Very convenient for Kylo and impossible to prove since they're in un-marked graves. I think the door is still open for JJ to make something about her parents.

- Leia's Star Lord moment - while this is still a bit of a weird scene for me, I have seen many complaints that she opened the door to a vacuum. It was clear that she entered an air lock and then opened that exterior door as the air lock was pressurized.

- Haldo's lightspeed jump through the New Order fleet - clearly one of the most awesome moments in the film. They way they portrayed it from the perspective of Poe and Leia, I think Haldo was doing something never really attempted before. They didn't understand what she was doing until after it happened. That's how I took it anyway.

There are more that will probably come to me, should have written these down Saturday when it was fresh in my mind.


As for someone in my circle that has a negative opinion of the film:

My manager - he's very critical on movies and feels character development and good story are much more important than CGI, etc. He came back from seeing the movie and said it was ok, 7/10. Coming from him, I thought that was pretty good. But.....then he went and started reading all the negative RT comments.....now he thinks it's the worst Star Wars ever and he's parroting all the same negative comments you can read here or on RT.

Ah, another item I remembered:

This whole notion that the Canto Bight scene and the Finn/Rose sub-plot was pointless and went nowhere.

Sure, in hind-sight you can claim that, but as you're watching the film there's a definite point to that sub-plot and it is going somewhere. If you don't like it, that's fine, but it's asinine to claim it's pointless. The point to me was that sometimes these harebrained schemes don't always work and sometimes you fail. They came up with the plan to go find the code-breaker so that they could sneak aboard the star destroyer and destroy the dedicated power breaker (not the tracker itself) so that the tracker would be disabled and the fleet could escape through hyperspace. This tracker was established in Rogue One so it's not something Rian made up.

my problem with Haldo, is that she apparently told no one about any of her plans (except for the peons that she had fueling the escape pods).

Not a single person on the bridge knew WTF was going on. If she had shared her escape plan with anyone on the bridge, there wouldn't have been the need for the casino story, there wouldn't have been a mutiny, and all of the escape pods would've probably gotten away.

I feel like the whole Haldo/Poe thing was set up to put Poe in "his place" at the expense of wasting 1/3 of the movie on stuff that was pointless and cost numerous lives. Poe gets chastised for all the lives lost taking out the Dreadnaught, while Haldo causes many more through her stubborn secrecy.

The only person we know for sure who was in a leadership position who was not told of Haldo's plans was Poe. It was clear when watching the film that she didn't trust Poe. In their first conversation, she establishes that Leia had demoted him to Captain and that she had dealt with many flyboys like him who just want to blow stuff up and in this situation he should just sit down and stay out of the way. I had no problem with her taking that position with him. She had no reason to share her plans with the rank and file (possibly because she knew it might not work), but I'm sure there were people in leadership on the ship who knew her plans.

Also, this complaint about her not sharing her plans goes both ways. Poe/Finn/Rose could have gone to her with their harebrained scheme and then she may have told them her plans and kept them from going. But C3PO says that Haldo would never go along with their plan so Poe says "need to know....and she doesn't need to know".

while I think it could\should have been more clear, I think Haldo was withholding info because they didn't know how they were being tracked and thought they could have a FO informant on board. In which case, trust no one.

and the FO only learned about the plan when Poe told Finn and Rose and they were talking about it in front of stuttering hacker guy. So had Poe followed orders, the plan would have worked and the resistance could have escaped undetected (even though Snoke could see them physically through his space telescope screen thing lol).

Chopped the data at day 134 since all movies were at just about their final domestic gross at this point. (Except for Titanic, which still grossed another $30M+.)

What's crazy to me is that TFA was already at $750M at this same point.

I doubt any movie will ever come close to breaking its record, at least not for another decade.

I watched Star Wars two nights ago and had a thought. When Vader strikes down Obi-wan, does he really strike him down or does Obi-wan just become one with the force?

We see Obi-wan's cloak fall to the ground the same as we see Luke's cloak fall to the ground after he become one with the force.

Just an observation I had in all of this talk of Rian Johnson completely disregarding the OT. Maybe he always viewed that scene with Vader and Obi-wan as Obi-wan becoming one with the force rather than being struck down. Maybe he also interpreted Yoda doing the same. In this line of thinking, it makes complete sense for Luke to go out as the other great jedi masters.

It's fun to go back and watch the OT, and eventually the PT, after watching TFA and TLJ. It was really cool to hear Obi-wan explain the force to Luke and then remember how Luke explained it to Rey. Also very cool to hear Obi-wan tell Luke to reach out with his feelings when he puts on the helmet and then get almost the exact same line when Luke tells Rey to reach out.

I'm going to watch ESB either tonight or tomorrow night. Will be cool to see how ESB and TLJ are connected. I think they are more connected than people are willing to give due credit.

I think it's safe to say that in 1977 Vader hit Obi-Wan with the lightsaber and killed him. It probably wasn't the best idea to have someone's head go rolling off in a space fantasy back then. I also think it's clear Yoda stopped breathing and passed away before fading. What happened to Luke is unprecedented, as far as I know.

TLJ just overtook both The Dark Knight and Rogue One to take the #6 spot on the all-time domestic list.

It's actually kind of crazy that Rogue One was that high on the list to begin with.
