I don't think it happened *in* that movie, but from the beginning of the marketing to the end of TFA, it distinctly felt like we had been somewhat duped. Mainly, like Quad Dog said, by all the trailer and commercial shots of Boyega with a light saber never really amounting to anything, etc.

EDIT: I read that as TFA, not TLJ. My bad.

Did Boyega really get pushed to the side in TLJ? He was on the screen a ton in that film.

He was a bit of a passenger, though he was the focus of the "join or don't join" arc, Rose drove most of the actions of that group.

His first appearance in TLJ was for comedic relief in that leaking healing suit. His arc in TLJ was on if he should join the resistance or not, which was pretty much his arc from TFA. His character hadn't grown at all.

I remember reading at one point how Finn was going to lead a brigade of defecting storm troopers against the first order. I think an awesome character arc for Finn would have been him discovering his force sensitivities to inspire and lead a group of people. Similar to how Leia did in the senate.

Unfortunately, they abandoned that almost completely - Finn relegated to the sidelines of riding a space horse along the hull of a star destroyer while shouting at Rose.

Funny how leading a cavalry charge on the hull of a Star Destroyer sounds pretty bad ass outside of context.

Meanwhile he's in about 5 seconds of the TLJ trailer and relegated to the bottom of the poster. He's featured more in the RoS trailer though.

To be honest, he was probably my least favorite main/big character of the new trilogy.

If Disney told him he was going to be a bigger part of the movies compared to what he ended up with, sure, he can be upset, but blame it on the writers not knowing what to do with his character, not his skin color.

Dude got to be in Star Wars. Hard to feel sorry for him.

My dad was largely out of town that summer, so my mom trying to be a cool mom took 4 year old muck and 7 year old brother of muck to see it because Luke Skywalker was in it. She was not aware the female lead was a hooker who took her clothes off on screen.

What I keep taking away from his comment is not that he was pushed aside because of his race, but that Disney used his race to market the films, and THEN pushed him aside.

Those are two completely different complaints. On Disney's part, he's alleging tokenism, not outright discrimination.

How do we really know Disney's intention was to market TFA specifically capitalizing on Boyega's race?

Boyega is in fact black. Boyega was in fact in the film from start to finish and likely had nearly as much screen time as Ridley. The film is literally the story of:
  • Finn and Rey collide on Jakku being pursued by the First Order
  • They escape on the Falcon
  • They help Han and Chewie escape the space mafia guys
  • They go visit Maz.
  • Rey gets captured. Finn freaks out for REEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
  • They meet up on Starkiller and witness Han's murder
  • They both fight Kylo and get rescued by Chewie
  • Finn's in a coma, Rey goes off to meet Grump Pants

Finn is easily the second most involved character in the film. Of course he is going to be marketed heavily. And since he's black, well, yeah look a black guy prominently featured in the marketing.

There were even hints of romantic feelings.

Butt Finn was a crap character top to bottom. Not Boyega's fault. Is what it is. And RJ took TLJ in a completely different direction that had much less emphasis on that character. It's almost as if they even came up with the whole patently stupid casino planet/codebreaker side plot to give Finn's character something to do because it honestly added zero to the film.

I think Boyega's image was marketed relevant to role he played in TFA and simply lessened in the two subsequent films. So what?

I think Finn getting so much attention was more due to the following:

1. The fact thay Rey was in fact the Jedi that the trilogy would focus on was meant to be a surprise/twist. Marketing Finn as front and center was a clever fake-out.

2. The fact the new (seemingly) main character in Star Wars was black is something that the media played up more so than Lucasfilm themselves, and rightfully so. It was a pretty big deal. That doesn't mean Disney was trying to capitalize on his race. Matter of fact, I'm almost certain that they looked at all races for the role of Finn.

Another factor to consider is that Poe Dameron was supposed to die early in TFA, but Oscar Isaac's screen presence and lobbying for Poe to stay alive worked on JJ. If Poe is only a first-third of the movie guy, surely Finn gets more screen time in subsequent films.

Rian Johnson also said that the codebreaker side-quest was originally going to be Finn and Poe together, but he felt like all of the dialogue was just a "buddy cop" variety and neither of their characters was getting anywhere as a result so he split them up. I really blame RJ's story telling for Finn's demise - I don't think he fires a weapon at all in the entire second film. Meanwhile, in terms of action and time on screen, he should have been turning cartwheels in TROS - he's shown as a matured character in the opening heist, he's on screen constantly, and he has a huge action sequence at the end of the movie where his face is not behind a mask or in a space ship.

Plus if they ever do continue the sequels - he clearly was being set up as having latent Force sensitivity. That would suggest him being a viable candidate for a role in those films.

At the end of the day the guy can say anything he wants to, it's his life. But boo-hooing about being misled when you're in 3 of the top 25 grossing movies of all time is weak sauce. You want to gripe about something, gripe about Pacific Rim: Uprisig.

I'd assume the whole "that's not how the force works" thing was supposed to tie into that as well.

I think it's dumb that they left it without him telling her but on rewatch all the signs are there throughout

Finn's Force-enhanced intuition lets him know which command ship has taken control of the tower after they blow up the tower and he stops suddenly when he believes Rey to be dead after she defeats Palpatine. They are both tiny moments in huge multi-location action sequences, so they are easy to forget if you only saw the movie 1-2 times.

Bad move, imo.

Making it weekly was one of the best decisions they made for Season 1.

It benefited hugely from the buzz that the show (and Baby Yoda) generated week over week, and I'm sure the numbers reflected that. Plus, it's just cooler to be able to discuss each episode individually rather than a bunch (or a full season) at once.
