How are they going to fit the beasties in that tiny ship with the plexiglass tank?

Chris Nolan for Star Wars sounds good to me, but my snarky side wonders how he would work his favorite theme (time) into it.

They use space whales to go forward in time to San Francisco to save the whales.
Oh that would be great for popcorn while watching the inevitable fireworks over the raging debate on which franchise is superior.

All fair questions, and just posting this from a discussion perspective (not being argumentative).

I was referring to Rogue One not being a core film as it's a sort of side adventure that didn't really leverage many characters that we know for the majority of the film, but I get you there. It obviously covers a key event but it's a lot of detail around something that had just been previously mentioned in passing.

I think Star Wars is in a weird place right now with none of the main trilogy movies really hitting since TFA so it's hard to gauge where things may go from here. TFA did a good job integrating the old and new and I'm not sure what the best approach is for that moving forward.

Also, why isn't Gareth Edwards top of the list to do more Star Wars films?

Because Edwards didn't end up finishing Rogue One, Tony Gilroy did. Gilroy essentially had to save the movie from Edwards' incompetence. And now having seen each of their follow ups (Edwards' The Creator and Gilroy's Andor) it's even more obvious the impact Gilroy had. Edwards is amazing with blockbuster visuals, but I'm afraid the guy just doesn't know how to tell a good story.

Funny as he just addressed this recently (grain of salt etc.).

https://variety.com/2023/film/news/rogue-one-gareth-edwards-inaccurate-reports-reshoots-tony-gilroy-1235741792/

But I get what you mean having seen The Creator, he's not Snyder level look at the cool slomo but there's some shortcomings. That said, I loved Monsters and Godzilla was solid.

I get what he's saying, and don't doubt him at all, but even if Edwards was involved till the end, his movie still needed saving, and it was Gilroy who was essential in saving it. So I doubt Lucasfilm wants to risk reliving that headache again.

And yeah, I love Edwards' Godzilla more than most, but as good as it was, Aaron Taylor-Johnson played the most bland and boring lead ever, and killing Cranston halfway through was a boneheaded decision. A better director gives us a more interesting lead, and finds a way to keep Cranston - at the height of his powers/popularity - around for the entire movie. Make those two changes and that movie could have been an all-timer.

I liked the Creator. It's no Andor, but it's not terrible.

All good points. It will be interesting to see what Disney does. One thing we haven't talked about as a group and I am loathe to mention it for fear of where the discussion goes, but does Gen Z feel strongly about Star Wars, do they buy merch? How much of the issues is Disney trying to market to them?

Age range:

Gen Z ~12 to 27
Millennials ~ 28-43
Gen X ~44-59
Boomers Greater than 59

Gen Z is starting to enter prime buying power.

Ha, at least Tea Leoni was hot.

And don't get me wrong, I like Aaron Taylor-Johnson in general, I just think his character in Godzilla sucks. Imagine how much better that movie would be if he wasn't so dour, and instead had some charm or attitude or was even half as charismatic as, say, Will Smith in Independence Day. I'm not saying a ton of bravado or cheesy one-liners, but just some spark and a few quips here and there would have done wonders. Then have Cranston sacrifice himself in the end in some way (to finally be with his wife), instead of unceremoniously dying halfway through, and man, again... all-timer.

I thought everything else was incredible.

40-43 is NOT millennials... we're a transitional subgroup called Xennials ... I am 99% more aligned with GenX than those freak millennials

If true (and I trust Jeff, he's rock solid when it comes to scoops), as of now, it sounds like this is the current plan (which will no doubt change, but whatever)...

2024
DISNEY+ = Skelton Crew - Season 1
DISNEY+ = The Acolyte - Season 1

2025
DISNEY+ = Andor - Season 2

2026
05.22.26 - THEATRICAL = The Mandalorian & Grogu (dir. Jon Favreeau) (???)
12.18.26 - THEATRICAL = Untitled Rey / New Jedi Order Project (dir. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) (???)
DISNEY+ = Star Wars: Ahsoka - Season 2 (???)

2027
THEATRICAL = Untitled Dawn of the Jedi Project (dir. James Mangold) (???)

2028
THEATRICAL = Untitled New Republic / Heir to the Empire Project (dir. Dave Filoni) (???)

IN DEVELOPMENT
THEATRICAL = Untitled Lando Project
THEATRICAL = Untitled Taika Waititi Project (dir. Taika Waititi)

I love waiting 3 years between tv shows, ffs.

Ahsoka season 1 - 2023
Ahsoka season 2 - 2026?

And then the damn movie in 2028? There is so much time for Disney to f-ck things up so none of it happens.

I'll be one year from a few movie discounts by the time Heir to the Empire comes out.

it is a joke.

Unfortunately, because Lucasfilm apparently only believes in ONE person writing an entire series - and its subsequent seasons - this is how long it takes. Filoni is writing season two as we speak, which means it likely won't film until 2025, which means it likely won't release until 2026. Then after that he'll write the movie, hopefully film it in 2027, and then it'll (presumably) release in 2028.

If Disney would just do what everyone else in TV has done for decades, and have multiple people writing multiple episodes of any given season, with a single showrunner overseeing, they could knock it all out so much faster. But no, for some idiotic, asinine reason, only Favreau and Filoni can write episodes of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. Writers' rooms, additional creative minds, and diversity of thought (all of which also leads to better ideas) be damned.

Diversity of thought is how the Empire pissed away the Battle of Hoth

Didn't we also have a huge, diverse writer room for one (or all) of the prequels?

On a related note, don't most of the streaming platforms wait multiple years between shows, now? Or is it just for stuff that is really successful?

Stranger Things
House of the Dragon
Did Game of Thrones come out yearly at first?
Ted Lasso
I'm sure there are others I can't remember
TCTTS

Lucas wrote all three, all by his lonesome.

Also, when I say "diverse," I'm not talking about DEI or anything like that. I simply mean multiple people, not *all* of whom are Star Wars fanboys. Like a Tony Gilroy thrown into the mix, a writer who's know more for comedies, etc. Just a group of different people spitballing, as opposed to one guy writing alone for years on end.

ChatGPT, Watson, bard… all are in charge of writing Star Wars these days.

One does not simply come up with farting space ghost Leia without some artificial guidance. The human mind rejects this is as garbage, so why do we think people are still in charge of Star Wars.

Lucas did the prequels alone. There's a great shot in the documentary on TPM where you can tell Doug Chiang wants to say "this looks really stupid) on a Jar Jar storyboard but he doesn't quite have the guts to open his mouth.
