Fans of HBO's "Entourage" are going to be seeing a little bit more of guest star Emmanuelle Chriqui this season.
The actress, who plays Sloan on the series, said the story lines will go a bit deeper with her character - and others, for that matter.

This time we discover a lot more about Sloan - who she is, what she does for a living," said Chriqui. "We get a more in-depth view of who she is than ever before."

America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive.

Ok, so I didn't just start watching the season 5 dvd's last night. I watched it all the way through. Seasons are so short, that only takes about 4 hours. I had nothing better to do on a Thursday night, and I had to be at work at 8 today.

i'm sure they clear that up with a quick line like 'are you good to go after those driving lessons?'

it doesnt take much...

No, I think they cover that in the season premiere. I believe I read that in addition to an appearance on Jay Leno, Vince takes driving lessons.

I've been catching up on season 4 via HBO Comedy and Vince actually takes off in one of the SUVs when he's pissed at the guys. It's the episode where Drama and Turtle give him the silent treatment for acting like a ***** due to Mandy Moore. I think it's the episode before the Aquaman premiere.

My bad on the season. I think I've seen parts of all, but only complete seasons 2, 4, and 5.

13 is the word. Press release from HBO announcing the order said the order would bring it to 79 episodes (66 had been produced through season 5). I wouldn't be surprised to see it only be 12, as the last 3 seasons have been 12 eps (except for the bonus 8 in season 3, which was produced inconjunction with the Sopranos final 9 episodes). HBO has been doing 12 episode seasons of almost all of its series lately.

I don't get why they don't produce more episodes. It's one thing when it's a 1 hour show like the Sopranos but with 30 minute episodes they should be able to make a few more episodes.

2 reasons:

1) It's a business decision. The broadcast nets primarily generate revenue from commercial time. New episodes get larger audiences from reruns, and there is a viewership component involved in ad sales, more episodes= more ad revenue= more profit.

HBO operates on a completely different model, however. They don't sell ads, they sell subscriptions. Quite a few people here I'm sure switch HBO on and off depending on what original series are currently on air. Your average HBO customer, however (late 40's, white, male, income of $100K+) probably does not. So from a business perspective, there is the most incentive to produce as few episodes as possible while keeping their customers just satisfied enough to keep their subscription. Based on their track record, it would appear 12 episode seasons is that breaking point. Any additional episodes produced would provide little additional income at high costs (these episodes probably run $2ish million bucks each, and get an audience of only about 3M viewers).

A very significant number of you here don't even pay for HBO, you just steal it. Would having 20 episodes vs. 13 episodes really make you pay for it? You would be paying the same amount per episode still...

2) From a creative standpoint, it makes absolute sense. Cable took the creative baton from the networks years ago. Why? Primarily the length of their seasons. The majority of dramas, and even a lot of sitcoms these days (particulary Entourage) tell their stories over season long arcs. It is almost inarguable that it is difficult to do this over more than 13 episodes, which is the standard order of almost every cable series. The broadcast standard is 22 episodes. And how many of those episodes feel like "filler episodes".

HBO is able to attract its audiences by providing quality, award winning television on an almost weekly basis. High quality writers and actors flock to the network because they love the model/flexibility. When you add on episodes, the quality quotient goes down, actors and writers are less likely to come to your network, viewers cancel their subscriptions because of the inconsistent quality, and then you are back with a business issue.

What works: "Entourage" continues to be the gold standard for illustrating the interpersonal dynamics between guy friends. The endless taunts, obnoxious outbursts and historical reminders all feel decidedly natural and effortless as we genuinely believe these four guys have known each other since childhood. It's a facet that translates to the show itself: rather than a staccato of jokes and gags, "Entourage" feels more like checking up on a group of old buddies that never change. For instance, once word leaks that Eric is meeting up with Sloane as "just friends," the guys' ribbing exposes his true colors just as quickly as we as his audience friends do. This time out however, at least based on the first two episodes provided for review, the table is set for real change for the guys. Sure the show has flirted with shaking things up before (a fact that's side-splittingly lampooned in a video on Collegehumor.com), but this time out the potential changes come from an organic place and feel less likely to have the rug ripped out at the last minute. Yes, even the boys from "Entourage" have to grow up at some point.

What doesn't: The show inadvertently stumbles across a few anachronisms as the result of some real world developments since the episodes were produced: Vince does "Leno" (complete with cameo) and makes a note to save his more risque stories for lead-out "Conan"; while Ari sings Andrew's praises from bringing in current "My Name Is Earl" showrunner Greg Garcia. In the grand scheme of things it's no big deal but it did bump me at the time. Regardless...

The bottom line: ...you'd still be hard pressed to find a more fun half-hour of scripted television this summer.

Derek,

WatchTVSitcoms.com has all the episodes, so does Project Free TV, but I'm not sure how long it'll take them to get tonight's episode. Probably sometime tomorrow if I had to guess.
