Cool shot of a Warhawk.

Seriously? Pics of a damn P-40 are now filtered????
Somebody flagged my pictures of the blackbird. I took them, so no copyright issue and it was the only flagged photos in a big group of pictures. They weren't even consecutive, so I doubt it was accidental.
Unavailable means some other problem. If it was flagged, it says flagged.
It said flagged, but that didn't last long. I guess the mods nuked the flags quickly.

I don't have a picture to post but coming in to work on Thursday I thought I saw the AN 225 landing at DFW.

If so it's the second time I have seen it as it was in IAH several years ago when I was driving by.
Join the Facebook "DFW Spotters" and they post up all the good pics.

It was the Antonov 124. Imagine courtesy of Dylan Phelps.

I just saw this post before my earlier replies. Brutally slow internet during the cold days meant replying took FOREVER.
Looking forward to more of this ugly beast

All through flight school we kept getting promised the ARH. Then the promise was the -58F. Now I fly Balckhawks.
Yeah...that was going good and then...screeeeeeeech...cancelled by DOD.

Maybe the autorotation incident (FOD is real, folks) during flight test influenced that, but...I think it was much more than that.

And I remember the 58F...that was short lived.

Huge cost increases killed it. When it was cancelled the unit cost was expected to almost double initial estimates.

Upfront...I'm old.

My father flew the largest twin engine plane during WWII. The C46. He was a Hump Pilot...flying from India to Misamera. He NEVER talked about it. It was only after he died that I realized how dangerous his missions were. Thankfully, I have his flight log. Holy Cow, it's crazy!

My Mom working at Vaught in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and assembled the Corsair. Again, she never talked about it.

Wish I could have 15 minutes with each of them right now.

If you ever get a chance to see the races in Reno you should definitely go. Best pure air show I've ever seen. Been to Oshkosh, Sun n' Fun, Regional EAA shows, lots of 'em. The only thing that competes with Reno was the good old days of the CAF shows, but that was really only if you had a specific chub for warbirds. Oshkosh was the best Fly-in of them all, but Reno was the absolute tits when it came to airshow and racing entertainment.

Why do I immediately picture you in a red/white/blue jumpsuit being strapped into that mock up and being just dropped from a crane a'la Super Dave Osborne??

Lotta scope creep in that program helped that...

The jet age changed everything of course, but if a primary trainer could ever be viewed as "sexy" this had to be it:

Good article on the dangers of flying the Hump.

The Hump: Death and Salvation on the Aluminum Trail
By David Spears

Quote:

Know what?" The young corporal shouted to CBS correspondent Eric Sevareid. "Left engine has gone out." The corporal grinned broadly in an "I-told-you-so" sort of way. Sevareid knew the U.S. Army Air Forces' Air Transport Command (ATC) had been struggling with the C-46, which ATC pilots dubbed the "Curtiss Calamity" and "Flying Coffin." Even technical experts from Curtiss-Wright were afraid to fly in their aircraft over the "Hump"the line of Himalayan mountains and Burmese jungles that had to be crossed at great risk to resupply the Nationalist Chinese. Hump pilots, wrote Sevareid, "could plot their course to China by the line of smoking wrecks upon the hillsides." Others sardonically termed it the "aluminum trail."

Is that a -13 Lycoming engine, or -17 Continental? Always one of my favorites. I have -4 hours of PIC in one

And just to throw this out there one of my best friends in my life was flight engineer on B-29. He flew around 30 missions in the Japanese theatre, plus Bikini island tests. Ah, the stories he told me while we camped out next to the plane on our annual Oshkosh trip.
He's passed on now and damn I miss that old fart

Dago Red (in the background) came to Easterwood back in the mid-80's during a CAF Airshow. Impressive beast.

That was a cool time for Warbirds, as most of the old-timers were still alive, spare parts were still readily available, and insurance/fuel were still reasonable.

Sadly, those days are long gone.
