My father flew the largest twin engine plane during WWII. The C46. He was a Hump Pilot...flying from India to Misamera. He NEVER talked about it. It was only after he died that I realized how dangerous his missions were. Thankfully, I have his flight log. Holy Cow, it's crazy!
My Mom working at Vaught in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and assembled the Corsair. Again, she never talked about it.
Wish I could have 15 minutes with each of them right now.
My father flew the largest twin engine plane during WWII. The C46. He was a Hump Pilot...flying from India to Misamera. He NEVER talked about it. It was only after he died that I realized how dangerous his missions were. Thankfully, I have his flight log. Holy Cow, it's crazy!

If you ever get a chance to see the races in Reno you should definitely go. Best pure air show I've ever seen. Been to Oshkosh, Sun n' Fun, Regional EAA shows, lots of 'em. The only thing that competes with Reno was the good old days of the CAF shows, but that was really only if you had a specific chub for warbirds. Oshkosh was the best Fly-in of them all, but Reno was the absolute tits when it came to airshow and racing entertainment.

And just to throw this out there one of my best friends in my life was flight engineer on B-29. He flew around 30 missions in the Japanese theatre, plus Bikini island tests. Ah, the stories he told me while we camped out next to the plane on our annual Oshkosh trip.

That was a cool time for Warbirds, as most of the old-timers were still alive, spare parts were still readily available, and insurance/fuel were still reasonable.
Sadly, those days are long gone.
