Well, with that extra $6 million they'll fit another 2 or 3 or so players and it suddenly doesn't look quite as stark of a contrast.
The Rangers have over $80 million locked up for just 4 healthy players in 2017.
To be sure, they have some big contracts on some guys who are getting a little old, and they've got some decisions to be made, but its not quite the dire financial mess that comparison may suggest. The bulk of every payroll is going to come from a core group of veterans.
I think the bottom line is they're currently regretting that Jordan Zimmerman contract. He's $25 million of that and he pitched horribly this past season.
