Aggie softball split a doubleheader on day two of the Reveille Classic on Saturday. Kelsey Broadus no-hit Campbell in game one as Texas A&M defeated the Fighting Camels, 1-0. In the second game, A&M fell to No. 19 Tennessee, 3-2.

Game one: Texas A&M 1, Campbell 0

The story of day two of the Reveille Classic was Kelsey Broadus.

The Boise State transfer sat down 12 batters on the day, pitching a no-hitter and allowing zero runs. Not to mention, Broadus hit a milestone on the day, passing 400 strikeouts in her career.

The lone run of the game came in the second inning off a Fighting Camel error.

“We need every strikeout she gave us, every out she created for us. I was really proud of her because we literally do not win that game unless Kelsey Broadus puts us on her back.”
- A&M head coach Jo Evans

After Rylen Wiggins walked, Kelbi Fortenberry hit a slow groundball to short. The throw to first was high, getting past the first baseman and allowing Wiggins to make it home and Fortenberry to reach third.

Not only did the Fighting Camels not score, but they really never got close. Of their six baserunners on throughout the game, none reached third base. Two Fighting Camels were left on base to end the game.

After losing her first start to Colorado State, Kelsey Broadus has turned things around completely, feeling more comfortable on her new team.

“This fall, my mentality has changed, and I feel like I’m here for a reason,” Broadus said.

Broadus’ performance was not lost on her head coach.

“That’s the first no-hitter of her career,” said Jo Evans. “We need every strikeout she gave us, every out she created for us. I was really proud of her because we literally do not win that game unless Kelsey Broadus puts us on her back.”

A one-run loss is normally considered a negative.

Texas A&M softball continued its play in the annual Reveille Classic, losing to No. 19 Tennessee, 3-2, during game two of day two. It was the first time A&M faced a fellow SEC foe this season.

Texas A&M head coach Jo Evans liked what she saw.

“I liked our fight as the game went along,” Evans said. “It was great to see Herzog and Cannon get up there and put us right back in it.”

Angelina Alcantar, TexAgs
Trinity Cannon rounds third after hitting a fifth-inning home run.

In the second inning, Tennessee center fielder Kiki Milloy notched the ball game's first hit, and the Volunteers kept up their offensive momentum in the following two innings, hitting back-to-back home runs in the fourth.

A&M finally answered in the fifth with home runs from junior designated player Makinzy Herzog and freshman first baseman Trinity Cannon.

Grace Uribe started in the circle for A&M and posted two strikeouts. The true freshman was relieved by Herzog in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded.

“To me, the story of the game was just our pitchers being able to manage pressure situations. Evans said. “They got themselves in some jams, and defensively, I thought we did a really nice job.”

The contest was tied until the sixth, when Tennessee managed to score off of a wild pitch.

The Aggies fought in the seventh. Jourdyn Campbell hit with two out and two on. The crowd at Davis Diamond on their feet when she hit a foul ball over the fence. It looked like a home run but was just foul. Ultimately, Campbell flew out to end the game.

Evans said this was Campbell’s best at-bat of the day.

“I was pleased that (Campbell) had her best at-bat of the day in that situation,” Evans said. “The game was on the line. No situation she had been in all year has been bigger than that situation right there. She got up there with a plan and stuck to it.”

While a loss is never enjoyable, it showed the Aggies’ potential in facing SEC opponents.

A&M concludes the Reveille Classic with Lamar on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
