What position is Nau going to play ? He is a decent college catcher , but he is hindered because he does not have multiple positions he could play . Too slow for OF , too short to play 1B , probably not athletic enough for 3B . I love the kid and he truly developed himself over the last year , just limited on the defensive side .

like to draft seniors in rounds 7 - 10 because they can pay them less from the pool and have more to spend on other round 1 - 10 players.
Yes, as an example look at Troy Stein from last year. Drafted in the 10 th round, slot pay was $140k. Signed for only $10 k, probably a take it or leave it deal.

Stein is doing OK, too.

I had to look up Stein;s signing bonus after reading your post. Here is an interesting site.

Can someone explain why Banks isn't draft eligible?
Mr.Ackar covered it well but here are the MLB First-Year Player Draft Rules.

quote:
The Major League Rules govern which players are eligible for selection in the Draft. These Rules are detailed, but the basic eligibility criteria can be described as follows: Generally, a player is eligible for selection if the player is a resident of the United States or Canada and the player has never before signed a Major League or Minor League contract. Residents of Puerto Rico and other territories of the United States are eligible for the Draft. Also considered residents are players who enroll in a high school or college in the United States, regardless of where they are from originally.

Certain groups of players are ineligible for selection, generally because they are still in school. The basic categories of players eligible to be drafted are:

  • High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college;
  • College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old; and
  • Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

August 15th is when we will know if those drafted will be returning or ir signees (high school or transfers) will on the club next spring.

It hurts losing Kent and Taylor, but it's huge holding on to Stubbs and Vinson.

Regarding the recruits, really hoped we would land either Paddack or Nash Walters, but I'm incredibly happy we'll see Kolek, Ivey and Joel Davis in maroon and white next year.

Have we lost Kent? This is what he said earlier ....

"I've accomplished my goal of earning my degree in sports management. I've also been accepted into the
Master's program at A&M, so I have that to fall back on. Whether I'm signing or coming back is a decision left to be made after the season is over. Right now my head is completely in on this team. If I'm picked, I'll make a decision later on down the road when this season has come to a close."

I think he'll sign but it would be a huge shot in the arm for our pitching staff if he stays.

If Kent stays, we are freaking stacked at the pitching position and If any of the younger players develop, look out.

There are 11.7 scholarships to be dispersed among 30 or so players and I believe the minimum is now a 15% scholarship. No more just books type allotment. In other words, unless they are getting an additional academic scholarship, most players are not seeing anything close to 60 to 75% paid.

I agree it's hard to find a position for Nau. The thing is, if you can hit, you got a shot at making the show. If he's a good enough hitter, they'll find a spot for him. His challenge is to get some more pop is is bat, in addition to hitting for average. I imagine someone will give him a shot- just make the best of it.

Um no. When MLB teams do their occasional open tryouts, fielding drills are done first. If you can not show at least a certain amount of skill in the field, you do not even get a chance to swing the bat. Nau swung a nice enough bat this spring that he'll likely get some offers to sign as a free agent but was not really surprised that he went undrafted.

Free agent? They just finished 40 rounds of drafting, in baseball, most of those later picks could be considered free agents. Maybe you meant he will get offers from the, independent leagues?
Aston04

Yes- independent leagues.. And the trend is find guys who can hit and figure out fielding..

Jauquin Hinojosa signed a free agent contract a few years ago when he was not drafted.

If as expected our 3 high school draftees sign, our incoming class will not have any players who were drafted and didn't sign. This is unusual. What does it say about our class?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
We had 4 high school pitchers drafted. Walters is gone for sure, 800K is too much to turn down. The only question would be Paddack in the 8th round?

Undrafted Free Agent signings are really common. I'd be very surprised if Nau doesn't get picked up by someone.

The MLB draft use to have far more rounds. You need a rather large number of players to fill out the rosters of the lower minors leagues. Most MLB franchises have at least 3 rookie league teams as well as a short-season single A affiliate. These are mostly filled with players with less then a couple years of pro ball experience. Few are real prospects but you do need good players for the prospects to hone their skills.

You must realize just because they were not drafted DOES NOT mean anything. Many MLB prospects set a number for the signing bonus and communicate to clubs that they will not sign for anything less. Many times clubs call and try to get that number negotiated down. I would bet many of the undrafted guys in this class got lots of calls but turned down the draft to be an Aggie.

It looks like everyone on the list that was drafted is signing. The only one that I haven't heard for sure is Matt Kent.

According to the recently fired Baylor baseball coach Steve Smith, he in fact has players getting 75%.

If you have 5 guys getting 75%, that's 3.75. If you have 25 more guys, you could allow 32% each.

For a place like Baylor, where tuition is like $36K... even 75% paid leaves $9K... not many poor kids going to make that.

I would say that overall the draft was very kind to the existing roster...especially the pitching staff.

the bullpen should been quite good again with: Hendrix, Ecker, Vinson, Schlottmann, and Simonds.

Stubblefield will be one weekend starter and perhaps one of the pitchers listed above will move from the pen to the starting rotation.

then Childress' big offseason project is to get Larkins and Corbin ready to be weekend or (worst case) midweek starters.

I have a feeling Kent is going to sign. The Red Sox are a good organization plus the fact that he's already graduated

regarding Melton, Nau, and Vinson....

if you think about the 5 A&M games that probably had the most scouts in attendance...they were the 2 tourney games vs. Vandy and the 3-game series vs. LSU.

Allemand and Taylor had great series vs. the Tigers. Melton and Nau were so-so in Baton Rouge. Vinson had a rough outing vs. Vandy in the tournament. Allemand had a terrific game vs. Vandy

800k, not bad for a high school kid that has only been pitching a little over a year.

I agree. We have proven offense returning, some that should get better and provide more offense, and hopefully a couple incoming players that will hit.
