I dont know how I can rate him lower, especially if we get in the tourney. However, we have too much talent to be this inconsistent.

F- across the board in everything except excuse making and whining, where I gave him an A+.

I think most coaches would have us in the tourney.

96 for the non-conference
70 for the conference

I weight the conference as 80% of the grade so he gets 75.2 in his 1st season. A solid C. Room for improvement.

B.... Our players were exposed for what they are...(average w/o Acie) and the Big XII is great this year. Three years and we are back to where we were...
Ten years and Turge will be well on his way to having a statue of him outside of Reed....

If we win the NCAA Tourney....A

Otherwise, something in between.

TRANSITION year,,,,no matter who the coach-----tough to do

Not acording to BCG who stated that only ONE of the Kentucky players currently starting would start for him at A&M...

The diff is the coach, plain and simple.

After letting the season settle out, I give Turge a C, with a B being "meets expectations". To give Turge credit, we are a team transitioning from one coach to another, which historically has shown teams struggle to some extent in the first year. Anyone who thought we weren't going to see bumps int he road were fooling themselves. So I believe a return to the sweet 16 or 32 meets appropriate expectations for this team.

The reason I knocked Turge down below meeting expectations is twofold. I think this team loses its focus at times in crucial games (sometime the whole game), which completely falls on Turge's shoulders. The other concern relates to BCG. Kentucky looked like crap earlier this season, but as the season went on, the team has seemed to gel more and more and now looks much improved. The Ags look as lost as ever. This team should be gelling by now.

While I can't give Turge any higher score than a C, I can give him a D if he fails to make the NCAA. Even with the coaching transition, this team should be in the 64 (65).

A little TTT?!

In his 1st year, Coach Turgeon has us 2 BXII Tourney Wins.

Previous Coaching results:

2008: 2-0
---------
2007: 0-1
2006: 1-1
2005: 0-1
---------
2004: 0-1
2003: 0-1
2002: 0-1
2001: 0-1
2000: 0-1
1999: 0-1

How did we keep a guy that went 0-6?

For all those grades we saw, and all the "he is soft," and "Oh, how it used to be...." crying on here... We've just gone 2-0, and upset the #3 Seed.

I'm not ready to crown any championships, but I suspect there are a few people starting to reconsider their 2007-08 season perspective?!

I believe I had him at a B, with stock rising...

The regular season is the regular season.

The conference tourney grade has to be at least a B. Getting to the Big XII semis matches A&M's high water mark under Gillispie.

With college basketball... everyone remembers March.

I think the Post Season gives reflection to the Regular Season.

I think people who had a 22-9 1st year coach as "Way in over his head," were expecting Post Season failure.

What you find is, the Regular Season is meaningless, once you qualify for The Dance, and people upset that Turge left a player in too long, or not long enough, are finding out, he probably knew what he was doing. You can't judge the final grade of the regular season until after the season.

It is like a closer in Baseball... if he has never been in a high pressure game, you don't know how he is going to perform in the playoffs.

Bunch of dimwits on here. Regular season is all about positioning for the post season. We didn't do better because we couldn't shoot well and we just flat gave up some games.

You grade a team on the WHOLE season.

He's up to a B+ now.

The NCAA basketball postseason gives every team an opportunity to atone for regular season underachievement.

To this team's and this coaching staff's credit, we have.

In the context of A&M's lack of basketball achievement, our regular season was great. In the context of what THIS ROSTER was capable of and predicted to do in the regular season, they underachieved. Guys that were getting all Big XII mention in the preseason regressed. Again, that's done with.

The post-season is what people remember, and this team got by a pathetic Iowa State and played a GREAT game against a very good K State with a Nat'l POY candidate. Well done.

The FINAL grade for the overall season isn't done until this tourney's done and our Big Dance run is done.

I'd say that overall, we're up to the C+/B- range, considering our roster. This is where we were supposed to have gotten to this year.

Just like always some of you are putting too much emphasis on the coach, IMO. Yes the coach prepares his team and so forth, but he can't play for them. The team has to take some responsibility for their play (or lack therof). I think coach Turgeon has done a good job. Could he had done better? probably, but considering he has the best 1st year coaching record of any Aggie basketball coach in Texas A&M history, I think he does know what he's doing.

I think he deserves a little more credit than some of you guys are giving him. I believe as he gets his recruits to play his style of ball, I think we'll see a different type of team in the future. I think he's done good with what he's had to work with, considering some of players have played terrible at times.

twopoints, it will be telling to see where the program is in a couple of years.

I don't think Turge is really comfortable "going big", but he pretty much has to with this roster.

I expect that after Joe and Deandre leave, we are going to be much less post-oriented. I see Turge wanting to put 1 big + a couple of athletic swing guys + a couple of true guards on the floor at a time. I think that's more his style. He needs guys that can slash and create 1-on-1. Then again, don't we all?

People get a grip on something. This was a very much tougher conference than last year. The Okie lite and Nebraska losses at Reed were really what hurt all of our confidence but considering how those 2 teams did against other quality opponents those lossea weren't as bad as we deemed at the time. The 16 minute dry spell against Ou was our worst moment but Turgeon has shown resilience in the tournament.Give him a B and we will see how he does in the big tournament.Expect a pleasant surprise.

4 games kept Turgeon from having an incredible first season: OSU, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Baylor.

The blowout losses didn't help either.

Grade for Big XII tournament = B
(Getting to championship would've been A- to A. Winning championship would've been A+.)

To me, if we lose to BYU, it's been about a C+ to B- season... depending upon the margin.

If we beat BYU and lose to UCLA, we've acheived about a B overall for the full season + post-season.

Beat UCLA and we're into A- to A for the full season + post-season. Go further and it's all A+.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'd agree with Adam ...

Still a C for regular season (the original posed question)
B+ for the B12 tourney (partial credit given for hanging with Kansas and dealing with the distractions of Sloan's mom's passing and DJ's illness)

This thread is really dumb.

-We have a lot of athletes...not a lot of really skilled basketball players. We could use a sprinkling of skill to go with our athletes.

-We have no point guard. Argue until your blue in the face, it doesn't matter...we still don't have a point guard. Several games this year we needed a guard that could adjust the tempo of the game and force our guys to run what the bench was asking them to do.

-Joe is the same shooter and guy from the last couple of years, but he's doing it on the legs of a 48 year old man this year. BCG used up basically every bit of spring his knees had last year. He's paying the price this year for all those minutes from last year. That screams at you when watching him play.

-Josh had a tough year going from our secondary option from the perimeter to our primary option. Several of the ugly losses this year were directly attributable to teams doubling and tripling our post and our guards not being able to make them pay for it.

-I went to a lot of games this year, with several on the road. We sat close enough on the road games to hear Turge on the sidelines. He made lots of adjustments that our team could just not execute.

I think he's done a very good job (not great) with what we had and with the unreal expectations some of our fanbase had after losing Law and AK who were the glue inside and out of our team.

On a side note...I was at the hotel in KC this weekend when one of our boosters told Turge's family he couldn't coach. To that guy I say get some class. I don't care what you give the school. You're a sad human being pulling that out in front of his family, and this brain surgeon did it when the Ag fans were all back celebrating the Kansas State win. If this is a snippet of what Turge and family have dealt with since showing up this year, then I can understand some of his "whining" as some of you have put it. His family by the way handled that situation with a lot of class. They showed enormous restraint considering what was said, when it was said, and how it was said. Something I think most would have a hard time doing.

Please find me some preseason media and/or coaches' picks that had A&M as low as 6th in the Big XII.

Hell... find me ONE.

It wasn't just "our fanbase" that had "unreal expectations".

THE NATION expected more out of A&M this regular season.

The regular season was below expectations. The postseason has been at or perhaps a little above pre-season expectation so far.

Because of our regular season, we have made it much more difficult on ourselves to get back to the Sweet 16.

My own expectation going into the season was to hope for a first round bye in the Big XII tourney, get to the semifinals at least, get into the Big Dance, and win at least 1 game.

We are on our way to matching the most important part of those expectations. The postseason is what's important. Beat BYU and this program has plenty of momentum going into year 2 of Turgeon.

It's going to be a while before we know what we've got with Coach Turgeon. How we look with HIS recruits will be telling.
TopTownAg

Thanks for making my point Adam. The NATION did't have the same expectations. Some media outlets thought we could be good, but noted that losing Acie could be a big impact.

A long home slate to open the season took people's expectations a little higher and masked some of the holes in our team.

from ESPN.COM
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/rankings?seasonYear=2008&weekNumber=1&seasonType=2

A&M 16 in preseason AP (3rd in Big XII)
A&M tied for 14 in preseason USA TODAY/ESPN (2nd in Big XII)

Do these polls not reflect NATIONAL consensus of expectations? Were only texags.com posters allowed to vote in those polls?
