never seemed to put a finger on the flow of the game in regards to substitutions. Left guys in way to long when they are making unacceptable mistakes (Roland comes to mind in the OK game).
This team has no identity, which to me reflects on the coaching staff. BG cast the vision of defense and minimizing the mistakes, we heard it over and over from multiple players. Is there the same type communication from this staff and team? Please let me know if there is, and are they sticking to it.

Going into 2005-06, the Ags had lost the highest NBA draft pick in school history (to that point). Remind me... did that roster end up getting better or worse?

You are right... same thing... We had just had our 1st NCAA Tourney appearance, and had the highest draft pick in school history, and a new coach, in 2005-06, and the roster got better *cough* Bullcrap.

Let me go back in time for you... We had a crappy season in '04-05. We had a relatively decent season in going 21-10. However, we played a schedule that was widely ridiculed. Most people describe it as humiliating that a school would play such a crappy schedule... Powerhouses like - Trinity... Texas-Permian Basin, Oakland, PV A&M, Alabama A&M... Chicago State... How many in that season were not even D-1A? He parlayed the following season into a 22-9/10-6 season. But we still played schools like MVState, Southern, Grambling... Savannah State... Again... a pretty embarrassing group of schools... and all he got was 1 extra win.

It was TKC's 3rd season, before he really did anything. Did he inherit a crappy team? Sure... But he had Antoine Wright and Acie, 2 1st round picks.

DJ is a 1st rounder, but let's face it... he isn't AW or Acie, and won't be for another year...or 3.

It wasn't until Acie hit the shot on tu at home, 2 years ago, that TKC had confidence in Acie, and TKC held a very tight leash on the team.

Turge's style is different. But both Team and Players take time and confidence.

We'll see how they do in the BXII Tourney. That will be the team's first real test. Then, we'll see how the Tourney goes.

It is like anything else... It is battle that brings guys together, and they figure out what they can achieve. We'll see how what he did in the regular season translates. He'll tighten the bench, and players will realize how valuable the playing minutes are, and hopefully, fight hard, and play hard.

BTW - We played such schools this season as - tOSU, Wash, 'Bama, Az, LSU... Schools from Major Conferences, who have done quite well. Noone can argue tOSU, Az and LSU are not among programs that are considered well respected.

I would say we are not 3rd best talent wise...technically shouldn't Baylor be way ahead of us for how many 5-stars and high recruits they have, and K-state has 2 guys that are first-round picks, one probably 1 overall....we may have a little more depth but our talent isnt as good as we think

Bob Rogers and Shelby Metcalf were excellent coaches under much tougher circumstances.

If you mean post Shelby, I'll agree but that's not really saying very much.

Turgeon's grade for the regular season is a D and if we fail to make the tournament it will be an F. The overall grade for the season can improve some based on the assumption we make the NCAA tournament and advance past the first round. It would be a mistake to lower expectations for this team now that the regular season is over and give Turgeon higher marks just for finishing a little better than we feared mid-season. This team was at worst the third best team talent and experience wise in the conference. In no way should they have done worse than third in conference this year. There were no complicating injuries or suspensions that should have lowered expectations.

As to DallasAg 94's assertions that this season can be seen as roughly comparable to Coach Gillispie's seasons, I have to disagree. The situations are completely different. Gillispie inherited a team with a culture of losing. He had a great two year starter who was undisciplined and two guards who shared time as a starter in Acie Law and Bobby Leach. Neither were even mid level in the conference prior to Gillispie. Gillispie had to use walk-ons to play in his rotation and tailored his system to fit their skills. The team that Turgeon took over had three 20+ win seasons with post season exposure. All three post season appearances went past the first round. He also had two 3-year starters and one 2-year starter as well as one of the country's most sought after freshman. The overall level of talent was considerably higher for Turgeon but more importantly it was a team with much more experience and a culture of winning.

This year's schedule looks better on paper than in reality. It is very possible that none of our pre-season opponents will make the big dance. Arizona and Ohio State are the only two with an RPI in the top 100 and both will have to play their way in this week. If you credit Turgeon for beating the teams on his schedule then Gillispie deserves the same credit. The difference is that the team clearly improved under Gillispie and appears to have gone backwards under Turgeon. There were players who could not hack it under Gillispie and left but you didn't see anyone that he played regress in performance. He made Antoine Wright into a first round pick and did the same with Acie Law. With Turgeon, you have to credit his development of Davis and Roland but you must also note that players like Josh Carter and Dominique Kirk are not playing as well as last year. Joe Jones is a separate case with his knees. By any measure this year has been a disappointment to this point. If the team makes the tournament and advances to the sweet 16 I will raise my grade to B. We will have made it as far in the tournament as our expectations were at the beginning of the year but you cannot erase the disappointment of the regular season.

I'm not positive, but I think he meant it as a joke...like "He was the best men's basketball coach at A&M this season" like being the valedictorian of a graduating class of 1 student

If it was up to the message boards every team would fire every coach just about every year.

This whole thread is retarded.

C maybe C+. If he does not get tough on D then he will fail and we will be looking for a new coach. I can usually tell if a coach is going to make it after his first year. Turge, however is still questionable. Cannot figure him out. I would like to see better ball handling, less mistakes, and getting the offense to move better. Our posts are too static.

Coach - D ( if they make the tournament )
Coach - F ( if they're in the NIT )
Players - D-

I'm expecting a large drop in attendance next year. I sure hope the Melvin can recruit good athletes in front of crowds in the 5,000 - 7,000 range.

Turge should have done a better job in some games of coaching but really hasn't turned in a bad season with the 'team' he inherited- Lots of talent, but no real team. It is his job to facilitate becoming a team, but you can only get so much cooperation from the guys. The soft approach has yet to be proven successful with these guys and he failed to adjust until late. The post-game comments, while totally/brutally honest, really need to show Turge's fire and not his whining skills.

Players= B-
On talent alone- A/A+, but unfortunately not one leader in the group and they play like a bunch of individuals(no leadership and no real feel for each other's game. Outside shooting has been very poor and the inability to drive to open up the post game has really hurt what should be a strength of this team. You can feed the post all night long and have them kick it out, but if you can't knock down that shot then we're hosed. The lack of leadership really reared its head in those ugly big losses. Just seems to me the players this year didn't do what was expected- just like the coach.

Overall- B- if we make the tourney... Not terrible for a first year hc in the B12 and losing one of A&M's greatest players ever. But also not what people expected/hoped for.

I feel like we could have hired plenty of coaches that could have done this job for the money. Part of the issue is how we achieved the record and not just the record itself.

The regression of the team + his "I don't know what to do" attitude almost gets him a D.

B, for his first year I think he did a great job, 9 losses for your first year is good especially in the Big 12 this year.
