Going into 2005-06, the Ags had lost the highest NBA draft pick in school history (to that point). Remind me... did that roster end up getting better or worse?
You are right... same thing... We had just had our 1st NCAA Tourney appearance, and had the highest draft pick in school history, and a new coach, in 2005-06, and the roster got better *cough* Bullcrap.
Let me go back in time for you... We had a crappy season in '04-05. We had a relatively decent season in going 21-10. However, we played a schedule that was widely ridiculed. Most people describe it as humiliating that a school would play such a crappy schedule... Powerhouses like - Trinity... Texas-Permian Basin, Oakland, PV A&M, Alabama A&M... Chicago State... How many in that season were not even D-1A? He parlayed the following season into a 22-9/10-6 season. But we still played schools like MVState, Southern, Grambling... Savannah State... Again... a pretty embarrassing group of schools... and all he got was 1 extra win.
It was TKC's 3rd season, before he really did anything. Did he inherit a crappy team? Sure... But he had Antoine Wright and Acie, 2 1st round picks.
DJ is a 1st rounder, but let's face it... he isn't AW or Acie, and won't be for another year...or 3.
It wasn't until Acie hit the shot on tu at home, 2 years ago, that TKC had confidence in Acie, and TKC held a very tight leash on the team.
Turge's style is different. But both Team and Players take time and confidence.
We'll see how they do in the BXII Tourney. That will be the team's first real test. Then, we'll see how the Tourney goes.
It is like anything else... It is battle that brings guys together, and they figure out what they can achieve. We'll see how what he did in the regular season translates. He'll tighten the bench, and players will realize how valuable the playing minutes are, and hopefully, fight hard, and play hard.
BTW - We played such schools this season as - tOSU, Wash, 'Bama, Az, LSU... Schools from Major Conferences, who have done quite well. Noone can argue tOSU, Az and LSU are not among programs that are considered well respected.
