My boss is leaving, and we had a going away party last night. Had a couple of WLWs, a GTS, and an EC18. It was my first time trying EC18, and I liked it better than GTS. It doesn't come close to WLW for me though. Every time I have it I'm blown away by how good it is.

Anyone get an allocated bottle from Specs this year? I've typically gotten a call for one of the BTACs, but radio silence this year.

I read that as the 1.75s, not the juice itself.

Belle Meade Cask Strength first time pour tonight. Not bad. Very average. Not worth the 70ish price if I'm remembering the price right. Could be wrong on price as thet was a few piurs ago. Oh and MWND pour is far superior. Had a piur of that again too. Only a small pour left. Gonna have to go secondary market and get snother bottle if MWND. Cheers Ags!!

Didn't know this thread existed on Texags. Are we allowed to discuss bourbon hunting here as well? I'm in the Houston area and have been looking for any hunting group that doesn't use facebook and so far I've been SOL. It's tough to find what you want when you're having to hit all the liquor stores by your lonesome.

Good luck. There are thousands of people doing the same thing you are. And if it gets posted to FB it's gone within minutes. Hard to compete.

Second this. I started hunting regularly about 4 years ago. Since then, I've watched the FB groups grow nationally from 15 k to 44 k. I've seen local groups go from 300 to 6000. Stores know about the groups and it makes things even worse.

I just go to my regular mom and pop shop and hope they get me something nice a couple times a year. I pop into total wine and specs to get things that aren't as hard to find. Good Luck.

This pretty much describes me as well. When the already dumb conversation turned from what do you have behind the counter to "well...what are you looking for?" that was enough for me.

On a side note I did just walk in to a store and saw some Eagle Rare on the shelf. Figured I would grab a bottle until I saw they wanted $49.99 for it. These people are crazy.

I've got a decent assortment of bottles at home, and the only thing that I'm really buying at the moment are WP10 barrel picks. Otherwise I haven't bought much at all recently. I've been fortunate that I've been able to try almost everything on my list (still missing AH Hirsch, VWFRR, and a couple of others), and I'm more than happy to drink the harder to find stuff at a bar. As long as Eight Row Flint has $18 pours of THH I'll survive and leave the hunting, shelf clearing, and FB crotch shots to everyone else.

A lot of whiskey comes from this single distillery.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/your-craft-whiskey-is-probably-from-a-factory-distillery-in-indiana

Here's the list:

https://www.great-taste.net/tidbits-kudos/industry-news/whisky-brands-that-are-made-at-mgp/

From looking through it, a lot of big names have outsourced their Rye selections to them. Names such as Angel's Envy, Bulleit, Rebel Yell, Whistle Pig but not their entire offerings.

If you are in Austin and looking for Old Forester 1910, the Lakeline Total Wine has three cases of it (minus the bottles i just grabbed). Some might now be some the shelf. There was none when I asked.

I also picked up a bottle of 1792 bottled in bond (Total Wine Single Barrel Select). It was the last one of the shelf, but like the 1910 there might be more? And a bottle of Oregon Spirit. I'll post notes when I crack them open.

Speaking of Old Forester, I just opened an OF 1870 and really liked it - then looked for online reviews, and discovered I am apparently the only person on the planet that likes it. More for me, I guess.

Oregon Spirit

OK, this bottle says it's four grain (all local grains), uses Cascade Mountain water, and is aged four years. 94 proof. Grain to glass.

The nose is wood (a little) - but it opens up after a while and you get some sweetness. Color is not super dark. The taste is a bit of wood, a bit of honey sweetness. Wait a few seconds and you get a nice, warm finish that wraps up with mint. It's not overwhelming at all, but it's not lame, either. I really like it - nice smooth drinker. Bought it on a lark - $36.99. Solid for the price imho.

Old Forester 1910

Bottle says it is a recreation of Owsley Brown's personal crafted stock of Old Forester in 1910. 93 proof.

The nose was pure alcohol to me. Added a couple of drops of water - now I get wood and cooked sugar - it took a while to open up for me, though. The water opens it up. This bourbon is darker than the Oregon Spirit. I get cherry? sweetness and vanilla and oak. Dry and oaky at the end. The aftertaste reminds me of cotton candy. Not bad - it's the best of the Whiskey Row series (sorry LawHall88, I agree with others about the 1897). Not bad for $46.99. The Old Forester Single Barrel I have is better, but this is a good bourbon, too.

Bonus - I had a bottle High West Bourbon that I opened, too.

High West American Prairie Bourbon
Bottle says right up front this is a blend. All at least 2 years old and sourced (I appreciate they state that clearly). 10% of the after tax profits go to American Prairie Reserve in NE Montana.

The nose is light sweetness. The bourbon is very pale - kinda yellow. Light wood flavor up front and a cherry sweetness (not overwhleming) at the close. Pretty bland, to be honest. Least favorite of three to opened tonight. At least a small amount of my money went to the American Prairie Reserve.

IMO the 9 banded has an underaged, charcoal flavor to it.

As a bourbon and rye guy who eventually wanders into rum and loves craft beer, will this be worth my $182.99 in DFW? I have the connection to where its being sold....and I have no idea what I would be buying...

Has anyone tried Bookers 30th Anniversary? I got a bottle and wondering if I should keep it, or try and trade for something.
