Considering that with every bottle of WT Honey that is sold, the proceeds are going into Jimmy's pocket, it wouldn't be that hard to claim to like it...

Ducks,

My recollection is that 20yr wheater was not cheap! I opted for the 9yr instead.

The 20 year was $210.

What barrel # is your 9 year? And I am assuming you are referring to it being a wheater as well.

The 9 year wheater that I just received is #1598

How did that come to happen?

It was at a tasting event, and I talked to him for a minute or two at the end. We weren't just hanging out at a bar drinking.

Speaking of tasting event, last night was the Angels Envy Cask Strength tasting at Brennan's. If you brought your box and bottle, Wesley Henderson would sign them.

Mr. McGibblets, where were you sitting?

When you walked in I along with Tx4Guns were sitting to the far right.

Facing the bar, I was at the back table on the far right. I was not the guy who was on a first name basis with Wes though.

I went to the one in Austin. Nice event.

How does the cask strength compare to the regular bottle. I'm not a fan of the regular bottle at all. It's too flat for me.

The cask strength just seems like it packs a lot more flavor overall, and a stronger port influence specifically. It is what I think Angels Envy should have originally, although the port influence might be too strong for some. I definitely enjoy the cask strength more, but not at that price.

My favorite is the rye, but it is definitely not for everyone. It is a nice dessert/after dinner drink, and is very sweet. I wont buy it often at $70, but its a nice change of pace every once in a while.

Quantum Ace, we were the first guys to get our bottles signed last night. Needed to get outta there bc we had a dinner reservation downstairs. It was great, too!

So Wes is the master "blender" right?

Yes, I believe Wes has been pretty much running the show since his father passed away. He did say that the current Angels Envy Cask Strength was selected by his dad.

Went to the Dallas one. Thought it was a fun event overall.

And I also liked the rum finished rye best of all the AE lineup.

Has anybody found a bottle of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof in Texas? If so, where at? Many of the liquor stores I've talked to have never heard of it, and all of them have never received any. I'm guessing Specs has received some, but I'm way down the list.

I only saw it for a 2 week period last August. The best $35 bottle (case and cash discount) of bourbon on the planet. Good luck and yes your best bet is Specs. And no, you don't need to be on the "list". They will put it on the shelf if they have it in stock.

Back to the blending of Weller Antique and Weller 12... I got a nice decanter and want to keep whiskey in it. So I was thinking of keeping this blend. But instead of just going for a 50/50 or 60/40 mix I wanted to test a bunch and see what I preferred (if any). So my question is how do you blend samples? Can I just do it in a glass cup or water bottle? Or does it need to be in a glass bottle? I'm assuming I can get a pretty good idea of the flavor by mixing a couple ounces of each and letting it rest for 1-2 weeks. Is this more or less correct? And finally, is there any reason why I wouldn't want to keep whiskey in a decanter?

I have a bunch of empty mini bottles I use for samples. I guess you could use plastic, but mine are glass.

I would recommend 4oz glass bottles with screw top for creating different sample proportions.

The only downfall of a decanter is that very rarely does the top have a good seal and it is usually wobbly. I use mine for whatever happens to be the 'house' bourbon and I could care less what guests mix with it.

Also, I don't often keep empty bottles, but Stagg Jr and Old Forester Birthday Bourbon empties make really nice decanters for future use.

That is what the Canadian crap is for!

Mine is usually the W12/OWA blend or VOB BIB. Canadian whisky has no place in my house unless it's 1960's - 1970's Crown Royal distilled in Waterloo. Completely different animal compared to the current stuff they wrap up in a purple bag...

Allegedly, Crown's XR is from salvaged barrels from the Waterloo facility. My guess is they are blending the Waterloo stuff with more recent stuff to stretch it.

Yeah, the original XR with the red bag/box was from Waterloo barrels. That's been discontinued for several years now and the current blue offering is from La Salle. I doubt there are many Waterloo barrels still floating around. If so, they would be 20+ years old.

Glad I got a red box a couple of years ago! I stashed it away... had to go find it to check the color!

Just opened a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 and it is really tasty. Not as smooth as my normal (woodford) but I really enjoy the flavor. Not going to pretend I know exactly what I am talking about but it seems to have good depth to me and a long finish. Also have started using bulleit rye with a splash of coke as a mixer and like that a lot too.

Unless it's wt honey.

It will be a long time before I get a chance to try all of the fine pours you guys have sitting on your shelves. I did find a bar on Rainey st. that had four roses 125 and tried that. It was the best thing I have ever sipped for sure. They had pappy as well but it was so outrageously overpriced I couldn't pull the trigger.
joshwayne330
How long do you want to ignore this user?
^^^ Yep, if you have tried FR125, it really doesn't get much better than that (overall). If you have to pay the bar/secondary pricing for current Pappy, it will be a let down. Try some BTAC if you get a chance.

Thanks. The price tag on pappy 23 year was unfathomable. $125/drink. I think the fr125 cost me $22. Sounds like my decision was easier than I knew.

I saw a red box XR yesterday, but I passed on it at $140. I never got into the higher end Canadian stuff, so I have no idea if that was worth it or not.
