I don't follow this thread much, so forgive me if it's been asked already, but what is the consensus on basil hayden's? And two part question, what is a normal price for a 750ml?

I ask because I often see it on sale at 2-3 places I frequent, marked down from like $45 to $26-$30. Have been curious why it's always discounted so much, if that is actually the case.

I'm not a big fan but FWIW I rarely see if for less than $45 or so.

I like the idea of a whiskey festival here in Texas, but I have a feeling it will be overrun with skinny jeans and Toms, and handlebar mustaches. The type of people that claim to be bourbon drinkers, then ask if you drink bourbon or whiskey. The ones that drove a $25 bourbon (W12) to, what, $80, if you can find it.

We all know the type.

Usually see it in the 30s. I think it's garbage and it's popular bc the bottle looks "fancy"

Glad to see the other responses that are not big fans of Basil Hayden. I am not a huge fan even at $30. Jim Beam makes some much better booze than this. I just bought their Jim Beam distiller's cut and was pleasantly surprised at $20 a bottle. I've also enjoyed every Booker's that I have tried as well.

Picked up 2 bottles of EC barrel proof batch "B517" last month in OK while driving through. They were hidden behind the bottles of your everday EC.
Passed this little liquor store in a one light town, decided to turn around and see what they had. The lady that owned the place didn't know what barrel proof meant, she just thought the price of EC went up for some reason.

From my other guy,
Blanton's Gold $86 per
Straight from the barrel $113 per
$25 per to get to the US

Plus + $15 on my end to repack and ship.

THIS IS NOT TAKING AN ORDER

So looking at this, to your door:
Gold $126
SFTB $153

That's pretty damn steep.

Yes it is steep. But it is soooo good! Probably not worth that. But oh so good

Isn't that about what MOM was charging for it? Just had a buddy bring me back a Gold from UK. I like SFTB better than Gold.

Hate to say it but I'd probably still pay that for an STFB.

What is the difference between the regular Blanton's and the gold? Aged longer or different mash bill? Is the sftb just a barrel proof version of regular or gold, or a whole different animal?

I'm staring at a bottle of Blantons right now at my local store. $60, is that normal?

Also they have regular old buffalo trace, is that hard to come by these days? Their price tag says allocated, but they have a dozen cases or so.

It's not really clear. Gold vs. SB is like Dark Chocolate vs. Milk Chocolate. SFTB is a hotter version of Gold to me.

I would say it's all based on the SFTB pour. I prefer the Gold out of all 3.

Decent price on the Blantons. No reason regular Buffalo Trace should ever be hard to find. It's a decent mass produced mid-shelf bottle, worth the $23-ish it sells for, but no more.

good deal, I picked it up on an a whim. Mainly because I was in Vegas last weekend and saw a bottle of Blantons behind one of the casino bars and so I indulged in a few and really enjoyed it. I hadn't seen that bottle since maybe a decade ago when my buddy used to drink it. Now reading this thread it seems like it's becoming one of the ones at the bit hard to find?

In some places. Trying to get a hold of one in DFW or Houston is pretty tough. Smaller towns are a little easier, when I go to California it's sitting on shelves collecting dust all over the place.

It all depends on which market it's going to. Reg Blanton's is 6 year, the Japanese bottles are 8 year. There are differences between them all. It's dumb but the entire lineup, except silver, are on my want list. I have SFTB, just need the other rainbow.

My Basil Hayden tasting notes: all the unpleasant funkiness of a rye without any of the sweetness of good quality ryes. Awful. However I will concede some people do genuinely enjoy this. I can understand this because it is definitely unique. But my palate can't stand it. In my personal top 5 bad pours. Never know until you try it though. And $26-30 is a fantastic price for it.

I do too, it's quite impressive. I'm drinking a bottle of regular Blanton's now that's the best I've ever had. I drank at least a third of it two fridays ago straight from the bottle playing golf. I knew it was special when newbies were drinking it hot straight out of the bottle and loved it. Generally speaking though, Gold wins. And they are all mash bill #2 to answer the question above. Bottled at higher proof as well.

A lof of people like the Gold but I just can't get into it. I'd rather have the SB.

I bought a bottle of the MB Roland HBS barrel proof but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Curious what everyone else thinks. Also saw that they have a full line of other bourbons, included a wheated.

Wow. People calling Basil Hayden "garbage"?

The only real downside to BH is the proof - wish they would up it to 95 or above personally, because at 80 it just doesn't have a whole lot of body and a weak finish.

This is why a mid to bottom shelf $20 whiskey with a screw cap is now in the allocated category and people pay stupid 5x prices for it.

I think a lot of issue stems from the price.

No reason to spend money on BH when OGD114 is available imo

What Charlie said. Also, picked up jug handled of VOB 6Y BIB 100 proof last night. Excited to tear into it this weekend.

Yep, Basil Hayden isn't bad, but it's not worth anywhere near its price. The gem of the OGD/BH product line is OGD114, which sells for 40% less than BH.

The line has a very unique mashbill, and for whatever reason it just doesn't seem to benefit much from extended aging. And BH seems to be priced based on the age on the label rather than the actual quality of what's in the bottle.

Didn't realize the 6 year had been discontinued. I moved to Texas right around then and never saw it again after the move. I had just figured it wasn't sold in Texas.
