Having my first Blackout Stout from Great Lakes before I pop open the growler of Sculpin.

Closing up shop in a few days for a yet to be determined period of time...

...so finishing with some of my best tonight...


Nose is initially all bourbon but as it warms adds some peat, vanilla. Taste is HEAVY bourbon up front, vanilla, toffee very distinctly, char/smoke, some plum, with a tasty pecan finish. A bit of heat faintly just a few moments after swallow. Warmth follows. Bourbon definitely present as an overtone on the taste and in terms of alcohol/warmth. No real cocoa or coffee. As it warms more raisin and plum notes, with a fantastic tawny Port wine type finish and a little bit more sting from the alcohol on the sides of the tongue. As you finish the glass a bit of bourbon-soaked fudge adds to the complexity. Mouthfeel is syrupy but less than creamy, overly fizzy for me, evens out and gets a bit creamier as it warms...but still could be creamier/smoother.

Overall gotta say this is super complex and certainly great, but it's heavy on the bourbon and moreso than I would prefer. Not my favorite BBA, which belongs to KBS, but I think to be fair this needs some age...which my hiatus and the two remaining bottles will provide.

and I gotta say taking down a whole 12 ounce bottle alone is seriously a task...I like to say rather than 15 abv this is 30 PROOF

Round one of the Vail Big Beers tastings. There's 16 of us so we had multiples of everything. Bourbon County Proprietors Reserve was pretty legit. I think barrel aged sexual chocolate was my favorite. Astrolabe was a hit too.

Picked up some Red Chair earlier. Spring beers can't get here fast enough for me. I'm tired of the heavy, barrel-aged stuff for the moment.

I was told today that Spec's College Station would now be stocking Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale permanently. Picked up a four pack today. This is very good news, if you haven't tried it yet. It is the best Bourbon Barrel Ale I have had, and they are supposed to get the Bourbon Barrel Stout soon. Thank Chris up at Spec's for getting it on the regular item list if you like it. =)

Cracked open Odell Deconstruction tonight. It's damn fine. Drinking a 10.5 abv 750mL is probably going to be my demise. Hoping my brother comes through and brings me a few other CO brews back while he's there this week.

(512) Cascabel Cream Stout while watching the game tonight. Not my favorite of theirs but not bad either. Seems like a pretty straightforward stout until the finish when there is a bit of heat from the peppers.

My dog approves of Karbach's El Hopadillo 'Negro' IPA.
