Only 2 players with a very good chance of keeping Sam out of the final group - he very well may be in there if Rahm/Hovland don't make a move.
Hovland is blocking those irons out right today when they were so crisp yesterday. Going to have to clean that up if he wasn't to go low in this weather

Wonder what private jet will fly Sam home Sunday night so he can tee it up in the Aggie Invitational Monday morning?

Brooks out front, Sam in second, Rahm Hovland and Morikawa in play.

If the weather can make a favorable turn this could be a great Masters weekend.

Top 12 gets him invited back next year
(If he finishes top 12), when he elects to go pro later this year does that negate his status? In other words, I wonder if he would have to maintain his amateur status to come back?

He would get to come back regardless of his status.

PGA is garbage. Neither of the top two players on the leaderboard are even on the tour.

The criteria doesn't specify pro vs. am - just says "Top 12 and ties from previous Masters".

Nope. He T12 and ties get invited back the following year.

Sam needs to maintain his amateur status in order to play in the US Open and the Open Championship (via his US Amateur victory) unless he were to meet another qualification.

It is. Much rather they had to keep playing in that wind instead of getting to wait until it passes.

Dottie Pepper said they're keeping the players in place so hopefully it'll be pretty quick.

Correct. Top 12 return regardless of status.

They changed the rules with the US Open. You can now use your exemption even if you turn pro.

I remembered some of the story about Ken Venturi in 1956 from The Match. But I just relooked it up and man -- just brutal.

He was four clear after three rounds and shot 42 on the back nine for an 80 -- TO LOSE BY ONE.

Man that is rough.

Tiger will tie the record for consecutive cuts made (23) if he can make it to the weekend.

During this break, take a few minutes to digest what Sam has done today.

His 36 hole score of 136 is one behind Ken Venturi's 1956record of 135 (66-69)

His 68 in round 1 is 2 shots behind Venturi's record of 66

Tiger went 72 72 in 1995 (his first as an amateur)
Tiger missed the cut after going 75 75 in 1996

Bennett's performance over the past two days is nothing short of monumental.

I didn't realize that. Would think Sam would turn pro then right after NCAA tournament.

Maybe not, but that's a big ask for Rahm to not pick up a couple strokes.

Sam's already going to have enough pressure due to the accomplishments he's already made this week. He doesn't need to be thrown into the final group. Let him continue to do what he's doing and good things will come.

F that.

He thinks he's as good as anyone and thrives in the spotlight. Playing against someone like Brooks can bring the dog out in him.

I've had is biography in my office for a while. Been meaning to read it and see what he said about it.

But I have a ton of golf books to catch up on.
