Played pine forest this weekend. Its really hard to beat what they offer in terms of price. Apparently the junior exec is going up after the new year but still a good deal.

Plus be ready to pay $150 F&B minimums each month
Perks: no cart fees, use of shooting range and gun club, Chet Williams track, all of the pros are from Scotland which is pretty cool and they take member trips to scotland to play the open courses each year.

This is great feedback. Champions would be ideal if it was just a little bit closer. There's definitely an appeal to playing with avid golfers and not beginner hacks or "I came for the beer" bros.
I've heard the members course at GCoH is typically in better shape than the tournament course, which would be nice because the tournament course has a tendency to turn into a swamp anytime it rains. Unfortunately, that course is also not exactly handy to downtown.

The member course is definitely in better shape than the tournament course but that's not meaning to put the tournament course to shame as it's usually in pretty good shape. My good friend from high school's dad is the assistant superintendent on the members course and he has it in incredible condition almost year-round. To say the commute to downtown isn't friendly I would argue it's a very simple drive to downtown in my opinion maybe 15 minutes
before you decide Champions is ideal, you need to call and find out how long the waitlist is. you might not become members for a few years. that goes for many high end courses.hoffalot said:

You might want to consider the course in Conroe, very cheap and they will let anyone in.

Champions has not had a waitlist in ages. I also think it is more convenient to downtown than most realize.
I am doing some research and wanted to add some updated information as I get it. I am looking at Riverbend CC, Westwood GC, and Sugar Creek CC. Below is what membership info I have received (so far):

WCC young executive membership (up to 39) is $15k initiation and ~$600/month. I'm at WCC so if you end up joining here, let me know. Not sure what Panther Trail costs, though my guess is around $2-3k initiation and $400/month.
Thanks for the info on Riverbend - it has me actually thinking. I live in West Pearland and Im actually in between Riverbend and my home club of Golfcrest. I've always enjoyed my guest rounds there, and while imo Golfcrest is a tougher course, RB has more of a classic feel.
If I were comparing the two, Golfcrest has a great membership, typically outstanding greens (unless something out of the ordinary occurs), and a course that allows your handicap to travel well. RB has what I mentioned earlier, as well as a halfway house and a much nicer locker room.
Currently 37, so I would benefit from the cheaper initiation.

I've never stepped foot on RB. Going to tour it Saturday. I have a good friend that's a member at Sugar Creek and I really like the courses. They sent their offer, which I'll post tomorrow, and I think they've got to be a little more competitive based on what Riverbend is offering.
I've never played Sugarcreek. I know it has three nines and they are RTJ who I really like, but never had the chance.
Did you ever consider Braeburn? I've never played there either and wonder what they are like.

Riverbend is closer in quality to Westwood than it is to Sugar Creek. Sugar Creek is not impressive in my opinion but to be fair I haven't played there in 3 years or so.

The barrier to entry to BraeBurn is the initiation. I like BraeBurn the best but the value isn't there for a single guy. The course at Westwood is nice but the greens have been meh the last few times I have played and the locker room has been dead. Sugar Creek has the 3 9's and, from my experience with my member friend, a fun locker room environment. The greens have been fantastic, as well, the last few times I have played.
Since this thread has been revived our director of golf at Houston Oaks left for a club in Lake Tahoe and as of June 15 Hal Sutton has taken our position.
I think it's mid 30s for BB now and around 600/mo. That said, tee times are easy, MLR any day after noon is happening to some degree, fantastic family stuff, course is incredible (condition and layout).
Gotcha, forgot that Braeburn's price point was different form the others. Got a bad vibe/experience when I visited Westwood, so if I was looking at the four for me it would come down to RB or SC. Hope you get a great deal at a great place you like - club golf is a different level of fun imo.

He's made a living playing golf and and now gets paid basically to play with members at a high end club? Last Friday he was playing with Case Keenum who probably should have been at OTAs.

I thought I would bump this thread as I am in the beginning stages of research of all Houston clubs.
Golf is priority but a good social scene is preferred too. I am under 30, live in the heights, and work in city centre. What are some good options?

This November will be my fourth year at Riverbend CC (RBCC) and while a bit bias there is not a better young executive membership around the Southwest part of Town. Locker room is one of the best in Houston, good vibes. Golf course for the most part in always good shape, and its a tough test.
Just finished playing Braeburn, always a fun round and always in fun shape. The buy in right now is $42k which you get half back if you leave......the course is a bit shorter than the RBCC and IMO not that hard. Its about the same slope rating as Gus Wortham from one tee up.
Westwood has the best short game and practice area and a decent parkland track.
Sugar Creek has the 3-9s but the Robert 9 is a boring track, 3-5 par 4's are the same 400 yards with house left and same type of bunkering. That 9 gets the least play.
Good luck in choosing your home course.

Look into Pine Forest. Membership is getting younger and younger by the day. Good golf w 27 holes. Hard to find a better value CC in Houston. A little west for you, but I still think it's your best bet.

Hearthstone may be worth a look now that 290 is wide open its a pretty quick drive and has a pretty active MGA & A&M contingent.
It's a clubcorp course so you'll also get reciprocation at other courses via their YEX program.

Practice facility is good, its a double sided range where one side is always on grass. The far side of the range has covered shade for the summers. The short game area is small, the practice putting green is really good IMO.
No outside carts are allowed, then again its not a neighborhood golf course which is good. Nothing more annoying than seeing 4 cats on a golf hole.

I live in Heights and am a member at Pine Forest. It takes about 25 minutes to get there on weekends, which if you think about it is not that much longer of a drive than most other clubs in town except for River Oaks, and I agree best value around because of 27 holes and good practice facilities and all of the non-golf amenities.
I just rejoined Riverbend after a 2.5 year stretch at Sweetwater (joined RB originally back in 09).
Very impressed w the bunker changes and covered driving range / practice area (similar to Braeburn).
Give us a look. I'm a complete golf snob...meaning I'm very picky about my golf courses. If we are talking golf course only...i prefer it over every course mentioned above (including Lakeside). Of course the locker room is on point too.
There has been almost 0 turnover with staff also which I think is a good indication of a vibrant club. Most of these people still remember my name.
