Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't get this argument. The whole point of getting ranked high is to get the attention(ie. offer) from the school you want to play for. There is no other reason for a kid to care except ego. But if Tech is where he really wants to play and has already offered how would a higher ranking be an incentive for him to change his mind?

I'm worried because tsw knows how much Ketchum weighs soaking wet.

that's crossing a line... I'm married, have a daughter with another on the way. Yes I graduated from Texas, but unlike most aggie's presuppositions, no I do not have any homosexual tendencies...not that there is anything wrong with that(meaningless Seinfeld reference, since the show is so revered on this board). I don't know Ketch well, but I have met him a few times, both before he lost weight, and after. Yes he was living large in the day, but he has done a hell of a job of getting back into shape and should be commended as such.

The bottom line is that all these recruiting services are a business with the laudable goal of making money. They all preach to the choir to some extent. The irritation ags have with Ketchum is that his preachings are routinely cited by legitimate news organizations as "fact". Look at the article in the AAS today. They don't ask Billy or the Websider guys for their take. Articles like the one today build momentum for one program over another. That aint right.

and yes...any recruiting service is gonna be slanted towards the fans they are catering to. Always have been and always will be. It's in the respective "guru's" best interest to do so. Not many people will line your pockets with $10 a month to hear bad news. Conversely, the local newspapers are gonna also use the guru that tends to slant his views toward the same crowd. Is austin comprised solely of Horn fans? Absolutely not...but for the large part the town is and thus it only makes sense for the AAS to use a ranking system that caters to the longhorn fans...much like the b/cs newspaper would be wise to use Luicci's (sp?) service or for the paper in norman to give what's his name (k'st guy that runs the oklahoma rivals board) a call when looking for a quote. Is it completely honest and unbiased? NO. But for the most part, people tend to want their information sprinkled with a little bias towards their respective line of thinking. It's human nature. I watch Fox news not because I think they are the most accurate news service out there, but because they report the news with a more conservative slant...the same reason some of the liberal crowd prefer CNN or MSNBC...it's the same news, but from a leftist perspective.

I am rather disturbed. I play poker with Geoff every week. He is not a lard ass. I would guess he is around 5'10" and weighs around 200 pounds. I do not know what he may have looked like in the past, but he looks just fine to me now. He is a damned good poker player, an excellent reporter of all news regarding Texas Longhorn sports, and a lot of fun. Many of you have your panties in a wad over a list that will fluctuate quite a bit depending on film received and evaluated this spring and summer...and games he and his Orangebloods staff watch during the fall.

Stick to their guns? So whatever the list was 2 months ago should stay the same all the way through signing day? No, if he has an opinion about a player from film (or from never seeing him), then goes to see the player in person and comes away thinking more or less of his abilities, I expect that to be reflected in the rankings.

Having no backbone would be coming up with a list and not changing it the more info. you get.

This is a ridiculous premise. Think.

Even if you were perfectly objective (and you have to have gone to college and see enough ball to want to make a living doing this stuff), you could not cover one team enough to make money, and still make a perfectly objective list.

Think about it.

- If your school commits a player, you check out film. If you missed him and he's a good to great player, he *will bump* your rivals commits down.

- If your staff is worth a hill of beans at evaluating talent, then you will value their opinion, and you will rank a guy higher *because* your staff offered him. If I'm an OU guru, I definitely rank their recruits high. More often than not, I'd be right.

- If your staff is down on a guy, and you find out about it (say, you ranked a guy high and the staff lets you in on a secret), more often than not, you'd drop the guy. Sometimes, you'd drop them a lot.

- You will not have the same set of offsetting opinions for other programs. Of course, the smart way to do this is for Ketch to sit down with Hop and have some objective discussions... but they're too busy pissing all over eachother.

- Texas gurus will not have perfect access to Georgia recruits, and vice versa. So your kid is ranked high to the extent that you promote him, and it really is a political game more than a talent show. The best that you can hope to do is to rank consistently within a demographic.

- And Texas is huge...too big for a staff that makes less than a quarter million a year.

You guys are all looking like this like it is an exact science. I mean, do we really know that Cooper's knee is shot or not? Does he even know? Do we really know that Jones is a better end prospect than Kindle?

I just know that Cedric Benson's rankings spanned a wide range. And righrfully so. We've seen a whole lot of running back busts in Texas. You don't know if a guy will make it in college until he does it or doesn't do it on the field.

Read your lists. Talk a little smack. But you've got to be pretty screwed up to hate someone with so much passion...look at the things that you're saying about Ketchum. He's a nice guy. Drop him an e-mail. If you get a chance, talk to the guy. You may actually learn something. Do his lists have bias? Of course they do. And that's just the way it is.

No, the analogy was that t.u. claimed he was the best defensive lineman in the conference LAST YEAR and he got beat out by Ags and Okies for first team all conference.

I guess it's because you assume the prospective recruit has already been offered by the school he wants to play for, and maybe that isn't the case, especially if he wants to entertain offers from out of state.
