Just got the contract from EO. They put me in a 12 month plan at an average of 21 cents for 12 months. Meanwhile on power to choose, there are numerous plans that are less than that, for longer period.
I'm brand new to EO like literally in the last week, but they seem to have failed their customers in this current environment.

As others have said, I bet they are simply overwhelmed with new customers and maybe aren't scaled appropriately to handle the demand.

Its deeper than that. Energy Ogre's secret sauce was a marketplace that gave huge incentives to jump to new plans. Retail would compete for customers constantly and you'd win. They even boasted about having access to nonpublic options.

And its obvious now that Energy Ogre isnt large enough to dictate better terms for customers. And when the whole retail electricity space got shellacked by the winter storm this is their first opportunity to recoup some losses, the retail providers aren't letting anyone in on a deal.

So Energy Ogre looks like a dumb deal, and it is, in these environments. I can sign myself up for a terrible plan without having to pay $10 a month extra for the opportunity to do so.

I tried energy ogre for a week, told them to put me on a plan ASAP, and that their price to beat was 17.4 cents/kwh. After hearing nothing back from them, calling, getting pulled on hold for a long time, they then shared that they've got jack all and were going to quietly keep me on the same plan. I just cancelled and told them I can do better on my own. If and when prices come down, I'm sure I'll hear about it and be able to act quickly.

Another thing is that Energy Ogre will be quick to pounce on prices the second they drop. So be prepared for sitting through 20 cents a kilowatt hour for a few months, pay out the cancellation fee in a few months, and be put on something thats 17 cents a kilowatt hour. Its going to be a long time before your electricity prices really come down on Energy Ogre as you keep getting crushed with cancellation fees.

EO got me on a 12m plan in late March for 7.6c/kWh (+ ~4c/kWh from ONCOR TDU). 11.6c/kWh is higher than I've ever paid but wow, seeing these rates of 17, 18, 20 is crazy.

We should add 20GW of new nuclear generation in ERCOT. Give a 20 year tax abatement and state loan guarantees to new nuclear developers.

It'll take 15 years but might as well get started. We'll need more generation anyway.

Instead I'm sure we'll see a bunch of solar.

If you want to go longer term (60 months), Discount Power has plans in the Houston market at 9.8cents per KWH energy charge + the TDU charges...works out to 13.9cents at 2,000KWH. No base charges or gimmicky credits. The same plan in the Tyler area is about 1 cent cheaper.

$300 cancellation fee. which isn't terrible for that term length.

Anecdotally, it seems like Houston has significantly lower rates than DFW.

You know, I'm thinking about signing up that plan. I'll probably one day pay that cancellation fee but prices aren't coming down anytime soon. And 5 years means there's a lot of runway for the math to work out to break that contract and come out ahead when prices do come down.

No brainer to me. I'm paying 15c for 20 months that started yesterday with a $250 cancellation fee. Way up from 4.6c I was paying. If rates even fall to 10c (as an example), I'm looking at 3 months to break even. I'm typically in a 12 month contract so 20 months is something new for me.

Was just on the phone with them for 56 minutes and couldn't agree on the plan. I know to expect poor customer service at these cheaper electric companies, but I always forget how frustrating it is.

They told me they couldn't hook up my electricity until 6/21 when my contract is up on 6/13. Then they said if I wanted it hooked up on the 13th it'd be between $1.70 - $152. What a range....

Decided to go with Constellation. 36 month at $.151/kwh based on 2000kwh usage. Doesn't seem like any gimmicks and $99 cancellation fee.

If I screwed up, someone please let me know.

I'm going to cry when my current plan ends in August (1 year plan), with the TDU charges it's 9.6c / kwh over 1000 and 9.4 over 2000. I go through Real Simple Energy and they said to be prepared for a huge increase. I told EO to pound sand about 3 years ago, total garbage.

I use the same data as Ogre and lock in for the longest term I can find at a good rate, no short term whatsoever. I hate to see where it will be once my 2 year contract is up.

Yes EO will find you the current best rate but in times like this the best current rate still sucks.

I just signed up on-line and didn't need a rushed install. I suppose you could have just gone out of contract for two-weeks with your current provider.

Certainly not advocating for DP, but I had them a few years ago and didn't have any billing issues. I think the range on install is because it is not their costs, it comes from Centerpoint or whoever owns the lines in your area.

DFW area and looking at DP based on above posts. EFL is showing 12.9 kWh for 2000 kWh usage. 5 year contract with $300 cancellation fee. Gonna miss the 9.1 kWh but feel like this is pretty solid under the circumstances. The range on the cutover charge (I have 2 months left on current contract) is a concern. Oncor was just out last month and replaced the meter as it failed so don't need to worry about meter replacement charges which are also stated to range from a couple bucks to $150.

Edit: I'll call Oncor during normal business hours and ask about the switch charge. I'll post an update.

Dang, in Houston and I signed up with MP2 Energy (now called Shell Energy) on May 25th for 14.9 / 14.5 / 14.3 for 60 months. I go look now and everything is already at jumped to at least 15.2 / 15.4 / 15.9 and short term is even higher!

I set up my install time to July 12th to avoid early termination dues and glad I did because I dread what the rates will be come July.

Oncor rep said the switch charge should just be 70 cents. I went through the sign-up process with Reliant to the point of picking a switch date and it came back as 0 to 15 cents but could be as high as $19.70. So I feel fairly confident I'm not going to get hit with a $100 plus switch fee just because I want to pick the switch date. Problem is I went back to DP website and the 12.9 plan is gone. Figures. On to plan B.

I signed up for the DP in the Houston area yesterday and was in the process of trying to get my dad switched in east TX. you can still access this morning but you have to do it by accessing through the link in the middle of the page where the flags are (see txt below). It did go up from 12.9 to 14.9 and cancellation went up from $295 to $395

What is the usage charge if you drop below 2000kWh? I had Discount, had a $9.95 usage charge if I didn't use 1000kWh, which was 6 mo out of the year.

Just switched to Pulse Power, no usage charges.

Decided to renew with Amigo for 60 mos. Contract starts in August when the current Amigo contract expires. $175 cancellation fee but only if I switch to another provider. If rates fall I can switch to another Amigo plan at no charge. Gonna miss my current sub 10 cent rate. 14.7 coming soon! What a beating.

With NatGas down and the expected US oversupply due to Freeport being down for a while, anyone think prices will improve on plans in the coming days/weeks? My 3 year 8c all in plan on expires in August.

March. I can't believe what has happened over the past 3 months. The $10/month for EO was so I didn't have to scroll through countless plans, read fine print, etc. I've saved a ton of money using them, but EO offering 21 cents as their proposed plan is ridiculous.

That sounds like a really good deal considering what others are seeing. I wonder if that was for existing accounts only.

I just cannot wrap my head around locking in at this rate for 5 years.
Oil and gas wells deplete (production declines) 20-30% each year unless new wells are drilled or the existing wells are reworked.

No/low active drilling means supply of gas is falling, therefor it is not a stretch to believe rates can keep going up.

5 years might not be advisable as the drilling problem can be solved by kicking the communist scum out of Washington. Just kicking them out will see futures prices fall and rates come down some. A good fall won't happen until actual production comes online 2 more years down the road.

I might also add that future electric demand is still increasing due to all the people moving from states run by commies, so we may not see substantial relief even then.

Of course maybe pres poopy pants' plan works out and we are able to get wonderful cheap electricity from windmills, butterflies and unicorn farts

Buckle up buttercup.

Ditch EO. I'm fairly certain they bias toward 12mo contracts. There are cheaper plans out there but you have to get beyond 12 mo. They believe they need/have to be changing your plan every 12 months to justify the fee you're paying them.

I'm shocked at where rates are now. I randomly lucked into being renewed by Energy Ogre in March for 12 months at $0.067/kWh for energy or right at 11 cents/kWh all-in based on last bill.

Already puckering up for next contract in March 2023.
