I have ~$40k in cash that I am wanting to add to my investment portfolio. I know this thread day trades so my question of what vanguard fund to split it out into is kind of pointless, I am just wanting to know if now is a good time to be putting that money in the market?

I am 26 so I can handle a correction, but didn't know if I should wait for the market to drop more.

This thread is like the strip joint on the corner that most people should avoid.

No one on this thread has any idea whether markets will be up or down next month or year. You should invest money based on time horizon and capacity for risk. If you have 40k cash that is retirement savings, just invest it all and be done with it. If its a shorter timeframe, then dial back the %stocks until you're comfortable with the risk profile.

You remember the investors that lost 50% of their portfolio in 2008 but said they didn't lose anything if they didn't sell?

I do. My trades are on a much shorter horizon usually and very technical. I did buy Sketchers though after they missed big time on earnings for a longer play.

Context:

Investor - Placing ones capital into instruments for a defined period of time, seeking an overall continued accumulation of balance based on the combination of planned contributions, market growth, dividend reinvestment and portfolio diversification. Generally these are 401, IRA, SEP, Roth's, etc. Most are tax-deferred shelters.

Trader - Placing ones capital using a risk/reward combination of strategies over a short or extended horizon.
Sub categories include but are not limited to
1) Day traders - Using large volume of capital exposed to markets over seconds, minutes or within a day for taking advantage of sophisticated technology, technical analysis, education and experience.
2) Short term trader - These are generally trend specialists who use all of the above and add options strategies to limit risk on exposed capital on trades they enter.
3) Swing trader (My personal approach to non-restricted or 3 day trade rule restricted trades) IRA, SEP and trading account application of macro trend analysis, primarily surrounding identified major support/resistance markers. Strategies include buying/selling at major support/resistance technicals, 200 day moving averages, selling covered calls at strong resistance levels, especially during sideways market conditions (which ironically Mr. Wrighty wrongly says is impossible to spot), Futures (primarily overnight), all forms of options strategies - Can you say "Iron Condor"?
4) Numerous other trading strategies (See Aggiemetal as Exhibit A)

Most importantly VOLUME signatures because when big money is making waves they can't hide their moves!

So, in context, how about we not mess up an otherwise enjoyable discussion? I use a combination of all of the above. That said - my trading returns crush any buy and hold strategy.

So why not trade using 100% of everything? Because that isn't how I established my disciplines and strategy. Factors such as owning companies that crunch out cash for investing requires my time. I find that equally enjoyable. Maybe others should as well.

Happy investing or trading!

For you guys who trade in a taxable brokerage account, how do you handle tax withholding?

Specifically, let's say I want to trade sporadically dependent on set buy/sell points or other triggers. So from month to month or quarter to quarter, I might make net 0 or profit/loss a few grand as a "side job". It seems like a nightmare for estimating taxes assuming I'm already claiming 0 on my day job withholding.

I've done a ton of research and am still scratching my head a little since it seems like I'm supposed to be able to magically predict how much extra I will make over the course of the year and equalize that into quarterly payments. 22% bracket and maybe up to $20k profit annually... and yes, I understand the rule about same or greater paid in as previus year, etc.

Not looking for "consult your tax guy" responses either. Just curious about how other casual traders/investors handle similar situations.

Curious to why worry about withholding taxes through the year. Use that money to invest throughout the year and sell the stock to pay for the taxes when Uncle Sam sends you the bill come April of next year.

I also know some people sell their losses and buy similar company shares come December to decrease their tax burden.

I've been hold $WRD for a long time now and I am curious about this run up it has going on. It's dipped a bit but not much and I just don't see the reasoning behind the positive buying volume? I guess this is just due to the run up before earnings? Am I missing something?

Possibly. I misquoted and understated the success actually.

"[The] iPhone X was the most popular iPhone each and every week of the quarter," Cook told Cramer and Lipton. "It was also the most popular iPhone every week since its launch. So, the iPhone X has been a huge success and it's the first time, since we split the lineup back at iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, that the top model has been the top-selling model. That's unprecedented in that history."

I really don't feel comfortable doing this because I know nothing about the fundamentals of the company. They could shoot up of down based on a number of things including earnings, products, management changes, etc which make "technical analysis" pretty worthless. Maybe it's starting to form a little head and shoulder pattern though on the smaller time period, but it's too early and that wouldn't be confirmed yet either since "the head" is still being formed if that's what's happening. If the right shoulder forms and you start getting lower highs then MAYBE the trend is reversing. The flip side is it's been on a pretty solid rise and keeps making higher highs. No trend reversal at all and no reason to panic.

Haven't watched it. Earnings after the bell. You follow it and see a move on earnings? That $100 mark always interesting to factor into a bounce.

Quick look at OLED and its about as clear of a now or never support level as you can get. The gap up that started the big move upward terminates without fanfare and then the slide back down to pre gap up support. Volumes have signaled sells only througout the down trend.

Sold them 3 days ago. Sorry, I will try to post sells on things posting I entered. And yes - if you are still in those I'd exit. Incredible run and gain. That $100 magnet worked like a charm. Everyone remember that psychology!

In that vein I already covered 50% of my DKS short sell on the rapid drop and filled at $31.71-$31.73 for a quick 80 cent gain which I will now use a portion of those gains to enter Puts out to June 15 $30 strike only if it gives me a bounce back just above $32
