What about reduced consumption by farmers? I just watched a vox video about farmers using 80%+ of the water and the majority of that goes to growing alfalfa for cows that are exported to china, japan, etc. it seems we could put them on that plant based diet and keep the cheeseburgers for ourselves and free up some water at the same time.

A majority of our beef and alfalfa does not go to China and Japan. We export about 15% of our beef and about 10% of our roughage and grain for beef and dairy in other countries. And as far as cheeseburgers go, we actually import a significant amount of the beef that goes into your burger.

I guess you really can't believe everything you read on the internet…
I watched the video you referenced I think it's just tough to follow the way they present all their percentages.

Moving out there in Feb, need to also buy a vehicle. I'm not too certain if there's an advantage to buying in tx or co. Thoughts?

If you are looking for AWD you'll find more inventory up here. Not sure about registration and taxes. CO vehicle registration and renewal fees are much different than TX

Wouldn't he have to register here when he moves either way?

Tax rate can obviously swing. As low as 2.9% up to 9.25% in CO. $60k vehicle, that adds up (though a trade in reduces that price)

I know several people here in Colorado that have flown to Texas, bought an SUV there, and driven it back to Colorado. They all said it saved a couple/few thousand dollars. I'll say it's been about 3 years since I've heard of anyone doing this, so it might be different now.

Again, for someone moving here (doesn't apply to an existing CO resident) this is entirely dependent on tax rate here and in TX. Arapahoe county for example is 3.25% total if you're in certain unincorporated areas. Texas is flat 6.25%, no? So you might save if you bought it here (all depends on registration which is tied to age of vehicle) but if you are in a town, your tax rate is probably 7.5-9%, so it's going to be cheaper in TX, depending on price.

So depending on where you move, maybe it's cheaper, maybe it's not.

If you live in CO already, it doesn't matter where you buy; you have to register it to your address, upon which you'll pay registration and taxes based on your address, not where you purchased it. Unless you find a smoking deal in TX that still saves you after flights and fuel to drive, you aren't saving anything.

Now you can REGISTER a vehicle to an address/po box in another state (lots of this going on in the RV world), and this def. can save you.

But I don't think COSC is talking about this.

My post was only regarding sales price. I'll let COSC (or anyone contemplating a vehicle purchase) run the numbers to see if it makes sense.

I would consider every one of the aforementioned people I know, that has purchased a vehicle in Texas, to be financially smart.

If SUVs are still 2-4k less in Texas (again, this is speculative as I've never done this… relying on others that have), the relative costs for gas and flight are minimal. Amarillo is $100 on SWA; Dallas is $20 on Frontier… just looked mid week in January. Gas would be $75-150 from Amarillo/DFW assuming 17 mpg.

I don't think I'd ever do anything like this, unless I was already going to be in Texas visiting and the discount was 3-4k or more. I don't care enough to look up tax differences either, but that would be the biggest part of the equation along with sales price/discount. I hope/think everyone knows that you have to register and pay based on where you live.

Yeh, I guess to simplify for COSC;
There are a few variables at play if you are planning on moving here and deciding between purchasing in TX before you move or here in CO after you move.

Sales price
Sales tax rate (6.25% in TX vs ??? in your potential home in CO)
Registration fee (on a new car, much higher in CO (like $1000), on a 4-5 year old car, maybe a few hundred $; TX is flat, around $75 I think?)

For someone already living here, it's a bit simpler, since you are paying tax and registration fee based on your home here, it all comes down to (sales price) minus (flight + fuel back + loss of trade in tax credit)

If you're trading in a ~$25k car, at 8%, that's $2000 you are pay extra in sales tax by not trading in, so it can be significant. The TX price would have to be really good.

Is any 4x4 vehicle a good option up there or does it need to be a full time 4x4 or awd? I was going to go with a 4runner and didn't think anything of it since there are so many up there, but I just noticed it is a rwd vehicle. I can throw it into 4x4 any time there's snow, but I don't think it's supposed to go over 55mph or so, and you guys def go more than 55mph in the snow on I25, lol.

I'm more of a wood and nails guy, not so much mechanically inclined, so any pointers would be great.

If there is snow on I25 you probably aren't going much faster than 55.

I've been on I25 with snow actually accumulated only maybe 2-3 times in 10 years. It doesn't often accumulate; the crews are clearing that first and foremost.

No trucks are full time 4x4; and there are a lot of trucks around here. Anything with 4x4 or awd is fine. You aren't throwing on 4x4 so you can continue to go 70 mph on a highway. You are turning it on so you can move forward when the light turns green, or make a corner without fishtailing, etc.

You're over thinking it; I have to turn on my 4x4 (F150) only a handful of times a year.

Question for you folks that have been here longer than me. This is our fourth winter and had a first on Friday. Was driving into Keystone around 8am and it was a few degrees below 0. Tried to use my windshield washer fluid but it was apparently frozen. I know that the container I use says it's rated to -20, but apparently that's not good enough?

Did you have an oil change recently? Sometimes those places get cheap and top you off with some watered down fluid.

Ha, I bet that's exactly what happened. I was thinking that yesterday, but figured no way a shop in Colorado would do that, but guess I was giving them too much credit.

the outlets/squirters can freeze over. Warm interior, snow falls on windshield/cowl, then the squirters basically have a chunk of ice on them. Might not necessarily be frozen wiper fluid.

I don't know that just cold makes a drive anymore difficult than normal.
Wait until you drive to or from TX in a white out or a massive rain/hail storm!
I've had the unfortunate pleasure to have done that more times than I care to admit.

I think it just confines us to the car a bit more than I'd like. We'll be fine with layers on quick stops, but do enjoy letting the girls expend energy on playgrounds when possible. Outdoor lunch probably won't be too much fun in the panhandle this time through

Agreed. A nice picnic lunch does wonders for the morale of a drive... especially with kids, but I enjoy it too. Even if it's short.

If the weather isn't terrible, I recommend stoping at Cadillac Ranch just west of Amarillo. It's not a great picnic spot as it's really just out in a field, doesn't have bathrooms. But we did it on the way home from Thanksgiving and the kids enjoyed it. Super simple... just get out and walk around these spray painted cars for a little bit. You can buy spray paint to add to it if you like... we just shared with some people leaving.

Good luck on the drive!

Great news for golfers! New 36 hole facility from the Keiser family who founded Bandon and Sand Valley. Routings by Coore and Crenshaw. Should be less than 40 minutes from my door up here in Greeley.

Have to say it was quite strange driving directly into the front this afternoon. Left my corporate office in Littleton at 470 and Kipling - sunny and 44. A few miles up 470 the temperature already dropped 21 degrees and was dusty from all the wind. A few minutes later it's snowing and -1.

I did my last delivery at work in Golden around 4:15. It was maybe 40 degrees then. Got back to the shop in Aurora at 5:30 and it was 8 degrees, snowing, and windy.

can anyone recommend an attorney in the Denver area (Littleton even better) for setting up a simple will for my wife and I? We don't have anything too complicated but going through something like legal zoom wasn't inspiring much confidence.

I think they get a little more extreme weather. Not sure it's too popular for young families, but still have heard good things.

Have a lot of colleagues that have moved down there over the last several years. The key is being able to work remote...but I guess the I-25 expansion has helped either way. Nice location IMO

Monument is nice but has a few drawbacks...

It has great schools and hockey. Most of the houses have a little space. Close to chain restaurants located on briargate.

Negs. It gets MUCH worse weather than Denver or most of Springs. We live on the SW side of Springs by the broadmoor and get about 50 inches of snow a year. Monument gets about 120. It is also much colder up there, even though it is only 500 feet higher in elevation. In the summer Monument and Fountain get most of the hailstorms as well.

Only other neg is that you pretty much have to drive to anything cool. They have a few trails but not like either Denver or Springs. You have to go through Denver to get to the ski resorts or go through Woodland Park. Just seems like there really isn't anything there in Monument itself.

Overall I would rather live there than in Denver but would rather live in Golden or Morrison, especially if not commuting often.

We looked at Genessee when we moved to town. Realtor said winter was two months longer there than in town (a month on either end). I imagine Monument is similar.
