So I just saw on SportsTalk 790's instagram post that they had a caller from South Fla say that the reason things are so quiet on the managerial front is that the Astros are waiting for the Yankees season to finish so they can make Brad Ausmus the GM.

He actually wasn't that bad. Well he was at first but he got better. I'm not mad at us getting Allen.

But you could have gotten him while also having Dubon. Or traded for Allen this offseason after you let Dubon walk in free agency

I was never against the Dubon trade with the plan of spending his money on bullpen or LH OF bat, but we never did that. So the trade was a huge failure. I honestly don't know what the point of the trade was if there wasn't already a move to coincide it in place.

What would waiting on anyone have anything to do with making an announcement about Espada?

Someone's been reading texags. I really hope that's a troll. Ausmus would be horrible. Like Buster Posey, but dumber.

Mason Miller on the patiently list tonight with the padres season on the line. Baseball players need to stop getting it on in January.

Playoffs are showing me one thing. Teams need to be bunting more during the regular season because they need the playoffs to not be the first time they are doing it all season

With his reliance on spinny stuff and soft contact, I wonder if MLB cracking down on pitchers using sticky stuff was part of his decline. The crackdown started in 2021 which was when he started to struggle.

Yeah, who wouldn't want a guy that could play every defensive position well and hit 0.270+ this year? That guy sucks.

Well
He didn't hit as good as Nick Allen this year

They are essentially identical except Dubon was a full time player with over 4x the ABs. And a significantly better fielder.

And can play OF. Which is where we were weakest.

Allen ended up having decent numbers but going into August he was OPS of .591

1 and a 1/2 decent months does not erase three months of horrendous

What I don't understand is why not have both? We clearly had depth issues in the outfield. And they both combined to make $8 million

There is no doubt in my mind that Dana was dumping salary before the season. Was he told to do that or was that part of a plan to get below the tax limit to restore draft picks? I suspect mostly he was told to, given the lack of add ons later in the year and lack of PT for Imai.

The moves this org has made don't make sense to all of us because they're not baseball moves. They're business decisions.

Trading Dubon
Signing Imai
Adding every DFA'd player possible and not going to get a proven veteran OFer

All business moves and not baseball moves. It's why they suck at baseball.

Exactly…it's why I do feel bad for Dana. His specialty isn't putting a budget friendly team together. If we wanted a guy like that, we should have hired someone with that background….like a James Click type. Oh wait, Crane fired that guy.

Crane is a huge problem and until he either changes or sells the team, we are in for a long run of ineptitude.

BINGO!!!! 1000% correct.

Except we needed starting pitching in a bad way and signed the best on paper while staying under the luxury tax.

Dubon's offense improved once removed from Alex Cintron's influence. Go figure...

Dubon was a league-average hitter this year. He was a mildly below-average hitter for most of his career. Let's not romanticize his production. In a smaller role, Allen was about the same, slightly above Dubon in wRC+.

Cease was the move. We just never made it anytime he was available (at the deadline multiple times or free agency)

ASTROS ALL-TIME TEAM DRAFT (coming soon)

Once the World Series ends, I want to try the 8 to 12 poster all-time Astros draft which has its own website and a colossal database of everybody who has ever played for the team.

So I need 7 to 11 people who want to try their hand at picking the best possible Astro team possible. It's totally free, and you'll send me an email address - more on that later - so you can register for the site. You can choose to be texted or emailed each time it's your turn to pick.
There are no time limits for each pick, but obviously I need people who are actually going to commit to it and not leave the rest of us in limbo while you forget all about it. My idea is to post the picks here as they happen and then let the rabble rousers vote on who had the best team and maybe dial Julia Morales on Cameo up for the winner.

I'm open to what the rosters look like - surely not a 25-man roster, but probably something like each position player (including a DH, who can be any hitter) - 2-3 starters and 2-3 relievers. Myself and 4 friends did an 8-round 1980s movie draft last spring and we had a blast, and mostly lamented that we should have made it a lot more round.

So just keep it in mind if you're interested. Feel free to send me a DM if you know you're in or if you don't have stars you can email me at charleykerfeld @ proton.me and check in.

This. The failure was not in trading Dubon in a clear salary dump. The failure was the inability to use the room created to sign an actual major league capable OF to help the roster. Good plan, poor execution.

Neither does a career season, that no one predicted, erase 4 prior below average ones

What I'm saying is that was never the plan. That's what we thought the plan was because we're looking at it from a baseball POV.

The plan was dump salary and replace him with someone cheaper.

From a business POV it was executed perfectly.

I'd be interested, but only if you've untwisted your Star Wars panties over my FULLY DISCLOSED use of Claude for the playoff Bingo. And by the way, the 50/50 venture is looking pretty competitive so far (lol).
