Good to see Anderson and Sporz combine for 4.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief.

Was more tongue in cheek. I don't think they trade him with how well they're playing, especially to a division rival.

We were spoiled.

20% of our Season Losses were in the last 7 games.

I would really like a W tomorrow.

Most importantly is to help nudge LAAA to realize they are not a playoff team in 2023.

Win tonight was huge.

If we lost tonight, the angels and Ohtani would smell blood in the water. Ohtani would've been extra motivated to throw a gem and get the sweep.

The home plate umpire has been bad and a hindrance all series long. Just was piling on to our cold spell.

Ohtani has not been very good lately, especially on the road. For the season (on the road) he's averaged just a hair over 5.1 IP, with a 4+ era. In June he has a 5.7 era. Hopefully the trend continues and the bats light him up.

Will be glad when Angels leave town. Ohtani has hit 3 home runs and been a big pain in the ass all series long.

Thank God that Trout hasn't been his normal self against us…

I think I saw tonight's game will be on both Bally and FS1. Thought I'd let the folks who don't have Bally know so they could watch hopefully.

On a prospect-related note, I'm officially off the Cole Winn wagon. I looked up his professional stats this morning, because he got shelled again last night, and what I found was less than encouraging IMO.

He had one really stellar year, '21, where he had a 2.41 ERA split between AA-AAA. The only season he pitched prior to '21, his ERA in A ball was 4.46. Since '21, his ERA has shot up to awful - in '22 it was 6.51 and this season it's even worse at 8.74. His control, which was pretty good in '21 (3.2 BB per 9IP) has been bad in every other season, including his first - 5.1, 6.4, and 9.1 BB per 9IP in '19, 22, & 23 respectively. He's never thrown all that hard, so you have a guy who needs to hit his spots not being able to do so.

He's on the 40 and IMO he needs to be one of the first to go in a trade, not that he'll bring much of anything. Maybe a change of scenery or different coaches/voices will get him turned around, but he clearly isn't figuring it out in the Rangers' minor league system.

Feel like for the past 12 years you could sub any former top pitching prospect of ours name in that article and it would be pretty accurate

Unfortunately, I agree with both rbtexan and bmac. It seems like this is an every other year occurrence for the Rangers, but I'll be honest, I'm not sure anyone knew he would fall off this much. He's pitching so poorly I think we could take him off the 40-man and not a single team in the MLB would care. It's really unfortunate for the Rangers because it continues the long history of whiffing on pitching prospects, but it's even more unfortunate for Winn. I don't wish going through what he's going through, on anyone.

I think if it is available on Bally, it will be blacked out on FS1 for us local folks.

I get where you're coming from though Perez wasn't a stud til he came back years after he left and Holland's success was pretty short lived. None of our home grown pitchers are really making it to their contract year and getting a highly competitive extension

Shohei vs Elovaldi. Might pull up to that game solo. Will be my first game of the season. Sad considering I live in Dallas now.

We've covered pitcher development quite a bit, but there always seems to be more to discuss.

With Rule V it is really hard to draft and develop front line pitchers within 1 organization, especially if you are prone to trading.

I found this:
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2894865-mlb-draft-2020-do-more-future-stars-come-from-high-school-or-college

Interesting stats. It looks at MLB and where they are sourced - College/HS/Int'l and indicates a heavy lean on College. The other side of that is, where are P drafted. More from HS?!

I believe through MoneyBall, the statistics were that drafting college pitchers had less risk and thus a greater chance to make the Bigs. Where as, HS pitchers tended to have a higher ceiling, but more risk to actually make it.

20-30 years ago, the Rangers would draft more hitters at the top because they had a higher probability of making the club, where as pitchers seemed more random.

JD went HS pitcher heavy a number of times taking more risk with a higher ceiling. As a result... as mentioned, 2 of the 3 HS SPs (Owen White and Englert) in the 2018 draft had TJ surgery within the 1st year, or so. Cole Winn was the one that did not have TJ surgery.

So, you sign White and Englert and you get 5 years to develop them based on Rule V for players drafted 18 or younger. You get 4 years if 19. So, if you hold your kid back in 7th grade and he graduates at 19, he'll be drafted higher and the team only gets 4 years to develop you. I digress.

So, if you have 5 years to develop... and in 2019 the player gets TJ surgery, then you have now lost 3 years. surgery in 2019, won't pitch until 2020, 2021 you finally get to develop. Good luck developing the 23 year old into a MLB pitcher... without exposing him to Rule V or trade.

For Cole Winn, it is a similar but different story. In 2022, he took a ball off his left ankle (RHP) so it was his landing foot. Screwed up his mechanics and I think he is still having to figure things out.

HS, you are drafting an 18 year old and retain him until he is 23.
College, you are drafting a 21 year old and retain him until he is 25.

Interesting read for sure. You forget how big a wrench the all but guaranteed TJ Surgery throws in the process
