Can we appreciate Jake Meyers a little bit more? Not many MLB players have a 6 RBI game in their career…absolutely needed that today from an unexpected contributor
After today's game he's probably about a league average player with elite CF defense. He's second to Julio in OAA in way fewer attempts. He might end up a 2.5-3 WAR player being a part time OFer.
Astros might be able to use him in a trade for a reliever in the offseason.
Or keep him as the 4th OFer and defensive replacement.
Who are the top 3? Cuz Yordan should DH most of the time.
No he shouldn't
Is he a better defender than Chas in LF when Meyers plays CF?
But it's not that simple. Yordan is probably the 4th best defensive OF. But we don't just okay defensive specialists at every position.
I get it on a day like today when Tucker isn't playing OF. Which is why I said "most of the time." Everyone likes to point out the splits when Yordan plays in the field, but it's not like he becomes a less dangerous hitter when he plays DH. So why wouldn't you want the 3 best defenders in the OF most of the time?
Because the splits are that much different. He's a really good hitter as DH. He's as bonafide MVP when playing LF.
If he were to carry his 2023 LF production only for his entire career, he'd be the best player that ever lived.
If he carried just his 2023 DH production for his entire career. He'd still be 1st ballot Hall of Fame. His OPS (.960) ranks 6th in all of baseball this year, and his wRC+ (162) ranks 4th. Obviously, it's my opinion and I know many disagree, but that's elite and good enough, while putting a better defender on the field.
