Is he Bregman or Altuve's replacement.
I'd prefer Bregman if those are the two options, though candidly I can't imagine Jose sticking at 2B for the life of his next contract. Still think he ends his career in LF.

Can he learn to catch? The reverse biggio?

Diaz is our catcher for the next 5+ years.

Scouts don't care about TJ. It's almost expected these days and you can actually come back stronger and throwing harder when you recover.

Why is Bregman awful vs LHP this year?

Career vs LHP
.288 avg, .890 OPS, 143 wRC+, .298 babip, 34.6% hard hit

2023 vs LHP (90 ABs)
.178 avg, .566 OPS, 61 wRC+, .173 babip, 28.9% hard hit
Little late night nerding...This goes to the point W has made a bit this year. Bregman has not been able to pull the ball in the air vs LHP.

And the pitches of those balls in play were thrown where…? Bregman is not a dead pull hitter, when pitchers pitch him outside he takes it back up the middle and the other way. That spray chart ties right into the fact that has been discussed previously that pitchers this year aren't throwing inside to him as much. I'd bet lefties even less, they stay arm side and pitch him away

Edit to add the propensity of the ground balls being pulled would probably even enforce this further. I'd bet those are balls thrown outside which he still tried to pull and instead rolled over weakly

I don't know the pitch location for every batted ball on that chart, but here is the pitch map (catcher's view) from Alex vs LHP. Yes, there is more away than inside, but there is a good chunk in the middle. Whatever the case is, maybe unlucky, he is not having success against these pitchers.

Just to keep up the talk (and avoid going to sleep)

Here is Alex's spray chart vs LHP last year. Not too dissimilar I suppose.

And here are the percent break downs of pitch locations last year and this year
22 on the left (or maybe top on mobile), 23 on the right (again only vs LHP)

We got ourselves a big unit replacement, if only he had a little more heat

Bregman has a problem with dipping his back shoulder. His swing looks jumpy and uncomfortable. It's clear his mechanical flaw has him thinking too much. What's concerning is that he hasn't improved a lick from the beginning of the season. Thankfully, he's elite at defense and taking walks. But we need him to stop being elite at double plays and failing to advance runners.

Wouldn't mind seeing him dropped to 6th or 7th if/when we add another bat to insert into the 2-5 hole.

ETA: at least until he figures something out (if that ever happens).

A bullpen arm with multiple years of team control has become a high priority over the last few weeks. Should be a surprise to nobody.

Don't mind adding a nice bullpen arm, but I'm hoping SP and bat are foremost on the docket.

Verdugo, Bellinger, Candelario, Soler

Giolito, Stroman

I think your draft stock takes a hit if you haven't had TJ at this point.

The back issues would be my major worry

Houston sports and back injuries...name a more iconic duo

Both picks last night were interesting to me. Dana Brown is considered a draft wizard by most in the industry so I trust him.

oh my, that is a ton of flyballs to centerfield

my eyes have not deceived me over the past 3 months

opposing pitchers know to stay away / outside

AB cannot take them over the fence to center or right

perhaps lost over the weekend...

the Orioles (54-35) caught the Rays (58-35) in the loss column

Rays started 29-7, but have gone 29-28 since

Will be the first year in a while Astros will not hit the preseason over in wins (not counting Covid)
Unless we go 48-23 in the second half to get to 98!!

also a bit concerning for the second half...

the Astros have only played 10 games vs. the AL East so far.

the Red Sox (48-43) are the last place team in the East

the remaining 23 games vs. the East will be tough

This isn't news, but the offense obviously needs Altuve, Yordan or both back. Being down two significantly great hitters really, really hurts this lineup cand causes the Astros to have to play multiple guys who are free swingers. Altuve has always been a free swinger, but at least he has an idea of what he can hit and knows how to punish a pitcher. I never feel like an AB is over when Altuve gets to 2 strikes like I do when Julks or even Diaz get to two strikes.

Those guys have to play the 2nd half healthy for the Astros to make some noise.

The Astros benefited from not having too many injuries last year, which just goes to show why it's so hard to consistently win in baseball year after year.

The season is far from over, but 2nd half health is going to be key. Hopefully the injuries for Altuve and Yordan are done.

Re Tredwell, looking out a couple of years, would robo umps enhance the value of a pitcher with premium control?

Would the Tigers accept Julks (or Meyers) + a minor league pitcher for Eduardo Rodriguez?

I think it would cost a bit more since we'll be bidding against other teams.

Cleveland is interested in outfielders with team control. I can see us offering one of our guys and maybe a couple prospects for Bieber or Civale.

Isn't he still on the injured list with a finger problem? Seems pretty risky to pick him up with all his options if he isn't the same as he was before.

He's back. Got rocked in his first outing but I'm sure he's shaking the rust off.
