Quick JP France appreciation post. Big time unsung hero of the first half.

After losing LMJ, Urquidy, Garcia and Whitley to injury and Blanco wasn't quite ready to be stretched out, things could have gone downhill quickly.

France hasn't been exceptional and I'm not sure what his upside is going forward, but he's been a rock-solid innings eater. He's now gotten through 6 innings in each of his last 6 starts. Saved us alot of bullpen bullets.

I feel like he's learning and getting better each start too. Really like his demeanor and competitive level.

Yeah, I was thinking about this last night. I just keep waiting for regression but he seems to be getting better and better. He's going to take his lumps at some point like any rookie but he's been so damn impressive.

He's fearless and goes right at these guys. You gotta respect that. He's been incredibly valuable for us so far and I hope he can keep it up.

Yep, I don't know if he can keep this up all year, but he's buying us time til Urquidy gets back and we can potentially make an acquisition. Huge.

Not to be a tease… but I had a very interesting name mentioned to me tonight that the Astros have inquired on. I want to get more clarification before throwing a name out there but I was a little surprised considering how much I think he would cost. It's a bat and he has multiple years of club control.
first name luis?

I actually saw his name mentioned on Twitter so I guess it's already being speculated. I'll just go ahead and say yeah Luis Robert is the name. I'm trying to find out if it was just an inquiry or if there's been multiple conversations.

Altuve came back May 19th. Even with Yordan out since June 8th, the offense is back to where it needs to be. Now, obviously, it's not all due to Tuve. Breggy, Diaz, & Tucker have gotten hot. Chas, Julks, Dubon, Meyers, & Abreu have been solid. The little man seems to stir the drink. He's the spark plug. He's the heart.

I think someone, maybe Farmer, threw out an example of what it would take to get him. It would mean a package that would most likely include Gilbert (plus 2,3 or 4 more prospects). Worth it? Maybe because Robert is under control through 2027.

If Abreu stays like this it might be the biggest acquisition we could hope for

Robert is one of the few guys I'd be willing to give up Gilbert for. He instantly makes us a much better team and controlled through 2027.

1) Altuve 2B
2) Bregman 3B
3) Yordan DH
4) Robert CF
5) Tucker RF
6) Abreu 1B
7) Diaz C
8) Pena SS
9) Whoever isn't traded between Chas/Jake in LF (or Brantley)

Yes please.

That was for Cease & Gravemen too in whatever hypothetical we were talking.

Think whatever you would want to get Tucker then add to it for Robert since he's got 4.5 years of control (2 team options for 20 M ea at the end of his deal)

Yep. Yordan might be our best player, but the offense goes as Altuve goes. When he's getting on base and setting the tone, we're a much different team.

He has a 3.13 ERA, that's better than solid in my book

Yes, now I remember Cease and Graveman were in that package. Adding those two plus Robert would be absolutely huge. It would strip our farm but man would it ever open the window wide for the next 2-3 years. Robert would be a HUGE impact bat.

Astros open to trading outfielder
The potential lack of sellers in the trade market is prompting executives to explore alternative solutions. Astros general manager Dana Brown, for example, is looking into exchanges of major-league players that would help both his club and a fellow contender fill respective needs.

The Astros, under previous GM James Click, made such a deal at the 2021 deadline, sending outfielder Myles Straw to Cleveland for reliever Phil Maton and catcher Yainer Diaz, who was then a minor leaguer. Brown is open about again trading an outfielder. The Astros have three who bat right-handed, Chas McCormick, Jake Meyers and Corey Julks.

"We're exploring trading major-league player for major-league player with teams that are contending that make sense," Brown said. "We have a lot of outfielders right now. If we could move an outfield piece for something that could fill another need, we probably would be interested in doing that. Player for player? Yeah. We have to get creative to open up the market. We're definitely exploring that."

The Yankees had previous interest in McCormick, according to major-league sources who were granted anonymity so they could speak candidly. McCormick's opposite-field power would appear ideal for the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. The teams, however, never got close on a deal.

Brown, comfortable with the performances of his young starting pitchers, identified "a bat" as the Astros' biggest need. Michael Brantley, recovering from right shoulder surgery, is expected back around the All-Star break. The same goes for Yordan Alvarez, who is dealing with a right oblique strain.

The Astros, five games back in the AL West but only a half-game out in the wild-card race, begin what could prove a telling four-game series against the Rangers in Arlington on Friday night. Brown, who was the Braves' scouting director before joining the Astros in January, dismissed any notion of bolstering his thin farm system by trading off veteran parts.

"I can't see any scenario where we sell," Brown said. "The thing I keep remembering is last year in Atlanta, we were 10 back and we ran the Mets down. I have no interest in selling, zero.

My takeaways
  • backs up what 2015 told us about Jake/Chas being traded
  • I would die a little inside if we get the Yankees Chazzyfizz
  • Bat is the bigger target, not arm
  • 5 games back June 30th ain't *****

Oh I am not challenging the thought that the front office is not counting on anything from Brantley at all. As I said he may not ever come back, but I personally do not think it will have anything to do with the amount of time it has been since he has seen big league pitching. It will be entirely due to his ability to recover from the injury adequately to return to his former form.

Brantley is the consummate pro, it's his mental approach to hitting and that is not going to change. He is very disciplined, he stays in great shape. So, IMHO, Brantley's return is entirely related to the injury and zero to do with working out the rust.

If it was someone other than MB, I would maybe agree with you on the time off, rust aspect, but not Brantley. He's the exception in that regard. Time will catch up but not yet. It's all about whether the injury changes his swing or slows it or if keeps flaring up. And that is the issue that cannot be counted on.

His value in the club house, IMHO, is tremendous.
    "only one thing is important!"

Haven't the WhiteSox had issues with effort from Robert (not running out ground balls, slow in the field)? Yea he's great offensively, but we don't want another Carlos Gomez situation.

Yeah, they've had issues with a couple of their young guys- Robert included. He's been benched a couple times if I recall correctly. Maybe a change of scenery and a new clubhouse would help. Or maybe this would bring his value down just a tad. I'm not buying that he's untouchable from what I've heard. They probably made that statement to try to increase his value.

White Sox bench OF Luis Robert for not running out grounder

CHICAGO -- After jogging lightly to first base on a ground ball back to the pitcher, White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr was pulled from the team's 12-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

But I think his explanation is fair.

    Quote:

"What happened was, last [Friday] night, I hustled a lot down the line," Robert said through the team interpreter after the Chicago's 10th consecutive loss. "Today my legs were a little tired. My right hamstring was a little tight. Then I decided just to play conservative today. ... I think my mistake was that I didn't tell anybody. I didn't tell the manager because I knew if I said something to him, he probably wouldn't let me play."

I get that has been an idea for a while (see 2015), but I still don't agree. I would roll with Chas & Jake unless we can reasonably add an upgrade that isn't a short-term rental.
